Mister Jack
By now the Helghan population is probably down to a few thousand at best, maybe a couple million if they got really lucky. The ISA probably figured they weren't a threat anymore, what with the native Vektan population being way, way higher. I wouldn't be surprised if this belief led the government to start abusing or oppressing the refugees out of arrogance. I doubt that Helghast woman is just a liar who is making everything up. That would be completely uninteresting and would end up being a waste of a 10 hour campaign.
Thursday Next
I've actually never thought of the Helghast as "baddies" they were always just the other team. One of the things I like about Killzone is that it's one of the more balanced stories out there. Mercenary really drives this point home. Both sides come off as bad as each other in that. The Helghast lived on Vekta and mined Helghan for minerals. The UCN saw the increasing wealth of the Helghast as a threat to stability and invaded Vekta, forcing the the Helghast to live on the inhospitable mining colony. The Helghast sought to retake Vekta which kicks off with the attack on Vekta at the start of KZ1. Really, in KZ1 you play the role of a soldier serving under the oppressive colonists, while the Helghan are a displaced people trying to reclaim their homeland.
TheFlyingGerbil
Thanks, that was really handy - I was trying to get a plot summary yesterday but the wikipedia page was not that clear.
TheMightyEthan
There was a little bit more to the UCN invasion of Vekta. Something about not the Helghast not honoring treaties or something? I can't remember very well, it's been a while.
Thursday Next
Yeah, that was the uber short version and is not overly nuanced. Point being that it was not the usual "Vekta was a peaceful planet, then space-nazis!" plot that we get. The politics is what has won me over to the series actually. TheMightyEthan
Yeah, I just thought your version when to far in making the UCN seem like the pointlessly aggressive bad guys, when really, like any real conflict, there's blame to go around. Granted the UCN did not conduct themselves in victory as well as they might have.

Mr. GOH!
All the marketing media really makes the baddies seem like space Nazis.
deanb
To which I was going to respond with yesterday "it's a bit weird the Helghast come across as Nazis, cos I thought it was a German developer", but they're from the Netherlands. Which didn't fare great under the Nazis.
Faiblesse Des Sens
All the marketing media really makes the baddies seem like space Nazis. Marketing is one thing. The game can always be another. Well, one can hope, anyways.
Thursday Next
All the marketing media really makes the baddies seem like space Nazis. Marketing made Mirror's Edge look like an FPS and Brutal Legend like a hack and slash action game. I wouldn't trust their interpretation of anything. Chronixal
Anyone fancy some multiplayer some time tonight? Looking into possibly getting the season pass to share with someone for some co-op goodness if anyone is interested.
TheMightyEthan
Is the coop stuff out yet?
Chronixal
I was under the impression it was if you bought the season pass, unless I'm getting ahead of myself.
TheMightyEthan
I don't think it is, I think the Season Pass just gives you access to it once it's available. I can't find anything that explicitly confirms it one way or the other though.
Chronixal
Looks like you're right, the pass is for future coop expansions. Ah well. No biggie, standard multiplayer it is then.

That's what I've always loved about the story too. Though the games don't always do a good job of actually telling the story and showing how deep it really goes, having read up on it years ago I appreciated what was happening. It's nice that there aren't really "good guys" in a shooter for once. Anyway, I love Killzone. It's my favourite shooter and is one of the only ones I've put a lot of hours into the multiplayer. Normally I get bored of an online shooter after 20 hours or so, but I can keep coming back to KZ.
