Waldorf and Statler
Shouts are basically dragon magic. Magic only you and dragons can use. It's to make you feel special.
TheMightyEthan
Oh yeah, I don't have a problem with the magicky aspect of it, I just think the idea of you screaming a word in dragon language to make something happen is kind of dumb. If they'd just called it "dragon magic" and had it just be something that you can do, I'd have been fine with it (even though that's kind of a boring name). Waldorf and Statler
The reason they called them Shouts is so I can later on do a montage of all the shouts with the song SHOUT! SHOUT! LET IT ALL OUT!

Frankly I really like the idea of saying some words to make magic. It'll make me feel more gandalf-y. I wasn't sold on why it was different from normal magic, but Jesus seemed to clear it up. Thank Jesus.

TheMightyEthan
Yeah, nothing wrong with incantations, maybe it's just something about the name "Shouts" that bothers me. I guess I should just be glad they didn't try to go all EndWar on us and have us actually scream into a microphone to use them. *Edit - Now that I think about it, that actually might have been kinda cool... madbassman39
You would end up with people like me, who would yell stuff like "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!" or do what I do with my Siri like function on my phone, which is "Text someone bitch" or "search for cookies, bitch". I like to be little my technology when talking to it, and I also like to hear my self speak.
deanb
The shouts and the dragons aren't strictly related. The shouts are a thing some folks have, some don't. If you've seen the first 20 minutes the head of the skyrim rebel scum is someone who can do shouts (he's also gagged too) as are the grey throat folks in the mountain that teach you. However these people aren't "Dragonborn". Tiber Septim, Jean Luc Septim n Martin Septim are dragonborn, don't have the shouts though. Seems you just have a fortunate blend of genes so you can combine the two. Hence it not being called "dragon magic". Cos it isn't. So normal person will shout "YOU SHALL NOT PASS" and you'll instead shout "OUYAY HALLSAY OTSAY ASSPAY!!", which makes you better. @jesus christ: Remember heavy armour dulls your magic skills. deanb
The arrow part? edit: see I'd F5 then jump infront of that saw. Oh and from what I've seen, and from memories of Oblivion on PS3 and PC: I'm using my 360 pad (thank god it's supported unlike Oblivion which required crazy work arounds)

