CorgiShinobi
Been looking around a bit, but what did ya'll do to prepare upgrading to Windows 10? I haven't bothered yet as I'm not currently using my desktop as of late.
madbassman39
I'm curious to see if anyone was allowed to upgrade yet. I'm waiting for windows to let me know but I'm also impatient. I want to know now! As far as preparing, I"m not upgrading my PC until the end of the free upgrade program cause I just don't feel like dealing with it. My laptop has everything on the cloud so I'm hoping to update as soon as windows lets me.
Eleven
My employer won't let me update my laptop.
deanb
Yeah, I think work PC's will be on Windows 7 for a while. It'll be entirely on IT dept's head to manage that (handily being a small business I am our works IT dept so I'm on Windows 10, and I'm converting the other to Win 10 when she's off tomorrow. Rest are all Macs so they're only like Panther or whatever*) I upgraded through the Insider program so had it for a while. Since Windows...7 at least Windows does the whole "Windows.old" thing so don't even need to do major back-ups (and most of your files should be on a different drive anyway, C:// for OS and programs only). It takes about half an hour (after the download, which time will vary) to do the update, and £"configure your settings" or what not, then you pick your options (Which covers most the stuff above on Wi-Fi sharing, typing corrections n what not which you can disable with a toggle), then however long you want to spend configuring Windows 10 to your taste with Quick Access n the start tiles n what not. Oh and installing new drivers. (and software if you did a fresh install and not in-place upgrade) At some point, if I can get hold of an ISO or whatever, I might do a fresh install. I'd like to at work too but that's a case of finding the time cos there's all the software to install which is a PITA and obviously need to still be doing work while it does its thing. *Nah, Yosemite, I guess I can do El Capitan some point. TheMightyEthan
Uh.. shouldn't your post have said "yes, it shares the login..." instead of No? And are we talking about the third person here? As I understand from the conversation on the previous page, the third person having access is the issue... What I mean is that the 3rd person only has access to your network if they physically come within range of it. All WiFi Sense does is share login info, it doesn't like tunnel access across the internet to everyone on the friends list, so they still have to be within physical range of your WiFi to make use of it. That's why I said "No", because it does not stream to people out of range, it only gives them the ability to access it in the event they come within range in the future. Why I came in here: you don't need to wait for the update rollout to hit your PC, you can manually download it here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

TheMightyEthan
That's the same thing that I linked to, I just linked straight to the MS page.
Mr. GOH!
Backed up my personal data that wasn't already backed up (mostly game saves, as I copy my real documents over to a backup drive once a week), and also making sure that my 3rd party peripherals have W10-compatible drivers. There's not much else I can do, especially with my lappy. My work setup isn't changing anytime soon; I'm running W7 there, now.

Thursday Next
I had an error after downloading and during setup: "setup has failed to initialize the working directory". After some googling moved the downloaded folder to my other hard drive and it started to work. Then installation paused and it told me that I didn't have enough disk space. Cleared space and we're all installed. How the hell are you supposed to divine "Not enough disk space" from "setup has failed to initialize the working directory"?
TheMightyEthan
Mine went flawlessly on my laptop. I have a few niggles, but nothing major. For some reason the email live tile on my start menu isn't doing its live tile thing, and I can't figure out why. Anyone have any suggestions? I tried googling but couldn't find anything. Thursday Next
Mine's all installed now. Feel a tad silly for not checking disk space in advance, but really their error messaging is atrocious.
TheMightyEthan
On my desktop I can't get my multiple monitors to work. I can put the desktop on any 1 monitor, or duplicate it across 2, but I can't extend it across 2. I do have an nVidia card, but I've installed the newest driver that was supposed to fix the multi-monitor issues. Anyone have any ideas? I'm open to the possibility that it's working right and I'm just too dumb to figure out how to do it.
TheMightyEthan
Okay, I figured it out: I have 3 monitors, but my graphics card only supports using up to 2 at the same time. For some reason with all 3 connected it won't let me extend even across 2, but if I unplug one then it will let me extend across the remaining 2. Weird. Not that big a deal though, because the third monitor is just my gaming TV, so I can just leave it unplugged except when I want to use it, which isn't very often. TheMightyEthan
Yes, even when it's not in use, turned completely off, it still prevented me from extending the desktop across the other two monitors.

madbassman39
So i think its been just shy of a week with Windows 10 and so far I love it. I wish my computer was a bit better at being less sucky, but hey thats what a $300 laptop will get you. Things I love: -Cortana (especially 'hey cortana') -the Notification Center (Can we start putting widgets in the like Mac one?) -How much better it runs that Windows 8 / 8.1 -Groove music (keeps my data from my Zune unlimited but I pay for Spotify so I don't use it) -The new start menu -Virtual Desktops Things I'm not too fond of -Edge. Yeah its better than Explorer but it also doesn't have all of the conveniences that I've come to love with Chrome. -Lack of hot corners. I know people hated them in Windows 8/8.1 but I like them on my work Mac, I would love to see them make a return similar to that -For some reason the notification center doesn't pop up the windows I want when I select them for outlook or when I plug my iPhone in. -Hey Cortana stops working once I close my laptop and open it again (this maybe an issue with my computer) Overall, this OS is pretty great. I loved what Apple did with Yosemite, and for Windows this is a step in the right direction and a good competitor with Yosemite. Windows has a little work still ahead of them, but honestly this is pretty freaking amazing, just need some way to text people without using stupid Skype, maybe a way to hack into my imessage on my laptop? TheMightyEthan
How do you use virtual desktops? (I'm sure I could figure it out if I tried, but I haven't tried yet.)
madbassman39
Three finger swipe up / click the three square button next to Cortana and at the bottom right you can add the "virtual desktop". It's just another desktop that will help you with your productivity.
Thursday Next
Aren't all windows desktops virtual?
deanb
@Madbass: Assume that most people are still on KB+M @Ethan: Either click the rectangle-in-rectangle icon next to Cortana, or just Win+tab. In the bottom corner of here is "new desktop". Win-Tab then cycles through. I should get in habit of using it at work. RE Cortana - They've fucked up a bit with it saying it's not in "my region" except if you click through to their explainer it lists UK as a country Cortana is available in. Having search about online the solution to this is you have to set yourself as US region, Us Language settings etc. Sod all that I'll use my fingers to search. .
Mr. GOH!
I fucking HATE the trackpad gestures/swipes because they severely fuck up my experience when playing games like XCOM and Crusader Kings. The fuck of it is that I can't change the settings because my trackpad device control panel is incompatible with W10 and there's no update for it yet, so I can't turn the gestures off. Cortana is just a verbal Bing search tool, so I disabled it because fuck Bing. Edited August 6, 2015 by Mr. GOH!
deanb
Yeah, wondering how long it is until EU catch wind there's no way to change what search engine is uses (in fact on booting I was never offered a choice of browser either, and as Mozilla are taking pains to point out Win10 makes it a wee bit more technical to change your default browser)
