    • Definitely
    • When the GOTY is out
    • Depends if it's on sale
    • Maybe one day
    • Probably not.
  2. 2. What version?

I know I'm responding to older posts, but NPC's do react to your individual attributes. I get all sorts of mage hatred just walking around. I guess they can sense my high destruction magic skill. I also get random comments about being Argonian. I've heard comments both inside and outside of formal dialogue. In fact, the vast majority of comments about being a magic user are outside of dialogue. Those Nords sure do not like magic....

Also, protip: turn off regular antialiasing and use FXAA instead. It looks about as good as 4x AA (better in some ways, as it will antialias transparencies, textures, shadows, etc, which regular AA will not), and it's WAY less resource intensive so it lets you turn everything else up higher.

I'm playing Battle Mage Jesus, so my character is ridiculous enough that I can just do what I feel like without it really clashing.

Ah but can yuou walk on water yet?

(seriously, can you? I feel like they've taken out a fucking ton of spells. Sure mage is awesome to use but main reason destruction is so high for me is because the other schools only have like 1-2 useful spells)

btw does anyone feel the world is really sparse/small? I'm 30hrs in (slightly less in reality, I use the overlay for chats quite a lot) and it feels like I have half the map explored already. Just a comparison but Oblivion had 50 forts alone. There's as many if not more Aylied ruins (I've found one Dwarven ruin), two dozen mines and a shit ton of caves (70 or so), and then the various oblivion gates. Skyrim has an achievement for finding 100 places.

The barrows are neat, and the traps and puzzles a tad more imaginative. The forts fucking suck in comparison, sure they look like actual forts unlike Oblivions round circle of stone wall, but at least Oblivion had plenty to do on the inside, the Skyrim forts only have a few rooms inside to present a more realistic looking fort layout.

Dark Brotherhood quests suck too (at least up to now). Oblivion you had to kill people by dropping shit on their head, breaking into the Imperial prison, swapping out medicines for poison, and best of all go to a party. Current dark brotherhood quests are: Kill people, don't matter how. If you get caught then pay the fine or serve your time. Good luck.

Sure I'm still having fun, and mechanically there's a huge amount of improvements, but in other areas, especially quests and exploration, it's just so disappointingly underwhelming. Pretty much all I have are "go here/kill this/clear dungeon x/retrieve item B". So little in the way of creative quests. I want to meet people with paranoia, underhanded shop keepers, save artists, enter dreamworlds, etc.

Also Radiant Story kicks in way too often for my tastes which isn't helping. I currently have 3 bounties in my quests. I'd have thought it'd only kick in if you're running low on quests but it seems if you talk to an inn keeper on jobs you'll get one.

whoops, this was just meant to be a sea striding joke :/

How DARE you take my idea to play as myself?!

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?! THE BIBLE?!

Has anybody found out if there's anywhere to go to find armor that's better than steel? I see people around the Companion's base with better armor but I don't want to kill them just to steal it.

Hell there's that nord woman who wants to get in your pants/follow you in Whiterun, and I think she has either daedric armor or something really similar. Now my character isn't a bad guy by far, but he's no saint [HA]. He's always stealing soul gems when he gets a chance.

I've played around 25 hours and I feel like I've really only explored a quarter of the map. I've also found four dwemer ruins (two on the same smallish mountain, a bunch of more involved dungeons and half a dozen forts that had some nice stuff. I dunno what you're complaining about, Dean. Sure, there were a shitload of forts and dungeons in oblivion, but they were all awful. I feel like there's just as much stuff in Skyrim, actually. More variety, though.

Can't speak to the Db quest chain; I didn't play it in Oblivion and haven't found it yet in Skyrim.

Around 15 hours in according to my estimate. Better than Oblivion, that's for sure.

Some random thoughts:

Companion Quests were alright;

Dungeons (under which I mean caves, crypts, ruins and so on) seem to be hand-made without using templates like Oblivion did, but I'd need to play more until I can make sure;

Dark Brotherhood initiation mission and Thieves' Guild initiation missions are miles beyond anything in Oblivion or Morrowind;

Animations still suck;

Combat still sucks;

UI sucks;

NPCs still tell you their life stories without you even initiating conversation;

I am having fun regardless.

