Games You've Beat in 2014

Valkyria Chronicles.

Every bit as good as I remembered it to be. The increased resolution really makes the game's visuals shine more than ever before, especially if you downsample. And considering how buttery smooth it runs, downsampling from 4K is very feasible on a shit rig like mine and with only a negligible performance hit. If you like turn-based strategy games, you really need to give this one a shot.

Another thing to note is that VC was one of those PS3 games that never got a trophy patch despite a lot of fans voicing their desire for one. So it's kinda nice to finally have achievements for it, I'm definitely going to try going for 100% completion.

And with that, I'm reminded that I still haven't played VCII. It's been on my Vita ready to go for a while but now I'm thinking maybe I should wait to see if they port that one to PC as well. But in the meantime, DO VANQUISH NEXT, SEGA!

Ass Creed Unity

Man, I've never hated a game so much and also really liked it too. The game performs like ass, but Paris itself is wonderful. I didn't realize how much I was wanting to go back to an Ezio style AC game. The story is... well.. I don't know I kind of lost interest around sequence 5, Ubisoft really need to hire better writers. That said, the Juno/first civilization bullshit was kept to a minimum which I appreciate. The Assassin's Creed Initiates, Assassin's Creed Unity Companion app, Helix credits, uPlay integration, etc was all a little much.

When the game is running fine, it looks great, and then you notice the 2008-style character models, textures popping in and out, and characters just floating down the street.

Co-op though, co-op is the greatest. As long as they keep it optional, I think that'll be the future of AC.

I really, really, hope Ubisoft takes the right lessons from this game and doesn't say fuck it all and make the series into a pirate franchise.

I just finished "Mass Effect: Elevators." The first one. Finally.

Once again the internet falls to it's nostalgia. This game somehow plays worse than KoToR. Im not sure how that's possible, but here we are.

In general, KoToR is the better game. And Mass Effect 2 is definitely the better game too.

I cant quite grasp why anyone would think so highly of this game and it's rpg elements which were "neutered/butchered/removed" in the sequels. The combat is total shit in this game. I wouldnt mind some kind of Telltale Games version of this game where all you do is watch cutscenes and make decisions. Would have been a way better game. Take out the shooting, micromanaging, and mako sections. They were all really bad.

The game also isnt any bigger than the others. The citadel is indeed a huge confusing maze, ill give it that, but the rest of it is shitty mako tracks and indoor corridors. Thats it.

Its obvious that the game wasnt quite ready to be a shooter until ME2. They should have just kept it turn based like KoToR. Oh well.

I also feel like maybe on PC this plays better. I have to press the select button to throw a grenade. Thats fucking lazy. They obviously didnt care about this being easy to play with a controller. Same could be said for every menu in the game. Just cumbersome as hell.

That being said, everything else is fantastic. Dialogue, lore, story(for the most part), voiceacting, music, graphics, etc. Just as good as the sequels, or the first Dragon Age.

Ill just live under the assumption that 360 owners were very deprived of great games in 2007, therefore weak and easily indoctrinated.

I think it's this part.

I don't think you'll find anyone who will claim that the RPG mechanics of 1 didn't have some serious issues, it's just that they went way too far the other way with 2.  IMO 3 strikes a really good balance.

Finished up Folklore over the last few days and it certainly feels like an early generation PS3 game.  I dug the presentation, but the characterizations and narrative felt really...disjointed.  Voice acting was pretty hit or miss too.  Sometimes it was good, other times it was full of slipping accents.

Only 11 games left on my backlog to go!

Shadow Warrior

Quite a fantastic game. It's a modern FPS with an old-school charm of murdering a room full of demons in glorious ways. I will say it is way more satisfying than Space Marines in this aspect since with the sword (and by extension the guns) you can do various moves to aid you in clearing the rooms of enemies. The only downside is that it doesn't have a New-Game+ mode or even cheats so you'll never go around in the early levels as an overpowered badass. Sad... seriously, that is my main gripe with the game. My other gripe is with a certain enemy who appears to be a lot like Halo's flood carrier form. Fuck those rolling and exploding bastards, and fuck their traps too.

There are also some plot related stuff but I think I'll let them slide since the gameplay to me takes center stage.

Edit: I'm an idiot.

Bioshock Infinite: Burial At Sea

Episode 1 was kind of shit except for the ending. Though it was cool to see pre-destruction Rapture.

Episode 2... god damn. Required playing if you care at all about this series stories. I see why Levine and Irrational are done after it.

Side note that isn't really a spoiler but sort of is:

The scene where you see Suchong get killed is amazing. One of my favorite audio clips in Bioshock brought to life and it includes him holding a tapedeck and everything.

Dark Souls II: Crown of the Sunken King.

I was holding off until I could get a good deal on the season pass but then a couple weeks ago I was cleaning up my Humble Bundle account and ended up giving my friend a bunch of my spare Steam keys. He felt the need to get me something in return and this is what he chose.

Anyway, people weren't kidding when they said it was much better than anything in the base game. Not to shit on Dark Souls II or anything, but the level design here was much more interesting. It felt more like the original, a bit more open and with lots of branching paths that loop around on themselves and end up reconnecting with the main path and creating shortcuts and what not. It just makes exploration so much more satisfying and fun. Also, maybe being on NG+++ had something to do with it but my SL 238 character got his ass handed to him so fucking much. That penultimate boss was particularly challenging. It was kind of funny at first, I was clearly rusty and kept dying over and over again. I probably lost somewhere around 200K souls in total.

So yeah, it's a really fun way to spend a few more hours in the game once you've done everything else. Gonna have to grab the other two soon.

I finally tore myself away from Dragon Age long enough to finish Bayonetta 2.  It's probably the best action brawler I've played since Devil May Cry 3.  If you own a Wii U or you anticipate getting a Wii U this Christmas, then this is an absolute must-buy.

Finished Dragon Age:Inquisition's main story quest after 70 odd hours. I enjoyed the story, but I think it relies extremely heavily on the first two games. Because I enjoyed the gameworld lore and have played through DA:O and DA2 several times apiece, I really enjoyed how DA:I tied up some of the loose ends and developed characters from the previous two games. However, I think new players would just find a lot of the main quest kind of odd and offputting near the second half because it ties into DA:O (and, to a lesser extent, DA2) quite heavily.

I already have started a new playthough as a qunari mage. I plan to play this Inquisitor as more of a hard-ass and Chantry faithful.

I did not like the final battle at all. it was way too easy and did not feel like the culmination of all my hours of adventuring. It was almost as bad s DA2's. I really wish the choices you make during DA:I had more of an impact on the final story missions. Conversely, there are a lot of things in DA:I that are significantly different depending on your choices in DA:O.

It's possible that Loghain or Alistair plays a large role in the main quest of DA:I if either of them is still with the gray wardens. Inf act, I think that that particular quest would be particularly redemptive and meaningful if Loghain is still around. If Alistair or Loghain are not part of the Wardens, though, you get a generic Warden in the role. This makes some of the choices regarding that particualr questline less impactful, since the player has not really formed any connection with Stroud.

Hawke comes back and his/her personality is affected by how you played Hawke in DA2; s/he can be snarky, diplomatic, or aggressive. S/he plays a signifiacnt role, too, which is nice if you liked your Hawke.

The god baby plays heavily into a mian quest near the end to such an extent that I do not know how the quest could possibly exist if there is no god baby.

I also wonder how the game would work if Leliana died at the Temple of the Sacred Ashes in DA:O, since she plays a huge role in DA:I as your spymaster.
