I really dont understand the strong dislike for Iron Man 3. Is the mandarin thing really that big a deal? I loved the twist. Mostly because Ben Kingsley sold BOTH characters perfectly. Really menacing when he was on TV, yet when the real him comes out he's hilarious. Not to mention his Marvel short. It was great. I hope we see him again. He's so funny that it was worth the twist happening just so that character could be hilarious.

Id put it above both Thor movies, IM2 and the first Captain America. Oh, and Hulk.

I also havent seen Ultron, but IM3 has probably my favorite Marvel patented movie ending fight. Seeing all those Iron Mans get demolished was great.

Only part I didnt like was the kid being in it. But even that I liked Stark making all those makeshift weapons. I also think Stark's mental problems after Avengers could have needed more time to really delve into it.

I saw that animated Extremis movie and liked it, but even in that I found Extremis a bit confusing. I didnt get it in the movie either.

I understood what it was, but I didnt get all the details about it. What the rules of it were.

And Ive grown up enough to accept that most movies will take ideas from their comic or book source, but not really adapt them. Theyre not exactly what they were in the comics. Im not sure why people continue to get upset about stuff like that. Every movie so far has done it. Even the Watchmen movie made alterations to the source.

I will always side with film when it comes to comics vs film. comics are just so imperfect because sometimes they run too long and have different writers. Film can fix it.

For a long time I didn't know how I felt about the IM3 twist but I eventually came to the conclusion that I hated it.  I think what took me so long to get my feelings in order is the fact that Kingsley was just so good in both personas, but when you get right down to it we were essentially cheated out of Iron Man's arch-nemesis.  Cap got to fight Red Skull.  Thor got to tango with Loki.  Iron Man got...Trevor Slattery.  Actually, no.  What really bothered me wasn't so much that Trevor wasn't Mandarin, but that Killian was.  He was so damn boring that I literally only remember one thing about him now, and it's my most hated line in the movie:

I WAS THE MANDARIN ALL ALONG!

Yeah, just twist the knife, why don't you.  I know that the bluray short implied that there is still a real Mandarin out there, but I have serious doubts that they're actually going to use him in a movie.

Killian was the Mandarin in the sense that he orchestrated the entire thing, he was behind the fake Mandarin. His name was just used by Killian because the real Mandarin has a reputation he could use to his advantage.

The short goes over this. Whether Marvel is going to actually expand on that or it was just a cheap way to please the hardcore fans who hated the twist, I dont know.

Also, I love the Red Skull, but he kind of sucked in Captain America. He just didnt resonate with me. I dunno why.

He did look badass though.

See, I might accept that reasoning if I believed that they'd planned from the beginning to have Killian be a "fake" Mandarin who was using the identity of the "real" one, but I don't.  I think they made that up after the fact to cover their asses when it got such a polarizing reaction.  Even then I could let it go if I thought the real Mandarin would be the villain in a future Marvel movie, but I don't see that happening either.  I mean, where is there even any room for him anymore?  Marvel announced all their films for pretty much the rest of the decade and I don't remember seeing Iron Man 4 on that list.

Yeah, I understand that. I think we can all accept that it was made to get people off their backs who were upset. Whether they decide to do anything with that, who knows.

Most of those shorts havent been taken into account in the MCU either, which is a shame. I was hoping to see Lizzy Caplan as a member of Shield.

I love Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, so I had high hopes for Iron Man 3, but I just couldn't get into it as much as I'd hoped. It's still got the zingy dialogue and inventiveness, but it feels too much like distinct parts pulling against each other (as you'd expect with distinctive directors on blockbusters).

Plus, I think the plot was partly quite stupid and also the same twist they did in IM1 (which, I'm to understand, already took many of its cues from Extremis). It's terrorists behind the whole thing! No wait, it's just a pissed off businessman. It's the same with the Spider-Man films, where it's almost the same villain everytime. Okay, that's an exaggeration... but there's not much new being done. Heroes don't need big character arcs, but I just expected something more.

Age of Ultron spoiler

What I actually liked about this was that this time the main villain actually came from "contemporary" Tony Stark rather than a result of his arms manufacturing past (although, yeah, the Maximoff's again). I think that's an element needed more in all the Marvel films (not that there arent some with closely connected villains).

And I don't care about fidelity to the source material. I didn't need to have an actual Mandarin with magic rings, but neither did I want some hokey, fire-breathing businessman nonsense.

Anyway, it's an entertaining watch, for sure, and I don't dislike it, but it's not something I'm as keen to revisit as much as others.

It feels like AoU erased the events of IM3, at least insofar as Stark's character development goes. I liked the stuff with the Mandarin and Killian, but I agree that the 'rules' of Exrtremis weren't presented clearly at all.

IM2 is legit garbage, though. And Thor 1 is borderline nonsense garbage, too.

I like the Thor movies because I think Natalie Portman and Thor are good together. They have good chemistry on screen.

And Loki of course. I also like hammy Odin.

I will admit that the first Thor is extremely by the book. For better or for worse, it felt like classic literature where it feels extremely predictable.

