May be in the 3rd or 4th story mission. The story becomes a little vapid quite quickly, despite some nice highlights. Worth not paying too much attention to.

 

It's surprisingly great how well they tie it into the Middle Earth canon. I never read Silmarillion but know a little about it, so im in a nice place between 'cool i knew that' and 'holy shit he's THAT guy!' Same with the gf. She's read the Silmarillion and it's her favourite one, so is totally loving ShoM.

 

Some of the collectibles are great too. The two Wizards who've seen too much and dealt with too many adventures and finish each other's sentences- Middle Earth buddy cop movie anyone?

It would be great to play a dwarf. I wish they had more of a presence in this.

 

I'm liking whatsisname in the later missions. The Scottish accent is like 70% there too, probably the best I've seen in a game. Maybe one or two words per sentence he screws up.

Yeah I think there's high potential with Moria. Those giant chambers with pillars stretching hundreds of feet upwards, verticality going from valley crevasses to mountain peaks... Could be greatiest. Would make more sense for a game full of orcs, too. Like, full of em. Every bloody inch.

 

It would be cool if there was a bit where you could fall into a hole in the ground then like fall through the entire planet and come out the other end all white and shit

Not really, there's some trophies that are a little fiddly, one of them I resorted to save scumming (with a USB stick since it autosaves), but all of them are just a matter of doing them. Took me 31 hours total.

 

*Edit - A good portion of them will just happen naturally during play, and most of the rest encourage you to use the various powers rather than just sticking to one method, so overall I'd say they're week-designed trophies.

Sneaking's easy once you get the hang of it. I especially love that you don't have to worry about them finding corpses: if they do they'll look around a little and then go "screw it, who cares?" and go back to whatever they were doing.

Makes sense; the orc's greatest natural enemy is other orcs, after all, so a bunch of corpses in the middle of the stronghold is a regular occurrence. It's even supported by the Lord of Rings when the orcs at Cirith Ungol essentially wiped themselves out fighting over Frodo's mithril chain shirt.

Speaking of which... Today I actually non-lethally shot an Uruk in the face; however, I didn't notice that he was in a middle of a yelling match with lesser orcs. Guess what the lesser orcs did when they saw him stumble? Hint: It sure wasn't looking for who shot the Uruk in the face.

I think Shadow of Mordor may be one of the first true, legit, genuine, full-blown sandbox videogames ever made. The "this is it" moment, the first proper realisation of open world and sandbox gameplay.

 

It's felt for years like GTA, and most every other "sandbox" game has been getting more and more stale, because, frankly, it's not really a sandbox. Maybe once every 10-20 minutes a dynamic, random event will happen and even then it's over in an instant. You can spend ages running around waiting for cool random things to happen and they won't. Same goes for almost every sandbox game I've ever played. When you want stuff to happen, it doesn't. Even with really nice sandboxes like Far Cry 3.

 

But in Mordor... It's like they've crafted fifteen different mechanics which are almost constantly emergent and interacting. They plop warring factions or little random events every hundred yards, so there's always something going on in the near distance. You can literally lose hours of your life just getting in constant scuffles and trying little strategies out with monsters and stuff. GTA would match this if they made police chases almost constant, added gang factions ala Saints Row and RPG systems to incentivise interaction with them.

 

Basically, Mordor is showing every other sandbox game how it should be done. It's a masterpiece of sandbox design- although like every other open world game, it does hit terminal velocity after a bunch of hours and is left deflated and a little meaningless. Especially when you're so OP like by the end of Mordor.

If anything pisses me off it is the last chances. Motherfucker I pressed the button on time.

 

It annoys me that it's a different button every time. It should be Triangle. Triangle is the parry button. Triangle. Every. Time.

 

Same goes for mounting caribou. That shit should be Circle. Circle is the drain/brand button. Circle. Every. Time.

 

I'll let it slide for Graugs since you're doing a mix of stabbing and parrying and draining/branding (especially now that I have shadow mount).
