deanb
Yes GOH. I have difficulty with shapes. Nothing to do with everything being the same damn colour. Oblivion: active quest is red, I am yellow, custom is green. Buildings are sepia. There's also a button in the corner to open a Legend. Skyrim: You are black n white (bet you can't even find me on here, at least without difficulty), the active quest is black n white, the buildings are black n white, the map is black, white n green, the custom marker is blue and the legend has been removed. (Which I know has lead to a fair amount not realising what the horseshoe symbols were for. tbh I still don't understand a lot of them. The dragon roosts have been fairly consistent, as are farms. But not all farms are marked, some farms are mines, there's 3 types of castle/fort icons, and there's a "Pass" symbol too which funnily enough marked the least passable part of that particular mountain.) But yes I obviously struggle with the shapes.
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
Yeah, see, that is way too cluttered, and a legend would have been greatly appreciated. Otherwise? Fantastic game.
deanb
Just some minor additions: Oblivion, this is one of my chests, filtered by armour types sorted by value. I've also nudged my mouse over to point to the "enchanted item" marker. Here's my chest in Skyrim. Filtered by nothing, sorted by I don't know what. I tell if an Item is enchanted or not by manually putting it in another cupboard. Which I do with most the useful things actually. Here's my active statuses in Oblivion And here in Skyrim I've ended up with the same status listed three times, with one of them having two statuses that's actually listed right at the top. Hoorah for redundancy And here's all my Skills in Oblivion. Here's some of my skills in Skyrim We've not even mentioned the ever changing status of the E n R in using chests yet. If I'm in my inventory then using E will eat/drink/equip said item, pushing R will store it (unless there's more than 5 in which case I need to hit E). If I'm in the Chests Inventory then using E will take it out and pushing R will take everything. Makes perfect sense.
Hot Heart
Oblivion's default map was bad, but is Skyrim's in some sort of 3D? I'm not disagreeing with Skyrim's menus looking bad, but is that not a modded version of Oblivion's that you're showing there?
deanb
Yeah the map in Oblivion is 3D. Limited though, only a few degrees of rotate given. Though there's a video I threw up a page or so back of a "mod" that could let you use it much more freely. It's running Darnified, which swaps out the default font (though I went with one of the less low-key options, let's you colourise the map, completely change the inventory layout, and a few tweaks here n there. As you can tell I pretty much just had it change the fonts, and shrink the compass n status bars on the bottom, I was never much of a heavy modder. Textures, quest leveller n unofficial patches. Hot Heart
Yeah, that's the one I used. Couldn't remember the name. Point being, it seems a bit odd to compare the default Skyrim UI to a modded Oblivion one (if that's what you're doing). Although, I guess Bethesda really should've learned from it. deanb
It's pretty much just a different font. If I was comparing the modded re-colourised map, or the grid layout inventory sure. And the Status bar is only smaller, not tweaked from a default of centrally aligned health bar. Though there was one part of Darnified, that I've only just noticed now, that they seem to have used; fading HUD.
Hot Heart
I think it's shrunken the text down a lot, which I guess falls under font, but it does make a major difference when compared to Skyrim's masses of wasted space. TheMightyEthan
The menu doesn't feel like a porting issue (Except for the vagueness of mouse clicks, partially fixed by disabling the default of "360 pad support" in the settings) but just an overall design issue. It affects the console version too. Having the list start half way down the screen is the first big mistake. There's a large lack of information too. I think some of its problems are a porting issue. For instance, in the skill menu, you have to move between skill trees one at a time. That makes sense on a controller because you'll be navigating with a stick or d-pad and you'll hit the direction you want to move. On PC however, I should be able to click on the tree four spaces down and go directly to it, without having to move over one tree at a time. What you said about form over function definitely applies though. That skill menu is pretty, but it's a bitch to use.
MasterDex
What you said about form over function definitely applies though. That skill menu is pretty, but it's a bitch to use. It's annoyed me every time I've used it. "Oh, what's that skill do? No, not that one, shit! not that one either, I want to look at that one! FUCK! Ah, there it is! novice lockpicks are easier...meh." It looks great but c'mon! This is a game! It shouldn't be form over function! And the chests are so annoying! It isn't even sorted alphabetically. Hopefully, these issues will be ironed out once the mod tools are released. Playing in Hard mode makes it where I'm too scared to fight giants still. I'll try again later but as of right now I'm keeping the hell away. Do what I do. Arrow>Run>Arrow>Run>Arrow>Run>Arrow>Run>Run>Run>RUUUN! I find peaks, crevasses and deep rivers are useful for keeping them at a distance too.
deanb
A redditor mocked this up as a mod request. Fuck yes. (though I feel the active status this could do with being put elsewhere) It neither makes sense to put it with Inventory, and it also could get quite big if you're good with Enchanting. Cyber Rat
State of Tamriel at the start of Skyrim. If you want to read up on it. Edit: slight correction about the map, Northern Hammerfell is independent. tl;dr: High Elves fucked everyone up, lizards took over what was left of Morrowind, Cyrodiil fought and eventually signed a peace treaty, Redguards ended up being the ultimate badasses. Mr. GOH!
