Octopath is gorgeous, and I actually really liked the demo, but in the full game the way you collected characters, with each quest feeling like the first act of its own game, really dragged after about the third one. Other than that I really liked it, and I really really dig tactical RPGs, so hopefully this will be more up my alley. Agree. I think almost every game could benefit from being pared down a bit. There's so much filler because you have to have "a sprawling open world" and "over 120 hours of content" when a lot of games would be much better for being "only" 10 hours long and having a world that actually had interesting stuff in it and a quick way to get there.
TheFlyingGerbil
Anyone played the demo?
TheMightyEthan
I downloaded it, but it's hard to muster enthusiasm for a demo of a game that's not coming out until next year.
TheMightyEthan
I was on the fence about Rift Apart, I liked R&C 2016 okay but wasn't super in love with it, but goddamn this looks fun, I think I'm gonna get it.
Mister Jack
I actually consider R&C 2016 to be one of the weakest entries in the series and I didn't even dislike it.
Mister Jack
I played the original just in time, it looks like.
toxicitizen
Fuck, that looks good. Why have I not played the original yet? Oh right....

toxicitizen
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA That looks Souls as fuck and it's beautiful. I kept hearing things suggesting it had a troubled development and was still years away so it's pretty fucking awesome to see it's only six months away! edit: Goddamnit, @MetalCaveman!!! Mister Jack
I'm ready to take down some Spongebob scrubs with Garfield's lasagna pan smash attack.
Mal
Dad of the year. This is a sequel to another game so might have some issues but we'll see? Looks pretty but I wonder how janky it'll be. So far the animation looks totally great. Story/theme seems like a straight Chinese fantasy which can be good (new set of tropes for everyone to learn) and bad (low-key to overt sexism). I look forward to it since there probably will be an English dub too but... lol It's like we're back 10-20 years ago era of JPN-EN dubbing lol Like it's horrible dub but it's like I'm reliving my childhood. Xuan Yuan Sword 7 allow me to relive janky action gameplay and this game lets me relive the dubbing.
TheMightyEthan
The dub may be bad, but the game is gorgeous.
Mal
Oh yeah, I'm so looking forward to running on top of a bamboo forest. While doing flips and shit. Lol Also, if the dub is bad... As an aside, I realized what the dub voice reminds me of: I'm here to kill Chaos.

My forays into Chinese/Taiwanese games hasn't turn up much. If anything they are still learning except for some of the bigger companies like MiHoYo with Genshin Impact. I really want to see the devs from MHY work on a single player game but that's a pipedream since they probably want to hold onto their (hopefully) good jobs. inb4 MHY has their own Activition/Blizzard moment
Thursday Next
tbf, the running up a bamboo thing is sort of new. I don't think I've seen that sort of horizontal to vertical traversal in a game before. Reminiscent of how Spider-Man runs up a building, but applied in a natural setting. It could make open world games like Tsushima feel more three-dimensional. Or, in a game set between warriors and assassins you could choose between using that verticality as an assassin, or cutting down the bamboo thickets to deny enemies that terrain for a "fair" fight. Mal
Forget the snow. That dragon fight. Its attacks are telegraphed really well without breaking its physical form to do so. Also I don't think I have ever fought an Asian dragon before in a 3D game. Lastly, the song at the end with the lyrics is a version of the 1986 show's OP theme, just now sounding a whole lot like Kenji Kawai. Thursday Next
You can fight a divine dragon in Sekiro, but it's a more of a... puzzle fight I guess..? I recognised the protag (and the growing stick weapon) from the TV show Monkey (maybe "Monkey Magic" in the US?) looks interesting.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, it's the monkey king from Journey to the West, although I think this game is based on a different story about him.
Mal
That's some serious inspirations. Now to wonder if there will be commentary on class and the haves and the have-nots. Add in religion and oh my. Young me saw the critique on religion but it took an older me to see the commentary on class and even older still to appreciate it. It's still up in the air if this is based on part of the story or some modern sequel/take. There has been many modern takes/sequels and some are just down right awful. Remains to be seen if this one will be.