I believe that if you shout enough, the guards will tell you to stop because you are scaring the villagers. I don't think they will actually do anything though.

One of my favorite parts of this game has to be the way they handled karma. There is no bar telling you how much of a dick/saint you are, and I find that great. If you are a horrible person, then all the power to you. Some options (Stormcloak or Imperial) are morally grey, and I really like that.

This is a good article, and I agree with most of it. Worth a read.

The guards did nothing to stop it in Whiterun, because I'm a thane there. I've only seen it happen once, but it was funny when it did.

Not sure if it's been posted yet, couple of .ini tweaks.

Wow, those water tweaks REALLY make the water look a lot better. Which is good, because while the water looks nice up close it's been bugging me how shitty it looks at a distance.

Roommate showed me Can You RUN It, and it looks like I make the minimum requirements. I think if I upgrade a few things, it might even be near "Recommended."

Still, I don't think I'll be getting Skyrim any time soon, but I'll go with PC. (Steam will probably have sales soon anyway, right?)

So in a moment of weakness I caved in to the hype and torrented Skyrim and MW3. Well, I was always going to torrent MW3 because I wanna play the continuation of Price and Soap's story, but fuck paying 60 bucks for that lazy rehash. I bought it last year when it was called Black Ops. But I digress.

So, I figured I'd give Skyrim a quick try, probably not get into it too much and buy it later down the line, or when the inevitable GOTY drops. Started playing and about halfway through the first dungeon I realized there was no way in hell that was happening. The game already had its hooks into me in a way even Oblivion and Fallout never did.

It's not perfect by any stretch of the word, but holy shit I love the changes they've implemented. Not picking any major skills or class and having a perks system instead just works. Might piss off hardcore TES fans, but I think it was a brilliant move. It means I'm that much more unlikely to end up with a screwed up build that's too weak for the enemies' level. Hell, I fought against 3-4 enemies simultaneously and managed to win. In Oblivion, I would've been hopelessly outnumbered in that fight.

The UI was obviously designed with a controller in mind. It's fucking stupid that you can't click on menu items directly and have to navigate the menus with WASD. But at least it works well and is intuitive, I guess.

I absolutely love how spellcasting works, though. When I realized that as long as I held down the mouse button my hand would keep shooting a constant stream of fire, well that was a holy shit moment. It's a simple change but it makes such a huge difference. It was very annoying in Oblivion to have to cast stuff like restoration five times in a row and watch the animation every single time.

Also, it's possible that my expectations were simply too low because this is a Bethesda game, but a few things actually impressed me. First, the water looks awesome. The first time I came across a stream, I just stood there looking at it for about 5 minutes. Next, shortly after I realized how spellcasting now worked, I decided to have some fun. So as an enemy approached me, I readied my flame spell and unleashed fire upon him. Then some fucking grease on the floor caught fire and not only did he fall down instantly, but it also killed the fucker that was a few feet behind him. My jaw dropped and I could not contain my giddiness. This surprised me in the same way I was surprised when I first saw the collapsing building in that E3 2009 Uncharted 2 demo. Just... woah.

I really hate playing without paying, though. :(

No idea when I'll be able to afford it, but I need to buy this game asap.

Oh and a quick off-topic. I mentioned a few times how DCUO would always crash on startup for me. Well, turns out there was a bigger issue. Both Skyrim and MW3 did the same thing, so I got on Steam and realized any semi-recent game did the same thing. Human Revolution, which I'd played only 2 months ago, behaved in the same way, but older stuff like Deus Ex and Doom 3 would launch fine. Could never figure out what was wrong, so I had to format. Luckily, I keep my windows installation on a separate, smaller partition with nothing particularly important on it, so formatting is always painless B)

$29.90 on intkeys. depends if you want to try those russian cd key sites...

Regarding the spells, I saw an argonian cast fireball, the normal fireball, not flame like FLD mentioned above (where you hold down the attack key). I was dodging his fireballs, while casting trying to burn him with my flame.

Then he hid behind a tree, and I killed him with my sword.