I dunno, Dean. I had zero problems finding your quest goal on the Skyrim map, but the Oblivion map gave me a seizure immediately. I couldn't find the "you" marker, it's true. But I don't have that problem in my game at all. In fact, I haven't had any problems navigating whatsoever. I do think there should be a legend and that the icons should be consistent, however. And I also agree that the PC version should have m+k/b friendly menus. I use a gamepad, so the menus do not bother me. On the other hand, it seems like we're arguing about very minor quibbles so I'll stop and accept the PXOD will be marking dinging Skyrim for problems that I just do not have with the game. deanb
Yeah saw it on Reddit, both maps. Since both seem to have their own bits done wrong I never bothered posting. e.g it's not just the top of hammerfell that's independent, but all of it. They were invaded, given up by the Empire, then fought the Dominion off. Red Mountain certainly tied up any ideas people had about a Morrowind based expansion On the other hand, it seems like we're arguing about very minor quibbles so I'll stop and accept the PXOD will be marking dinging Skyrim for problems that I just do not have with the game. ? Also don't get me wrong. I've ploughed 50hours into it this week alone. It's not a bad game. It just has some really obvious problems that could have been avoided so easily. The main upside is that there's mods that can fix most of the issues. (though it should never be a crutch)
Mr. GOH!
Oh, I just assumed you were gonna review it. One of my pet peeves in reviews is when reviewers dedicate a section of criticism to minutiae but miss larger critiques. XD I think there are some valid criticisms of the game, too, to be fair. It is not the Best Game Ever by any means. I think it was oversold on the graphics, and it feels like a moderately updated Oblivion engine to me. I also think the sparse setting freed up more graphical/CPU resources for other tasks and that if the game weren't in sparse wilderness the graphics would suffer. But my biggest graphic pet peeve is the vegetation/animation draw distance; static distant waterfalls ruin what would otherwise be majestic vistas. Same goes for when you see the repeating texture pattern on the ground when looking down onto plains or valleys from a great height. In fact, the texture patterns made me immediately think of New Vegas. Those are minor frustrations, however, when set against how much I enjoy this sort of open world RPG (though I still dislike Oblivion). One thing I would like is the ability to customize spells. I never did it in Morrowind or Oblivion because I never played magic users, but I'd like to try it out in Skyrim. I imagine industrious modders are hard at work on just such a thing, though. madbassman39
Does equipping your follower's with better armor and weapons even matter? I can't really tell, and if not, I'm selling Lydia's dwarven armor!
deanb
You can pick-pocket Briarhearts from Birarheart Forsworn. (and it kills them)
CorgiShinobi
I got me Skyrim tonight, yep! I went to Best Buy with a $5 off certificate, but all their PC copies were pre-orders that wouldn't be up for grabs till tomorrow. Tomorrow is a very busy day for me. I went to FYE where I could still get a discount. I've learned today that if it's not overpriced, then FYE probably don't have many copies either. GameStop for $59.99... Yeah, I could get it on Steam, but if I'm getting a PC game for that high of a price, I rather have a disc.

Waldorf and Statler
i really need to find more dragon shouts. I've killed 7 dragons total man, and I don't wanna waste it on that "confuse the enemy with a random shout" shout. That'll be useful when I'm a sneaky character but until then no thx. CorgiShinobi
So I disabled Vsync thanks to the previous link with the tweaks, but for advice, where should I store the backup file? Of course, I only added a single line to the file, so maybe it's not that important. My main problem is frame rate. My PC can handle better settings, but something causes the rate to drop. Any other suggestions as to what could be the problem?
Waldorf and Statler
So the ebony ore mine was restocked after 30 days. So since I have such a sweet armor, I decided to give my companion some ebony armor. She has that sarcastic response when I ask her to carry it, but I'll be damned if she doesn't love how I pamper her. We must be the biggest badass duo in Skyrim. People see us pass by and they say "Look. It's a guy in daedric and a chick in ebony. RUN SHIT RUN THEY'RE COMING HERE"
