staySICK
something something god tier smash controller something something?I dunno, I hated the gamecube controllers
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, they were terrible controllers. Why you would inflict that on yourself when there are better modern controllers available that will also work?
Mister Jack
Thank God someone else said it. I always hated the GC controllers yet everyone around me kept talking about how great they were. I felt like I was taking crazy pills.
TheMightyEthan
They were only great in comparison to the N64, they were awful in comparison to the Xbox controller (at least the S, the Duke is more arguable) and DS2.
TCP
All the hardcore Smash players love the GCN controller for reasons unknown, but having it physically plugged into the system is also a benefit for them. I, meanwhile, wonder why they don't play a real man's game like PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.
TheMightyEthan
Physically plugging it in was a benefit back in the GCN days because wireless controllers still had a ton of latency, but now it's imperceptible.
TheFlyingGerbil
Wasn't it just people were pleased they could use the gcn controller rather than Wiimotes on brawl which was reasonable to be pleased about. But that has now somehow morphed into thinking gcn controllers are the best option, period.
TheMightyEthan
That makes more sense. And yeah, the GCN controller is better than a Wiimote for Smash Bros.
Strangelove
God, I hate the GCN controller. I can only assume nostalgia has a big part in people wanting to use it for Smash. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the Pro controllers.
CorgiShinobi
GCN controller is alright. The face button layout was better suited for certain games, but practically almost every fighter was awkward unless it was a free-for-all. The triggers are a mixed bag for me. Like the shape, not the feel, though maybe the new ones will have some improvements in parts. Not the best, but it has its place and that's in Smash. The Pro controller is fine, but the pro fighters have been using the GCN for so many years that switching would be like a revolution. Not to mention, Nintendo supporting the GCN controller is like an apology to the pros for Brawl's tripping and other "anti-tournament" mechanics. Faiblesse Des Sens
God, I hate the GCN controller. I can only assume nostalgia has a big part in people wanting to use it for Smash. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the Pro controllers. People already owning them or being able to find them for cheap used is a big part of it. TheMightyEthan
Yeah, I appreciate that they're doing it because I already have 4 GCN controllers and 0 pro controllers.
TCP
Remember how I always bitch about the Virtual Console? Jason Schreier of Kotaku finally caught on that Nintendo needs to drastically overhaul their approach for the Wii U and 3DS VC and posted an article about it that's worth a read. He talks about how long it took to get SMB3 on the Wii U, but what he doesn't seem to be aware of how it was announced to come out in 2013, and didn't get released until a few months ago. Regardless, still worth a read (or just search for my old posts where I said the same things a year ago, only with more punctuation errors and CAPITAL LETTERS).Here's a copy and paste for those not wanting to give them hits: Also on what fucking delusional planet did Nintendo win E3? With Pacman for Smash Bros? Smash Bros getting delayed? Pokemon remakes that they told us about a month ago? The coolest thing there was a CGI trailer for Zelda, that didn't show off any gameplay, reveal the title, or tell us anything other than "here's the art-style no one liked from Skyward Sword... now in open world!". Fuck. Edited June 16, 2014 by The Cowboy Poet
TheMightyEthan
That wasn't Skyward Sword's art style. If anything it was more like Wind Waker but with more detail. It was definitely cel-shaded though.
deanb
I should add while I'm generally opposed to Kotaku, the copying and pasting of their articles I'm definitely not a fan of either.
Mr. GOH!
Nintendo definitely had the best E3 show, but that's only because the other shows were so godawful and failed to have anything new or interesting at all. Nintendo skated by on the Zelda semi-reveal, because of nostalgia. This was one of the least exciting E3's in recent memory. I consistently feel embarrassed for game journos when I read their impressions of it, as if the whole exercise were anything other than a cynical marketing extravaganza. Strangelove
Yeah, Nintendo won basically because of Zelda and Smash Bros. And the other 2 conferences werent great either. To be honest, all it takes to win these conferences is nostalgia. It's pretty much the reason I think Sony won, because I value Grim Fandango and Uncharted way more than Zelda or Smash Bros. But people love those 2 Nintendo franchises to death. And not to take it all away from them, those 2 games looked great. But its not shit I care about. Been there and done that to death. Mr. GOH!
Zelda nostalgia > Grim Fandango nostalgia. This is because people have nostalgia for dumb things.
TheMightyEthan
My Halo nostalgia trumped my Zelda nostalgia, but I freely admit that's stupid.
Mister Jack
Grim Fandango was the most exciting news I heard during that entire E3 conference and nobody on the internet seems to give a shit about it but me. I mean, do people not get how significant that was? The game was pronounced dead and buried in Lucasarts' grave! You can't even get it on GoG!
TCP
FINE, DEAN. I was just trying to make you happy I saw way more new and interesting stuff from Sony and Microsoft's pressers than anything Nintendo had to show. I couldn't care two shits about Smash Bros. Outside of that, just a bunch of side scrolling platformers, which on any other platform would be 15 dollar downloadable games. Mario Maker looks great in theory but I have zero faith in Nintendo's ability to have a competent online infrastructure to support sharing and browsing levels. Zelda looked cool but I'm less excited for the 20th Zelda game than I am for the 4th Uncharted. Plus Sony had No Man's Sky, aka game of the show. Strangelove
I thought Splatoon looked good. Zelda's graphical style and Splatoon itself were probably the best things about the Nintendo conference.
CorgiShinobi
I couldn't care two shits about Smash Bros. This made me physically ill upon reading this blasphemy. I'll break down why Nintendo "won" this E3, even though the whole affair felt more ho-hum than an E3 typically is perceived (excluding those "professional" years in later 2000's). It primarily has to do with how their whole conference wasn't even a conference. It was a non-stop 50 minute prerecorded movie of interesting trailers and game footage. No awkward "Please Applause" moments, no audio goofs, no 15 minute presentations on "concept" pieces, and no technical shortcomings due to the megaton of wireless interference that has plagued every recent E3 conference. The only time I looked away from the whole Nintendo Direct was during Splatoon, the new IP that not many people are caring about because it'll probably be alright (like I predicted). That's really it, though I guess we could nitpick. One thing that bugged me from Sony was the lack of The Last Guardian. A few days before E3 and IGN goes full retard by pronouncing the game officially cancelled. The article is discredited within the hour by a Sony higher-up. Hey, maybe they'll reassure us more than with just a Twitter comment. NOPE. Edited June 17, 2014 by Atomsk88
TCP
I do admire Nintendo showcasing so much gameplay, something I think Microsoft dropped the ball with and Sony did a pretty decent job at. However, my problem was just the games in general. Smash Bros we already knew about and I'm starting to get fatigued with all the trailers and announcements, the same way I was sick of hearing about Watch Dogs before it was released. The Zelda reveal was huge, but again, no game play. And beyond that, their games weren't just that interesting, or they were vague teases like Star Fox... who knows when the fuck we'll actually see Star Fox? They also didn't do a great job explaining what the NFC figures do. You can criticize Sony all you want about TLG but where the fuck is Metroid? Ever since Other M Nintendo's been saying they have plans for Metroid, but nothing ever materializes. BUT, the reason I'm posting here isn't to continue debating with the charming Atomsk88. I picked up Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze recently. I can't believe, for a game that was literally their biggest first party game for the first part of the year (until MK8) the fucking gamepad screen shuts off when you're playing it. When they're struggling to show why this gimmick is important, I can't believe they weren't ripped apart for that.
Strangelove
Well, at least it shuts off. I wish I could shut it off for most of the games ive played on it.