I also didnt care for IM 2 very much, but what does everyone think is so bad about it? On paper it sounds good. Drunk Iron Man, War Machine is cool, I liked Hammer and Mickey Rourke was legit in it. I thinkt he actors all played their part well. Maybe not Cheadle though. Too bland.

But then you watch it and it's just such a mess. Its so messy that I cant pinpoint what I dont like about it.

The best part of that movie is Hammer and the suitcase Iron Man suit. That was rad. And thats about it.

Ironically, its also the first big Shield movie where Nick Fury was featured above just a cameo. it sets up that whole thing, so it is somewhat important.

...except the Extremis run is pretty self-contained as a comic which is how it only ended up being part of a movie. Also Warren Ellis shits on most writers on this planet but I don't even think the dude got a credit nod. Then again neither did Brubaker for The Winter Soldier.

http://www.comicbookresources.com/article/captain-america-civil-war-starts-production-adds-rudd-and-more-to-cast

ATLANTA, GEORGIA (May 7, 2015) – Marvel Studios has commenced principal photography at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta, Georgia on “Captain America: Civil War,” the third installment of its Super Hero franchise. The production will shoot on location in Atlanta, Georgia, which serves as the base for the film’s production, as well as locations in Germany, Puerto Rico and Iceland.

Set for release in the United States on May 6, 2016, “Captain America: Civil War” is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo (Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Community”) from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely (“Captain America: The Winter Solider,” Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger”). The film returns Chris Evans (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron”) as the iconic Super Hero character Steve Rogers/Captain America along with Robert Downey Jr. (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Marvel’s “Iron Man 3”) as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”) as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Sebastian Stan (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Captain America: The First Avenger”) as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”) as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Paul Bettany (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Iron Man 3”) as The Vision, Jeremy Renner (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Marvel’s “The Avengers”) as Clint Barton/Hawkeye, Don Cheadle (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Iron Man 3”) as Jim Rhodes/War Machine and Elizabeth Olsen (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Godzilla”) as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch.

After his debut in Marvel’s “Ant-Man” on July 17, 2015, Paul Rudd (“Ant-Man,” ”Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues”) will make his first appearance alongside the Avengers as Scott Lang/Ant-Man in “Captain America: Civil War.”

The film also includes outstanding additional cast, including Chadwick Boseman (“42,” “Get on Up”) as T’Challa/Black Panther, Emily VanCamp (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Revenge”) as Sharon Carter/Agent 13, Daniel Brühl (“Inglourious Basterds,” “Bourne Ultimatum”), Frank Grillo (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Warrior”) as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones, William Hurt (“A History of Violence,” Marvel’s “The Incredible Hulk”) as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross and Martin Freeman (“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies”).

“Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

Pretty much Avengers 2.5, with just Thor n Hulk out of the picture (as was the case in original Civil War too, since they're big power players...well apart from the Ragnarok bot I guess).

Seems going with regulation rather than registration (which wouldn't work in MCU since nearly everyone knows who everyone is). Also Thunderbolt Ross is in, which'll be interesting as he's fro Incredible Hulk which is the one that I think most folks forget is part of the MCU. Apart from the end with Stark popping up to meet Thunderbolt Ross it generally doesn't tie in. Wonder if we'll get Rulk if he's in.

Decent list so far mind, got 11 Avengers*, with a couple extra if you include T'Challa n Agent 13. I'm kinda curious with the end of the film if we'll get the "full" avengers in Infinity War too, or if we're just gonna get the "New" Avengers. But that's years down the line so silly speculation.

*for those not up for reading the list which is night unreadable tbh with all the films included in brackets:

  1. Iron Man
  2. Captain America
  3. Black Widow
  4. Hawkeye
  5. Scarlet Witch
  6. Vision
  7. War Machine
  8. Falcon
  9. Bucky
  10. Ant-Man
  11. Spider-Man(not on the list cos no one named yet)

Are we sure Spider-Man's actually going to be in this movie?  The first standalone Spider-Man isn't until 2017.

Also, just noticed that Infinity War parts 1 & 2 are both being handled by the same writer/director team as Winter Soldier, so that's pretty exciting.

You did follow the whole "Sony and Marvel join up for spidey" stuff right? His debut is Civil War.

I followed it enough to know that Spider-Man was going to be in the MCU, but not much else.

Glad to hear his debut is Civil War, that means we won't be subject to another drawn-out origin story.

Yeah, the Russo's did an amazing job on Winter Soldier. Weird to think that these were guys doing Arrested Development and Community beforehand.

Speaking of Community, everyone spots the Abed "cameo" in Winter Soldier, but having listened to the commentary, there's also that debate opponent playing the SHIELD guy who Sharon defends from Rumlow. Plus, he reappears in AoU as the "Number six is topped and stopped, uh, stopped, topped...it's full of people" guy.

To be fair, it's not 100% confirmed that Spidey will be in Civil War, Marvel/Sony just said he'll be in one Marvel movie before the Spider-Man film in 2017, so my money is on Civil War but it could be a post-credits scene in Doctor Strange for all we know.

Also, I wonder if they'll just change the name to Marvel's Civil War or The New Avengers or something else.
