RetroN

I remember this past summer I was excited for the device. After the Wii's Virtual Console, I've become a little hesitant to ever buy older games through what will eventually be an unused and closed system. Sure there's emulation, but I love building a collection and all you need are cartridges and old controllers laying around. Of course, you'd be wise to wait and see if the hardware stands up. The last RetroN had issues with audio for Genesis games, if I recall correctly.

I was looking into this again today. I've read that the Retron 5 was delayed to April this year. Next month there will be the Super Retro Trio from Retro-Bit that does NES, SNES, and Genesis games for $70. However, there's a GBA adapter that alone is $40, but bundled together is only an additional $20.

Still, wait on reviews for these things. You can find some unboxing videos for the Super Retro Trio, but it'll all come down to performance. The Retron 5 has Famicom capability and HDMI output, but the latter could be a weak point if video and audio turn out to be crap. Truth be told, that's probably why the thing has been delayed, renamed, delayed, and now is aiming at an April release. The Super Retro Trio stuck with composite and S-Video, so you'd think there wouldn't be a problem there. Only issue would be to have access to composite on your television, or pay for an adapter to HDMI.

That still doesn't solve the problem of wanting to play actual carts.

Never mind the legality of it. I may be many things, a cowboy, a poet, a scumbag, a hero, a vigilante, a chronic masturbator, a communist, a gang member, a black panther, a social liberal, fiscal conservative, a Canadian, a Canucks fan, a gnarly dude, a secret ninja, but I am NOT a pirate.

You realize that the RetroN doesn't actually play the game from the cart right?  When you stick the cart in it rips a rom from it and you play the rom from the console's onboard memory, using an emulator.  As long as you own the cart for the game you're playing the only difference is that the specific rom wasn't ripped from your specific cart.

You'd think with the long delays they'd have been able to get more of these produced. Resellers are buying them for 130 dollars a pop and reselling them for over 300+. At this rate I might as well wait for the N64 patent to expire and just get the Retron 6.  :P
