One thing I've noticed and found interesting is that they are more willing on this show to swear and show eye candy than even the Marvel movies are.  Ex: They say "shit" 2-3 times per episode, and the first episode contains Absolute Side Boob on the aforementioned lady.

Four eps in and this show is brutal with the violence. :o

Not a complaint, just very surprising. It's a good cast overall. Charlie Cox makes a good Murdock. My only reservation is that, although I usually like D'Onofrio, his Fisk is a bit... odd. This is sort of his "origin" too though, I'm told, so it develops well, apparently.

Is Cox playing DD close to how he's written in the comics? I've watched the first two episodes and Matt Murdock seems like a cipher; I can't imagine how Foggy became friends with him.

As a New Yorker and a lawyer, I think it's hilarious that two fresh-from-the-bar attorneys could find and finance an office in Hell's Kitchen, which, in reality, is super expensive real estate. I also think it's hilarious that it's somehow remained a rough area in the MCU, when, in reality, it's been an expensive area without any real poor population for a couple decades.

I get that the events of the Avengers led to a lot of damage to Hell's Kitchen, but it doesn't explain how ingrained the local poor community and crime community is; did all the bad guys and poor folks move in immediately after the events of Avengers? It's also odd the Hell's Kitchen would be singled out for destruction when it's on the other side of Manhattan from where the portal opened and most of the action in Avengers occurred; Stark Tower is, apparently, located on the East Side above Grand Central, while Hell's Kitchen in on the West Side.

It's also 100% obvious that they filmed most of the outdoors Hell's Kitchen scenes in Brooklyn or Queens, both of which, in reality, offer neighborhoods far more likely to harbor ethnic criminal syndicates and small law firms established by recent graduates than anywhere south of 110th street in Manhattan.

I also wonder why they didn't run the firm out of Murdock's swanky apartment; that's more typically how new small firms get their start in NYC.

I get it, it's just funny to me. It does not hamper the extent to which I enjoy the show, though. I don't expect the MCU to reflect real locations, though I would enjoy if Marvel would generally take into account how NYC has changed and updated some of its NYC heroes and locations to reflect the modern city. There are huge swaths of the city ripe for storytelling; Brooklyn is the largest borough, and Queens is not far behind, but everything is centered on touristy parts of Manhattan. I especially think it would be nice if the Spider Man re-reboot takes into account Spidey's Queens roots and focuses on him patrolling the outer, dangerous, areas of Brooklyn and Queens that are ignored by the Avengers.

Daredevil would also benefit from taking that direction, since that's what his roots are; when the character premiered, Hell's Kitchen was a rough area in Manhattan that he took under his wing. A modern Daredevil would be more likely to take up crimefighting in the Bronx or the Brooklyn neighborhood of East New York.

Do folks even film in New York these days? I was under the impression it's super expensive so film New York is a blend of vancouver n Chicago (with some CG magic n stock photos in between).

Place with a name like "Hells Kitchen" sure sounds like it's gonna be gritty n crime filled. It's a superhero show after all, not Location, Location, Location.

Dean: A shitload of filming happens in NYC. You can hardly go a day without seeing dressing room trailers and craft services setups. I think that actual filming generally happens early in the morning or late at night.

Daredevil was shot here, though I recall reading they substitute Brooklyn/Queens for Hell's Kitchen, because Hell's Kitchen is full of tourists and midtown finance bros, along with a growing contingent of wealthy gay men (some of whom are also the finance bros). It's known for being full of bars that cater to bros and tourists, and it can get rowdy like any areas filled with drunk folks. So it doesn't look like the sort of industrial/gritty dockland Daredevil pretends it is.

I'm fairly certain all of the Netflix MCU shows will be shot in NYC, too.

NYC is so film-friendly, it often stands in for other, supposedly cheaper, major US cities. For example, the popular legal drama the Good Wife is shot here, though it takes place in Chicago.

That Ant-Man trailer looks good. I hope the movie is up to snuff after all the writer and director changes.

There's also a Captain America reference.

I usually prefer shows shot in Vancouver, like Arrow, Flash, and Fringe, but I'm actually glad this was in NYC. I don't think Vancouver would have worked as a shooting location, they were trying to show how gritty, dark, and dangerous New York is, Vancouver is just plum too pretty.

There are many indirect references in the first two episodes. The in-universe reason for Hell's Kitchen being so affordable is because it was severely damaged by "space aliens pouring from a hole in the sky," a reference to the Avengers movie. A crimelord also makes a statement that he loves when superheroes (though he doesn't use that word) cause a lot of damage because it means his profits go up. There are other references, too. The whole Netflix MCU is built around street-level heroes that deal with human (ish) local threats rather than alien invasions, shadowy Nazi-esque cabals seeking to control the world, or whatever stupid villains feature in the Iron Man movies.

There was a lot of references to Marvel characters we haven't seen, one was clearly an Elektra reference, and I believe there was some stuff for Iron Fist as well. Plus, Stilt Man's legs. I'd like to see a compilation of all the easter eggs, hopefully someone can put something like that together soon.
