The tank mission seems like a crazy difficulty spike at first but once you figure out what you need to do (and that you can save mid-mission), it's really not that bad. It's a shame because it seems to have caused a ton of people to have dropped the game and it's really just getting started at that point. :(

Seriously people, save scum the shit out of that mission and play the rest of this fantastic game!

I have a notebook with notes I took when playing, including the strategy and units I used for that mission. :P It was pretty though specially because lancers can miss a mountain at point-blank range. :P It was pretty fucking awesome when I finally managed to clear it though. :P

Edit: Found the notebook, turns out this is all I have from that chapter, so... I have no idea how I managed to actually clear it, weird since I have a ton of stuff for the other missions. :P  Apologies for the awful handwriting. :P

I recall that I used sacrificial troops to draw fire and yes, I lost someone during this mission. Only time I did.

I'm sorry unknown soldier. The years have stripped your name from my mind but I still remember you.

No. People have to suffer through the horror of war and being a commander. I'm so sorry.

I think I'm going to do a replay VC1 with a fan rebalance patch. I think I'll know the true horror of war with that because scout rushing was so overpowered. Then I'll probably play VC3 with the fan translation and emulator. Not sure if I want to play VC2. I kind of had my fill of school life with Cold Steel 1.

edit: @MetalCaveman That sniper got to be Marina.

I would assume the fan patch goes the opposite direction because the game is pretty broken to begin with. As soon as you have high enough level scouts, all challenge disappears because you can just goal rush in a turn or two. When the PC version first came out, there was a bug that caused you to take way more damage due to the bump to 60fps and some people didn't want it to be patched because it actually made the game feel more balanced lol.

I got near the ending of VC2, but I got pulled away as I wasn't as invested as I was with VC1. Since it was a portable title, the maps are much smaller and so you're always dealing with close quarter engagements and funneling.

I'll give VC4 a chance, but I don't think any other game in the series will ever come close to the impact and excellence of the first game.

And true soldiers get through the tank mission without any fancy PC changes. Back in my day, you got through it by the skin of your teeth and no mid-save state!

It's been a while since I played.  Are all the objectives just to reach a certain location?

Like Metal said, a lot of them are. Reach the outpost, kill the 2-3 enemies in it and capture. And even the ones that aren't, having scouts that can just run across the entire map in a single turn is still pretty useful in getting A ranks. I fired up the original last night to finally get started on that NG+ run and I already made it past the infamous tank mission, which is like 7 chapters in.

You technically know more, you just have a billion more questions. Questions like "what in the fucking name of hell?" and "how many drugs is Kojima on?".

I really hope that FROM thing isn't another Sony exclusive. Ideally a multiplatform Souls-like in a completely new setting.

I die a little bit more inside when I get reminded that there are fast zombies in World War Z adaptations. And a bit more when the zombies are not stopped by cold or desert conditions.

Couldn't agree more. World War Z was about trying to stop a glacier, not outrun a flood. The point was that running from them is easy until you end up with no place left to run to. It's a completely different type of scary.

“World War Z is a name synonymous with heart-pounding fear and action, and we’re excited to finally capture that energy in a fast-paced and gruesome experience crafted specifically for modern consoles and PC,” said Saber Interactive CEO illiterate numbskull Matt Karch in a statement.

It's that time of year again! TL;DW

One that caught my eye is Wing of Darkness.

Basically a mashup of say Zone of the Ender and Ace Combat. There's a gameplay video out in the wild that shows off the combat in a way better light (Imagine being Char from Gundam). It has potential to be a pretty good game. During C93, a demo will go on sale for like a buck. If it does well, maybe we'll have a neat Japanese indie game next winter (or it could be in development hell for years...).