Also, this looks fucking awful. But the game is already preordered, so I'll try to not pay attention to the visuals(as if). Maritan
And here I've been thinking how Skyrim looks shit tons better than any of their other games... Actually, Skyrim looks better in some ways, mainly in shadows. Before Skyrim only characters had them, but now everything has it's own shadow(from what I've seen in the videos) and the picture is more pleasant. Until you get close. btw, I hope you remember this video Look at the chains and the environment and then at the final product. tonyp2121
The visuals are bad???? Maybe not amazing but its a huge open world game. If they didnt compromise on visuals no console p[layer would be able to play it and PC players would need a high end rig to play it. Seems like a fair enough trade to me. Kovach_
Just because it wouldn't play on a console doesn't mean you'd need a super mega awesome PC to run it. But since Skyrim was made for consoles, i don't mind a shitty port (well, i do, but like that's gonna change anything) since i'll have mods. Good thing i grew up with pixels so i'm not that into super pretty graphics.
RockyRan
One of the many reasons why I'm holding off on Skyrim for a few weeks before getting it. I don't want to plunk down the full $60 (who the hell priced this? A console port at $60? LOL) for god knows what. They haven't shown ANYTHING regarding the PC version and I'm not in the mood for "unpleasant surprises". The potential issues are very high. There could be low res textures, bad pop-up with low draw distance, low FOV, shitty mouse acceleration, graphics card issues, unstable builds requiring immediate patching, said patching causing game save corruption, shitty console UI with hilariously oversized fonts and buttons. And who knows? Maybe the game just isn't good. This could be the one ES that's just too streamlined for the lowest common denominator. Let's face it, that's the road they've been taken and I'm just waiting for Bethesda to break the camel's back in that regard. I'm probably being cynical, but even if none of the above are present in the game I still love Oblivion mostly for the mods, and the modding tools won't be available at launch IIRC, meaning anything that nags me in the vanilla game will nag me even more because I know there'd be a mod to fix it if the tools were there or if enough time had passed for some modder to do it. ES games are one of the rare "wine" games that simply get better with age. I'm in absolutely no hurry to buy a Bethesda game at launch, especially with how often they love to leave some nice bugs/balance issues in the games at that time. madbassman39
So, watching some gameplay and watching the creator I have to say I feel bad if I chose Imperial as the game allows you to play and try so many different races. I enjoy the idea of playing as another race, but when I play something like this for some reason I want to try to project myself into the game through the avatar. When I play MMOs or any other game I usually don't worry too much about the avatar, but with Elder Scrolls I just struggle to do anything but. I tried out Breton in Oblivion and enjoyed it, and even a wood elf, but my main character was an Imperial. I also wouldn't mind being a Nord as I have a fairly large body build, plus I like Vikings and the Nords remind me of Vikings. I want to be the stoic hardened Viking, but I feel like the game is pushing me to be a Nord and that puts me off. Strange? Yes very much, but I can't help it. The only race that I would never question is if they had a Frog race, like the Frogloks of Everquest or the Hylek of Guild Wars 2. Frogs are badass. Frog people? Doubly so. Also, should we post our Skyrim adventures in this thread or should we make a second thread just for describing our adventures (with spoiler tags of course). I think a lot of the fun of the games are talking about what happened to you during your own journey in the world, and this one seems to make each journey more unique for each player. [image of cow] Yeah I'll probably be giving it a shot with a 360 pad, unless they actually bother with supporting kb/m properly this time around. As for visuals ever since their first trailer I've thought whatever it is they're attempting with this fur type texture thing going on (the giants/ogres have it too on their skirts) looks gash. That's looking pret The visuals are bad???? Maybe not amazing but its a huge open world game. Now look at this Morrowind screenshot. [image of morrowind] I'll wager that's a modded version of Morrowind. Though I have a feeling my modded Oblivion is going to upset my view of Skyrim too (mainly Qarls texture pack). I've not seen anything in-depth (And obviously we've seen next to nothing of the PC version since it's the 360 version that leaked) but it's certainly not a huge visual leap. Fingers crossed on the PC version. I know they've bragged on beign able to compress it to the 6GB for the 360, but come on, PC has much more than the limits of the 360 DVD. high-res textures out the box, not a mod or later download. I also wouldn't mind being a Nord as I have a fairly large body build, plus I like Vikings and the Nords remind me of Vikings. Everyone seems to be doing Nord (at least the people with the leaked game). So unimaginative. As for sticking stuff in here or another thread. Up to you guys. If you make a thread for putting in adventures/backstories and leave this one for discussing actual game (i.e "it's broken" "DLC coming soon") then I won't stop you. One of the many reasons why I'm holding off on Skyrim for a few weeks before getting it. I don't want to plunk down the full $60 (who the hell priced this? A console port at $60? I'm in absolutely no hurry to buy a Bethesda game at launch, especially with how often they love to leave some nice bugs/balance issues in the games at that time. From what I hear the draw distance has been improved (though I think that's maybe a console thing, since I could see Imperial City all the way from Sky Temple. Unless they're talking the LOD, that was pretty bad at fairly close ranges, hills became mushy textures). It is a bit worrying they're holding back on showing off PC and the only response to "can we get some PC footage at some point is "you've seen it: the first trailer" as if that's what we meant. Unless the bit from a dragons eye view is actually in the PC game of course, but I strongly doubt it. Oblivion was pretty bad port (not like Borderlands bad, or locked FPS bad, but certainly UI bad) so I won't mind too much if it's " shitty console UI with hilariously oversized fonts and buttons", but would hope that's improved upon. deanb
Take your pick: PC: Rockpapershotgun - http://www.rockpaper...yrim-review-pc/ PC gamer - http://www.pcgamer.c...-skyrim-review/ Console(360): Giantbomb: http://www.giantbomb...-33394/reviews/ Joystiq: http://www.joystiq.c.../skyrim-review/ Grauniad: http://www.guardian....w?newsfeed=true Escapist: http://www.escapistm...V-Skyrim-Review edit: yep it's console. I quite like Giantbombs kinda banner thing at top of the review. Might steal it. Obviously PC gamer n RPS don't really need to state which version they get. DocSeuss
Can I laugh at the people on Kotaku who got really mad at me for saying the animations look pretty bad compared to most games? They started going on and on about how it was justified, or how I was just a hater, or how I... well, you get the idea. Seems a bit silly to me. The animations still look clunky, the engine looks like a modded gamebryo... I don't see why people feel the need to praise things that aren't there. There's plenty of other things about the game that sound like they're worth liking. The visuals are bad???? Maybe not amazing but its a huge open world game. If they didnt compromise on visuals no console p[layer would be able to play it and PC players would need a high end rig to play it. Seems like a fair enough trade to me. Red Dead Redemption and Alan Wake (it's not huge, open world, but the engine can run it with relative ease) say hello.

deanb
Red Dead looked equally gash. (It was also pretty damn empty.) In fact the "fur" type look is pretty similar now I think of it. @Tenshi: What do you mean? Mine cost like £20, which is half of what Steam is charging. And you get a map. Buying Skyrim on Steam is fucking insane. Also Skyrim came early for me. However: Oh n Duke of Pwn is playing already, he VPN'ed it. One VPN service even set up specially for Skyrim. https://www.vpnsecure.me/ if you're interested. Just NEVER BUY GAMES THROUGH A VPN. (It's illegal, oh n you'll be banned, unlocks are fine though)
