Games You've Beat in 2014

Resident Evil: Revelations.

So, this one was kind of a mixed bag. It starts out pretty great. The first few episodes really feel reminiscent of the good old Resident Evil you know and love, the old school ones. Some light exploration and puzzles, not too much shooting and an actually creepy environment. The Queen Zenobia is probably the best setting the series has had since the original mansion and Raccoon City. Early on, I also really appreciated how the game made an obvious effort to tell a proper story. Problem is, before long a few major issues show up.

The enemy variety just isn't there so combat gets really repetitive. There's maybe half a dozen different enemies you'll be fighting for most of the game. It gets old. Then the story starts making you jump from character to character to character and at some point you're just left wondering why you should even give a shit about these guys. I'm kind of a Resident Evil fanboy so it was cool to jump to Chris the first time. But did I really need to play as those other two assholes as well? There's also a bunch of flashback levels that ultimately fail to justify their existence. They just feel like padding.

The biggest problem, though, is that this was clearly designed for a handheld system. I'm sure it was one hell of a 3DS game but the jump to HD isn't flattering to most of the game's assets. They obviously reworked the characters a bit because they look decent (although their movement animations are really floaty), but the environmental stuff looks kind of awful. This might seem like a shallow thing to complain about but it ends up making the whole thing feel kind of underwhelming on a big screen.

Overall, I'd say it was worth the ~10$ I paid for it. Even though it never really managed to suck me in, I still enjoyed my time with it for the most part. And now that it's over, I'm all set for RE4's unlock on Steam tonight! Somehow, I'm actually more excited about a port of a 10 years old game than I am about most upcoming new releases. Except maybe Dark Souls II.

Because it's a great game? Yeah, it's the point where the series took the turn that brought it where it is today (mainly because of how badly the GCN remake bombed) but RE4 still maintained a good balance, I think. I remember quite a few sections being scary or really stressful back when I first played it.

And saying they turned it into an escort quest makes me question whether you even finished it. Ashley isn't with you for large chunks of the game and when she is, I'd argue it's one of the few games that does escort mission right.

RE4 was a travesty.  First they turned a survival horror into an action game, and then they made it a fucking escort quest.  I honestly don't understand why people like it so much.

Action game? Ammo was still on the scarcer side. Definitely a blend of survival horror and action. The horror was still everywhere in the game. As for escort, I'm not as stupid as to think that just because a trope is present, it automatically makes something shit. I had no problems with the way it was handled in RE4. It added tension without me ever thinking "ASHLEY YOU STUPID BITCH WHY DID YOU DO THAT!?"

It's not nice to call people stupid, especially when you insist on reading too much into what they say. I have played games with good escort missions before, this was not one of them. I had no end of trouble with Ashley getting herself killed stupidly.

Then again, when you present a very contrarian opinion and fail to elaborate on it beyond "LOL SO BAD GAIZ, AMIRITE?!" it's kind of hard to take seriously. I just figured it was a weak trolling attempt and didn't bother replying any further.

@FLD:  I haven't played the game for like 9 years, I can't remember it very specifically beyond that I hated it and really general reasons why.  You're kind of right though, in that my second comment was intended in more of a teasing way rather than actually seriously.

*Edit* - @FDS:  And you being an asshole doesn't make you right.  You not having issues proves there must not be any, obviously.

*Edit 2* - And just to be clear, the escort mission thing was the nail in the coffin, not the sole (or even main) reason I didn't like it.

I'm not saying put more effort into it, I'm saying don't go out of your way to be a dick.  In your first post the same point could have been made just as well without calling me stupid, and in the second one it could have been made just as well without the first sentence.

I didn't call you stupid. I made a general statement that you chose to take offense to. :)

Metal Gear Solid 2

I think I prefer Metal Gear Solid 3, but 2 was pretty good as well. But man, I really hate Raiden. Onwards to Metal Gear Solid 4!

How come you're not playing them in order? I guess these aren't your first play throughs?

This is my first playthrough. Someone told me to do it chronologically, which now I realize was probably not great advice. But I have a good sense of what's going on, but I probably would have appreciated parts of MGS3 better if I had played the others first.

I can't remember, it was summer 2012 when I played through MGS3. I want to say it was one of the guys I work with but it could have been someone online. I'm just going to blame Ethan.

Ignoring the story, even just from a gameplay perspective, MGS and MGS2 have not aged well, control wise. It would have been nice to work my way up to a controllable camera and then proper aiming/shooting mechanics from MGS4. Now the question is, do I try to beat Peace Walker before I play Ground Zeroes?!
