Phase 2 DONE

This was the phase I was most interested in rewatching as some of films I didn't remember as well as phase 1.

Here's my observations / nitpicks.

Iron Man 3: HOLDS UP. I always liked IM3 but I think it's a better movie than it gets credit for. Upset fanboys pissed about what happened with the Mandarin derailed the conversation about his film. But it's a legitimately great twist and the MCU doesn't have too many twists. A couple random thoughts: I still don't get why it's Christmas, this movie had a HEAVY Christmas vibe, it feels like it came out 5 months late. The kid sucks (apparently he's coming back for Infinity War??) but his and Tony's relationship is great. The scene with the people falling out of Air Force One and Iron Man saving them is pretty great and maybe one of the best action sequences in the MCU up to this point. I don't understand why Alrich Killian is evil or what his motivations are but you can say that about a love of MCU villains... especially in this phase.

Thor The Dark World: Fuck everything about this movie. I knew it wasn't good but it's aged horribly especially after Ragnarok. They took all the wrong lessons from Thor 1. Remember I said the worst part of Thor was when it took itself too seriously instead of having fun? Well that's all this movie is. And it fucking sucks for it. A bleak CG fest with a bad villain, waste of the 9th Doctor. At least not all the shots are dutch tilts. Fuck this film.

Captain America The Winter Soldier: HOLDS UP. Great film and you know it.

Guardians of the Galaxy: HOLDS UP. What a one two punch with TWS and GotG.

Avengers Age of Ultron: You know what. HOLDS UP. This film gets a lot of hate but I don't mind it. It's just didn't do much different than the first Avengers so it feels a little weak in comparison. The Avengers are really only a thing for the third act of the first film so it's cool seeing them working together right from the get go of this movie. Plus it has some great Whedonesque moment (the party at Stark Tower is all great). Too bad it gets over shadowed by Civil War. CA:TWS and this film are really when these movies start feeling like they're all part of a universe instead of just 4 stand alone films plus a crossover film every phase.

Ant-Man: According to Wikipedia this is phase 2?? Ok well... HOLDS UP! This is the most stereotypical Marvel film of them all. It has great characters and great action but a weak villain. But it floats on thanks to Paul Rudd and Michael Pena. That opening scene is great too.

So who gonna kick bucket?

My guess is:

Spoiler

Loki - I'd say my easiest guess but I'm happy to be guessing wrong.

Vision -  I think gonna go by virtue of being a powerhouse, an easy loss to excuse cos of the infinity stone and they're obviously trying for some emotional impact with Scarlet Witch.
Drax - I think this'll come in Part 2. He's got quite a big stake with his family being killed due to Thanos (in the comics he's pretty much 'made' to combat Thanos).
Nebula - Also quite a strong stake with Thanos. I think she'll hit him in his weakspot for massive damage, but not the finishing blow.

Captain America (or Steve Rogers as I think he's now officially going as). - Either Iron Man or Cap have to go and I think he'd galvanise everyone much more than Tonys death. He also has two successors.

Hawkeye - probably just on some screen in the background a news story about a farm being crushed by falling spaceship debris or something.

None of the above deaths I feel would be 'permanent'. I'm not sure who I'd put money on for a long term perma-death given even Coulson came back.

I feel like on one hand it'd make external world sense for Tony to die due to finances, but I think it'd be cool to have him take on his comic mantle of joining the Guardians for a stint. Kind of an "escapism" kind of thing.

As for plot shield n what not you have Ant-Man and Spider-man protected by virtue of announced films. I'd say Strange kicks around by being Doctor Strange

(I feel wants to be in spoiler just cos?)

Also Ant Man 2 will be post-Infinity War but also Phase 3. Seems to be an Ant-Man thing. Not sure on any reason why it is.

Ok so I finished my rewatch earlier this week.

Captain America: Civil War - HOLDS UP. I forgot how much Ant-Man and Spider-Man steal the show. Every line they have is ace.

