I've lost fingernails and toenails in accidents and even after the initial pain of losing a nail was gone, the tender tops of my fingers and toes would hurt whenever I accidentally knocked them into something even lightly. Maybe that pain goes away after a while, but it was a good couple months before my big toenail grew back to a point it wasn't unpleasant.

Ultra runners are bizarre masochists, but the pain of a badly regrown toenail is 1000000000000000000000000x worse than the pain of having no toenail, so I guess I understand their choice to remove their nails. I mean, one of my big toenails grew back very, very badly after I lost it in a canoeing accident, and it was gross and excruciating until I had surgery to correct the issue.

One of my sister's friends dropped something on her toe about 5-6 years ago (the friend's toe, not my sister's), it turned black, fell off, etc, like you might expect.  Grew back fine, but the weird thing is every once in a while (maybe 3 times since the incident occurred) it turns black and falls off again for no apparent reason, then grows back just fine like nothing happened.  It's really bizarre.

Ooh is this the thread to share our nail troubles?

I lost 1/4th of my finger nail on my left middle finger, because I pulled on something there, it hurt but I ignored it for a week. Had to get surgery to halt the swelling but had to remove the infected part of the nail. The doctor wrapped it in a thick bandage(?) after and I had to keep it elevated. I looked like an idiot giving the finger to everybody.

Grew back fine though.
