Get this mod Dean linked to earlier.

Using the 1-9 keys is handy, but AFAIK there's no way to control which hand the quick button goes to. This mod makes getting through your favorites menu MUCH faster and more convenient.

That's because the game does a horrible job of telling you anything. I was 20 hours in until I found out you could sprint.

True dat. I got 50 hours in before figuring out how to use the favorites menu. The game always said "press F to favorite" at the bottom of the screen, but F did nothing. That's because I'd rebound the key to switch your view from F to P (because why would I use that when I have a mouse wheel?), which apparently also rebinds the favorite button. Would be nice if the interface had acknowledged that change...

I bought this for the PS3 (yes, mock me), and it's a lot of fun. I'm en route to meeting with the people to talk about the shouts, but I'm side questing at the minute.

Breton who's main weapon is a bound sword. Battle tactics are: Summon Flame Atronach, let Flame Atronach aggro. Fire Firebolts at the enemy. Let follower attack. Go in with bound sword and mop up. It's relatively effective.

Lydia just got caught in a nasty crossfire of firebolts and died, however.

I won't allow Lydia to die. She has a few times, but I always reload the save. Every time I'm wandering through the wilderness and turn around and she's not there I panic and think maybe she died somewhere, so I have to fast-travel to see if she shows up.

I have no idea why I'm so attached to Lydia.

^ Same with me. And then worry that I may have actually lost her an hour ago and will have to redo a lot.

Most of the time though you can just wait for 1 hour and she shows up, unless I guess she got stuck on a tree or something.

Note also that sometimes she vanishes and won't be there when you fast travel. Just fast travel to Dragonsreach and enter the keep. She'll be there.

Speaking of companions, had a lot of fun with Brelyna Maryon. Who was dual-wielding 2 staff of fireballs. Especially when inside houses. All kinds of stuff ends up flying all over the place. Had to spend time looking through the junk on the floor to find a quest item. Which of course, wasn't there, I was just not looking at my map correctly.

I lost Lydia last night after a dragon attacked and some orcs or dwarves got on me (something about a bounty). I couldn't find her anywhere! I backtracked to where I had been with her last. No sign. So, I got the map and did the fast-travel to Whiterun. She was there! I thought I may have lost her permanently.

I love that hulking woman!

You know I'm not sure on that one. It's all very mixed messages and Iv'e a feeling it depends on how n what you do. Like if you point console at a person n say "kill", or "AddAllSkills 20"(or whatever it'd be) then yeah your'e fucked. Also it's only for "that session". So if you save then close n reopen the game you'll be in a new session.

Son of a BITCH. Another thing I wasn't aware of. :|

And about Lydia... I have in multiple occasions lost her so I go out to find her, fearing with every corner I make, I would find her body. The thing is, I know she cannot die unless I do the finishing blow.

Lydia can die? I never knew that, she seemed pretty invincible like some of the followers in Fallout. Now I kind of feel back about intentionally setting off traps on her. :(

One was the pressure plated set of spikes, impaled her good and proper, but she just Gears crawled a little bit as her health restored.

The followers can die. But as Malicious pointed out, only at your hands. Otherwise they just Gears of War their way out of it. So be safe in the knowledge that if your follower has died, then it's you that killed them.

Not entirely true, I had one follower die because he was set on fire, as he went to bow out and was still burning as he was trying to recover. He died by a very very very rare circumstance, but I know I didn't kill him because he was about 20 to 30 feet behind me. It was a sad death, and I hate the Thalmor because of it!

Yeah, they can die even without the player killing them. When they bow to recover NPCs will not continue to attack them, but they can still be damaged by AOEs. I've seen Lydia get killed by the shouts of Draugr Scourges and Deathlords.

For anyone playing I'd actually suggest doing a large chunk of the main quest before much else. You get given quite a few useful shouts and such. I'm up to the bit where you get told to search for the games namesake and I think just after that comes a certain shout everyone else has been saying is great for melee types.

  • Why does it level my one-handed skill when I'm using two weapons?

I was about to comment how weird this was until I read your question again. I was thinking you were leveling one-handed with two-handed weapons.

You're duel wielding. You're using one-handed weapons on each hand and that goes towards the one-handed skill tree.

  • Why does it level my one-handed skill when I'm using two weapons?

If you're using, for example, a destruction spell in one hand (sparks, fire, etc.) and a sword/mace/any other one handed weapon, the game will level both your destruction and one-handed skill and your destruction skill. In your case, if you're using 2 swords, even though you're technically using 2 hands, they're both one-handed weapons, so you'll be leveling that skill instead of the two-handed skill like you would be if you were using, for example, a greatsword.

EDIT: Ninja'd by MaliciousH.

I'm assuming all of you got Lydia as your first follower... so why stick with her? As far as I have heard, the level/stats of the followers gets set at the level you met them. So I was running around with a level 4-5 Lydia when I was level 30. I decided to then go with the female housecarl they give you in Solitude. Once I'm in level 45 or so I'll get that Lion chick from Rift to follow me.

Then level 60 to 80 I'll hire some other female follower. I like having a female follower. I pretend it gives my character depth.
