Games You've Beat in 2014

Finished First Light today.  I don't think I'm gonna be able to plat this one, some of the challenge trophies look like stuff I won't have the patience to try to go for (like saving 50 hostages in one Rescue match).

Overall though I thought it was quite excellent, a nice return to Second Son.

(like saving 50 hostages in one Rescue match)

Apparently this doesn't have to be done in a single run. I thought it did, because it wasn't counting up for me, but that's because I forgot that you have to run into the hostages to save them, not just eliminate their attackers.

Yeah, now that I realized that I'm retarded I've completed every challenge except for overloading 25 turrets and killing 50 enemies with super bolts.  Both of those are things that aren't hard, you just have to play the right mode long enough for them to happen.  I anticipate I'll have it platted by the end of the day.

Sucker Punch games are always fairly easy to platinum if you put in enough time.  Some people would say that the trophies have no point unless they're hard but frankly I think the point of trophies is to be fun, and agonizing over a trophy with ludicrous requirements isn't my idea of fun.

Yeah, I think trophies/achievements are best used when they encourage you to do something fun that you might not have otherwise done.

*Edit* - As far as SP's games go, you're right.  The only reason I didn't plat the first two was because I didn't enjoy them enough to feel like playing through them twice.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I see it, although my personal favorite kinds of trophies are the ones that are more like Easter eggs.  One of my favorite examples is from the Ghostbusters game.  There was a trophy in that one called "Kosher."  How do you get it?  Blast the ham off the catering table at the barmitzvah.  I dunno why but I just love that.

I beat Destiny...I think?  There's no more planets to go to and the game played a cutscene so I guess I finished the "story" of the game.  I have mixed feelings about it.  The gameplay is fun enough with friends, and I guess that's what really matters when you get right down to it, but this game might have the worst story and campaign I have ever played.  I mean, even the Battlefield games have better campaigns than Destiny.  At least there you have some idea of what's even going on.  Not in Destiny.  From beginning to end I was completely clueless about what was happening around me, and when it was over I actually had to go online to verify the ending because I couldn't believe they'd really finish it like that.  I really expected better from Bungie on this.  The ending was Halo 2 bad.  Maybe even worse.

I guess I forgot to post it when I bought it but I just "beat" Hexcells Infinite. It just showed up on Steam out of nowhere and it was a no-brainer for me because I really loved the first two games. They're really neat if you like logic puzzles.

Anyway, "beat" in quotes because, although this one has the same amount of handmade puzzles as the previous games, it also has a random puzzle generator. So, that's pretty cool. I'll probably be playing this one on and off for a while.

Fables: The Wolf Among Us

They did a great job bringing this world to life. I hope they do something else with this series. They certainly have a formula at this point so what they need for every title is strong writing and this one was certainly fun and had the Fables charm it needed. It felt a little too obvious how morally grey things were going to end up. Kind of odd how that's something that can been coming now. This is far better than the days when most games were black and white.

I heard that Bill Willingham took the rights back for wolf among us. I don't think there's gonna be a season 2 anytime soon. But at least this means that Bill may be doing something else with the series (a movie and/or game set in the old west days of Fabletown. yes please).

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair.

Finished it late last night. I had often heard that it was significantly better than the original so I was really looking forward to playing it. Now, I kinda feel like that was a massive exaggeration. It's certainly not inferior to the original but I'm still not sure whether I liked it more or the same. I figured letting it sink in overnight might help but I'm still not sure either way. It's clearly superior in a few key areas but it's also kinda worse in others.

Some of the characters didn't seem as interesting or memorable to me. Maybe the original benefits from being my introduction to the game's world but I dunno, it just seems like its cast was more interesting overall. Then there's the class trial minigames. I started typing specifics but it quickly devolved into a long rant that probably would've made no fucking sense whatsoever to anyone that hasn't played the game. So let's leave it at: a couple of them were improved, most of them were either bad additions or existing ones made worse. It doesn't get much more ironic than calling a minigame "The (Improved) ________" only for it to be unarguably worse than the original version.

All that being said, where the game really does shine is, much like the original, the story. The murders were all pretty interesting and the methods and culprits were much less predictable than in the first game. I don't think I was able to guess one outright a single time, I'd usually only figure out the killer's identity at the same time as the characters, at the very end of their deduction. That was a nice improvement compared to the original where halfway through a class trial I'd usually just go "oh, yeah okay, that's what happened" and I'd rarely be wrong.

And then there's Chapter 6. Holy shit, that felt like it came out of fucking nowhere. The original had a pretty cool twist at the end but it felt more organic, a natural conclusion to the game's story. This one has a complete and utter mind fuck instead. Until the very end of Chapter 5 when the game threw all pretense out the window and was pretty blatant about it, I never could've possibly seen this coming. I'm sure there were hints throughout the game but I'd have to replay the whole thing to be sure. But what's important here is that it actually resolved everything in what I thought was a very satisfying manner. So, as someone that loves weird twists, I think the ultimate resolution here was more interesting than in the original.

So yeah, overall the game was at least as good as the original. Possibly better but that will probably depend on your own preferences. Oh and

Thank Fucking God, that fatass wasn't the real Byakuya! I was so fucking bummed out that he was the first to go. When the real one showed up at the end, I was grinning like such a fucking idiot.

Now hurry the fuck up NISA and announce that you're localizing that weird third-person survival-horror shooter spin-off. I need it ASAP. Preferably inside of me.

Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed.

Finished it this afternoon. I was planning on trying to juggle both this and Danganronpa 2 but I ended up getting completely sucked into DR2 so Akiba's was put on hold for a while there. I only went back to finish it this week-end.

To say that this game is weird is putting it mildly. The story isn't garbage or anything like that but it's not very deep or elaborate either. It's also kinda short, my clear save said 10 hours but easily more than half of that time was spent on side-missions. It's very much a "pick up and play" kinda game where the missions are pretty short and you're meant to play it in short bursts whenever you have a few minutes to kill. In that regard, it's kinda weird that they bothered making a PS4 version (although the Vita version does suffer from pretty intense pop-in on the NPCs so it's certainly nice that they did). There's some replay value, though. At one point you get locked into a character path which each lead to their own endings. I'll definitely check those out when I have more time and less games to play.

Anyway, the setting and combat are the two main things the game has going for it. The setting in particular was the best part of the game for me, it just felt so authentic. It was kind of awesome early on to be running around only to stop because "wait, that song's kinda familiar". I'd look around and yep, Disgaea 4 trailer playing on the huge screen across the street. This is going to feel dated fairly quickly (it already did a little bit) but the in-game ads and licensed music were put to great use here. The atmosphere it really great, especially if you're into anime/otaku culture.

Then there's the combat. Overall, it's really fun and incredibly ridiculous to see in action. Unfortunately it's not the most refined gameplay-wise. Your move set lacks any sort of crowd-control ability so, while your attacks can and will hit more than one enemy at a time, you're still just aiming for one and it can get problematic when fighting very large groups. Your attacks can end up not going where you wanted them to and it can get pretty frustrating. Especially when it gives an opening to half a dozen enemies to just start wailing on you and there's little you can do break out of it. It only happened a handful of times throughout the game but it was frustrating enough that I feel it needs to be mentioned.

So yeah, if the game looks like you might enjoy it then you most likely will. What you see is what you get, for better or worse. I don't know if I'd necessarily recommend it at full price but I certainly don't regret my purchase either. It's rough around the edges but there's a lot of fun to be had here.
