  1. 1. Who is buying?

    • Definitely
    • When the GOTY is out
    • Depends if it's on sale
    • Maybe one day
    • Probably not.
  2. 2. What version?

If Skyrim has bow and arrows or cross bows, I'm going archer. Swords are too mainstream.

Well this is what I was planning on doing, but when you can't climb onto a rock and slaughter the witless AI from out of reach where's the fun?

Has there been any news whether spears are back in?

Wow, so i just checked and saw that Oblivion didn't have any spears. No wonder i only played it for 3 hours.

Googled:

Unfortunately, Howard said that spears are not included in Skyrim, at least not currently. "Something like spears is really cool, it's just something with where we're putting our time with the other weapons. It just didn't make the cut right now."

This is dated February 11th. Fuck.

The question of spears was addressed a couple months ago in a Game Informer podcast. Todd Howard said that at that time, there were no spears. He tried to make it sound open-ended, but it sounded pretty clear to me that there won't be any spears.

At the time, I thought it was an interesting idea. I didn't know that Morrowind had spears.

In regards to the archery-from-atop-a-boulder thing, we don't know that you can't do that. What Howard has said is that they want the gameplay to feel more realistic and to cut down on cheap moves -- he didn't say anything about removing all cheap moves (btw, sorry to call them cheap, I'm not trying to hate).

In my opinion, what I took away from Howard's comments is that they want Skyrim to be less video gamey and more realistic. If a big ass troll were bearing down on an archer, I think it's realistic to say he'd try to secure the high ground. But there are still changes that I'd welcome to the gameplay.

For example, I didn't like how when you inevitably leveled up your acrobatics skills that you basically could moon-jump all over the place. I also hated how most sword battles devolved into super-fast move in, slash, move back patterns.

I liked the moon jumping. :( At least I liked what it meant for climbing onto buildings in town. I guess I was reading into the no acrobatics/cheap tricks comments a bit, since I haven't heard them first hand, were they from the podcast as well?

And that's okay. You're free to have that preference. My best friend is the same way. He just loves to challenge the "rules" of games -- jumping for minutes on-end until he surmounts a cliff, melee-ing a vehicle in Halo until he pushes it over a barricade, etc.

I enjoy it sometimes too. I used the physics to pull all kinds of tricks in the Oblivion realms such as creating a shortcut by jumping over lava, or dropping from the top of a tower and surviving because I managed to "slide" in certain areas.

I feel like a PR guy for Game Informer, but I'm pretty sure all of my info on Skyrim has come from there. There's the main feature on the game, a few videos, and the GI podcast with Todd Howard. All can be found here.

Don't worry about it, a lot of my info has come from you talking about the news you got from Game Informer so I'm not complaining. :P

As for the whole game breaking thing, definitely, although the thing I liked about Oblivion was that the acrobatics skill was actually put in purposefully by the developers, so it was more like rule bending than breaking, and that was a huge part of why I found the game so immersive. Still we don't know that much about it so I'll stay hopeful.

I don't know if I'd call that rule-bending considering the way the engine works. Being able to vertically climb a mountain by rapidly jumping is an oversight on the developer's part and they should make efforts to improve on that. Instead of improving on features like that or perhaps even including something interesting like a climbing system, they just axe the problem so they don't have to worry about fixing their own problems.

I don't think combat is going to be all that different in Skyrim, but I do believe it's mostly going to be all about melee and/or magic.

I might've missed a bit of news somewhere, but I'm still not sure if Skyrim will sport DX11 on release.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-04-19-pc-skyrim-scales-up-as-youd-expect

This being the latest thing I could find. In particular:

"When it comes to DirectX 11 there are things they get us for free, like performance gains. You're going to get performance gains out of it versus an older version.

"But the specifics DX11 does, like tessellation and all that kinda stuff, we aren't taking advantage of that right now. That doesn't mean we won't in the future. We aren't right now because we want to author it so it looks great."

What I'm getting from this is, it will sport DX11 on the PC, but DX11-specifics like tessellation won't be on it, yes?

I read it as "It'll be DirectX 9 on release. We may make it DX11 later on down the line, but at least saying this sooth over the news it's DX9 only even if we never talk of it again"

Annnnd all of the sudden I have a feeling the game is being geared towards the consoles now.

Sorry, but not using the absolute latest tech doesn't mean something is geared towards consoles.Oblivion, Fallout 3, and New Vegas all seemed to me to be "geared" equally.

Oh yeah, holding New Vegas DLC on the Xbox only for two months was some real fair equality.

Anyway, all the signs seem to be pointing to a game more "streamlined" for console gamers (like simplifying combat and skills). I'm just glad it's still coming to the PC.

You could try mods, I guess... some mods add in spears, but they're basically only reskinned two-handed swords with an adjusted reach, I think. It looks incredibly awkward.

Your spears: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10170

Your animations: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27865

Only problem, of course, is that the animations replaces the one-handed attack animations. But yeah, still possible. Tesnexus has everything.

If we're bringing DLC into this then you can forget about the whole "can't play after the ending" argument.

Not to mention it's DLC, it has nothing to do with the core game and the development of it.

Who said consoles require simplifying things? This is a series that's already been on consoles and worked just fine.

I'm not saying that conclusions haven't been jumped to, at or up and down on in some spectacularly emotional repartee but it's not fair to shit all over 'this whole thread'.

The majority of 'this whole thread' has been healthy speculation and balanced discussion of what we like, what we want, and what we are worried about from the news we've heard so far about the next Elder Scrolls game.

Those are lovely high horses you're galloping through on, but mounts haven't even been confirmed for Skyrim so howzat for jumping to conclusions, huh?

(Sorry for taking such an offensive tone, but I got caught up in the rhetoric. :P)

Edit: In case my parenthesis wasn't clear enough, the tone of this post was hyperbolic, and while the point still stands it's not meant to be particularly insulting.

I'm not a Bethesda fan either, Aga, for the record. I feel like they make amazing games, and then cripple them in some very crucial way. It's like creating a beautiful work of art and then ripping the corner off. Drives me crazy about them.

That said, I just think our criticism should be a little more connected to actual observations, rather than just pessimistic stabs in the dark.
