Whoa there. Nintendo has long ways to go on changing their e-shop policies before even considering other mobile platforms. Them offering their old games on other mobile platforms requires them to make a leap to an account system instead of the games being tied to a machine. Phones get replaced quite often and I would bet that someone could lose or break their phone within one year of purchase from Nintendo if they did this.

As it stands now, they can all of the sudden offer steep discounts on their games in their e-shop but even then I'll have a tough time buying it from them because if I brick my 3DS XL, I'll have good chance on losing my digital games.

I'm quite sure Nintendo will survive to Gen 9 but before then... they need new management or at least a new direction. I understand they want to be the alternative to the big two but they went way too low and they hold onto some outdated policies/practices. Diehard Nintendo customers will be diehard but I'm not one of them. I didn't buy a 3DS XL for Mario, Zelda and Pokemon (Hell, many people probably are not). Combining with the DS library, the 3DS has a huge library of games (Mainly JRPGs) I would play. The DS games I'll have no chance finding new from a retailer and if they are on the e-shop I would hesitate buying it from there. Similar thing is going on with the Wii/Wii U and older though the Wii U is an entirely different beast with other sets of problems. Me purchasing a Wii U is a big maybe since the Wii U is in a far weaker position than the 3DS.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that one: they need a far better e-shop policies, selection and prices (Wii U and 3DS). This won't carry a system but it will only help strengthen it. For the 3DS, it could be a goldmine.

Second is for the Wii U only... stronger hardware, stronger everything. I'm sure Mr. GOH can tell us everything. At this point in the console scene, the Wii U feels like nothing more than a knockoff brand by Nintendo.  While I don't consider the Wii U part of the Gen 8 console war but I would rank the Wii U a bit higher than the X1 just for the fact it'll have different games but even then it'll be a tough sell to me.

I think he's saying Nintendo needs to get hip to account systems in general before being able to sell mobile games. Or do you think Nintendo would just make apps for the iTunes store and Google Play?

But this is moot; the 3DS is doing well, so Nintendo will not release mobile games on other platforms. It's their home console business that is seriously terrible.

That commercial is great!
"Hey mom, we need to upgrade our Wii so we can play a rehash of a 3DS game, a remake of a GameCube game, and another game that's out for every other platform!!"

Jesus!

And at this point hoping for GameCube level of success for the Wii U is being VERY optimistic.

1) Moms don't know those things

2) The fact that it's a rehash only matters if they already have the 3DS one

3) Those kids are way too young to have played Wind Waker on the Gamecube

It's a sad reflection of the state of Wii U's library for those in the know, but that doesn't mean it won't be effective for people who aren't.

The Wii U commercial won't be effective for people not in the know because it does a terrible job of making the Wii U a good value proposition for anybody.

On the plus side, just think of how much fun you Wii U owners will have re-buying Super Mario World 3D and Wind Waker for Nintendo's 11th generation handheld!

I'm not sure I'm explaining self very well. They have their Virtual Console right? Runs a bunch of their older games (and others). They make a Virtual Console app (heck just call it "Nintendo App" and release their virtual console games through it. I'm not saying "stop making 3DS games and put them and future games on smartphone" just their virtual console stuff. It's a bit half-hearted but even Sony have some of their back catalogue out on mobiles (heck they even made the Xperia Play, though Nintendo don't have to go that far).

And they wouldn't have to be limited to iOS and Android, Windows Phone exists too and I'm sure Nintendo would be right at home there.  :P

Yes, Dean. As long as Nintendo has some proprietary and profitable way to sell their back catalog, they won't make it available on third party hardware. I'm fairly certain Nintendo believes its most valuable asset is its back catalog, so they'll sue it to push the 3DSas long as they're making moneu

But their Wii U isn't profitable, and when stacked against even a single phone model the 3DS sales pale, let alone against the combined might of iOS and Android phones.

Then on top of the slow hardware sales, given their known terrible digital infrastructure is their VC even that booming? I've seen quite a few remarks of folks wary on downloading games cos if one thing goes wrong you've lost it all. That and it assumes there's a fair overlap between people who played Nintendo consoles in the day are on Wii U and 3DS, and not shifted to other platforms and/or own a smartphone.

My take is within 3-5 years Nintendo will be faced with one of two scenarios; forfeit the home console market and focus entirely on the handheld side of things or become the next Sega.

The difference in success between the console and handheld divisions at this point is night and day and we've gone three generations where the home console for them has, for all intents and purposes, failed. No longer are they the console where third parties date not bother but they've now got the added problem of being machine that's way behind in power. At this point, i'd say the mindset is set and it'd be a Herculean task to reverse it. Going strictly handheld would let them cut their losses and focus on the area they're currently dominant in.

However, I suspect in actuality they'll soldier on and we'll see scenario two in the future.

That was pretty hilarious. Loved the ending with the clips of REAL black Friday craziness. That is why I stay away from crowded stores on Black Friday. People lose their damn minds over saving 20 bucks.

Maybe .... IF YOU'RE A LITTLE KID!

Seriously though, I'd only ever local co-op with my girlfriend but she sucks at video games. To the point that when we tried to play New Super Mario Bros Wii coop, it just resulted in me yelling at her.  So for me, portability + cheaper price beats local coop.