Doctor Strange - I had kind of forgot about this one but it HOLDS UP. It's so psychedelic it's shocking it got made in the first place. It kind of follows the Iron Man 1 course in some ways but the tonal differences make up for it

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 - I actually watched this one in March and I couldn't bring myself to watch it again a month later. I think it suffers from what Age of Ultron suffered from, but worse. It just doesn't do anything better than the first one and doesn't try to be a different movie. It's just more of the same. Maybe after Infinity War they can add some other MCU characters to the cast (like Hulk in Thor Ragnarok) to mix this up a bit. Doesn't hold up.

Spider-Man Homecoming - This film HOLDS UP. Ok we're getting into really recent films here. I liked this film on the first watch but I think watching it within context of the rest of the MCU made it even better. Tom Holland is perfect casting. Honestly, it's the only Spider-Man movie that felt like what Spider-Man should feel like.

Thor Ragnarok - This film from a few months ago HOLDS UP. It's the perfect way to do a Marvel sequel. Just like how Thor The Dark World took the serious parts of Thor 1 and built the film off form that, this film takes all the best parts of Thor and turns it into an action comedy. Less is more sometimes, that counts for a lot of things, including runtime.

Black Panther - ???

Avengers Infinity War - This film HOLDS UP. Oh wait.

This film is a wild ride and it has so many great things going on that I completely forgive it for not really working at all as a standalone film. If this was just a standard sequel to a normal (by that I mean franchises that don't have 19 films) it wouldn't have even half the characters. Not to mention it's clearly a part 1 of a 2 part story (Deathly Hallows, the last Hunger Games, etc). But FUCK IT I got to see The Winter Soldier spin Rocket Raccoon around as they both fired assault guns at aliens. Where is the best picture nomination?

I will now rank the MCU, now that I have a fresh perspective.

I quite liked Thor 2. The villain stuff's mostly crap but that goes for a lot of the MCU films. I'm nonplussed by people saying "it's too serious" because I just remember so many silly, fun, little moments.

Can't argue that it's not the worst Thor film (although, I haven't rewatched 1) but it's nowhere near as bad as Iron Man 2.

Thor:TDW was just as bad as IM2. Not only are the villains the worst in the MCU, the story is messy, Thor is not very sympathetic, and the writing is terrible throughout. Yes, Loki can be fun, but he's the least fun in this movie (though I, unlike many others, truly disliked him in Avengers). Sometimes I think Thor is worse than both, sometimes better, but that's because I have not watched Thor in years.

As an aside, I think Loki is the most misused and poorly-used character in the MCU who is otherwise a brilliantly cast and pretty great character.

I have to wonder something now that I've had some time to process Infinity War and the franchise as a whole.

Spoiler

Has anyone in the MCU suffered as much as Rocket Raccoon? In every single movie he's in someone precious to him dies. First he lost Groot. Word of God is that the Groot in the later movies is a different life. Then after that he loses Yondu, with whom he had just started to bond. And now he's the only Guardian left alive and he had to watch Groot die in front of him AGAIN. Why does Marvel love to torment him so much? I think I feel more for Punished Rocket than anyone else in the franchise. Thor is the only one I can think of who can compare.

@Mister Jack

Spoiler

I would say Thor has it worse. First he loses his brother, then he finds out his brother usurped his dad and isn't actually dead, but then his dad dies, then his sister destroys his home, then Thanos kills half of all his people (including Loki, so he loses his brother again).

Also, I just realized

Spoiler

where the hell was Valkyrie?!

Finally got around to watching Black Panther last night. It was alright.

Went to see Infinity War tonight. Holy. Fucking. SHIT! There were at least half a dozen times during the movie that I thought "This is the best movie ever!" Seeing all those characters interact on such a scale was just pure joy.

As for the ending

So, I had the disintegration thing spoiled because of the meme. I didn't know who it happened to but my guess was either Tony Stark or Captain America. I did NOT expect them to kill off virtually everyone but the original team! I mean, they fucking killed Spider-Man!! What the FUCK?!

Suddenly, it makes sense that they haven't announced any movies beyond the next Avengers. I mean, we all know Black Panther, Doctor Strange and Spider-Man are all getting sequels but they'd still be tipping their hand pretty hard.

I have to say, though. I'm kind of insulted that they think I have any interest in watching a fucking Ant-Man movie after this lol. Like, who gives a shit about that right now?!
