Olympics in Sochi 2014

So, the Winter Olympics are kicking off very quickly here.  No one I have met is very high on the Olympics this year because of the terrible press (deservedly so) that the Sochi village and the Russian government are getting.

1.  Sochi does not have the infrastructure to support the Olympics.  Almost everything had to be built from scratch.  EVERYTHING.

2.  Everything they built from scratch is pretty crappy.  Toilets don't work.  Door knobs not able to be used, but are still put on.  Shortages on supplies.  Unfinished rooms/buildings/sidewalks/streets.

3.  Security is crazy and so are the terrorists.  The people there should be afraid because of both sides of the law, as Putin uses vague laws to put away anyone who dares stand up to him.

4.  Shaun White is one of 3 people hurt while practicing on a poorly constructed slopestyle course.  Shaun's injury is the least of injuries, which saw one person carried out on a stretcher already.  White has since dropped out of that competition to keep his health for the other events he is to attend.

I'm curious how this will play out.  If anything, I hope no one gets hurt any further and things are okay in the end for a fun time for everyone.

I'm not familiar with the Olympics that much...but what is happening in Sochi common? Or at least happened before? A rushed, poor job at building up a city...or "not-so-great living conditions" ?

Supposedly, the water that is being run in some of the hotels isn't potable. Supposedly has sewage problems.

Really, really looks bad on Russia.

If Russia wanted to let the world know how they are a successful modern country, they are not making a god job of it - so far it is basically confirming everything bad thing most people rightly or wrongly assume about the place. Often these issues seem to be forgotten once there is actual sport to talk about, but we shall see.

I think TCP might be referring to marriage being okay now for gays in Scottland, and Russia having a bunch of anti-gay laws?

@Vecha:  Well, some toilets won't flush and some have the seats screwed on incorrectly, to where the sitting part is where the lid should be and the lid covers the hole for the poo.  Also, toilets are seated side-by-side with no walls between, meaning you can sit a foot between people and have conversations while you shit.  It's like one big glory hole without the anonimity. Imagine the lovely smell of your neighbor having mud butt.  Or a drunk guy walking in and not being able to aim straight while your reading the latest issue of "Putin Weekly", which has a really good article on how to get the borscht stain out of your tie using potatoes.

I'd like to hear CyberRat's take on this, though, from the domestic perspective.  I've only heard foreign journalists so far.

I can never get excited for any Olympics. Great athletes and all, but I have little desire to watch any of it. The Winter Olympics is even more boring than the summer Olympics.

But the Sochi shitshow is fantastic to watch! The Russian kleptocracy's general corruption and resultant massive incompetence is a sight to behold.

Were there complaints about the hotels being complete shitholes in China?

As far as the stuff with gay people goes, I doubt there will be any problems.  Olympic athletes tend to have a sort of unofficial, quasi-diplomatic immunity.

Russian officials respond to the complaints.

My favorite part:

Dmitry Kozak, the deputy prime minister responsible for the Olympic preparations, reflected the view held among many Russian officials that some Western visitors are deliberately trying to sabotage Sochi's big debut out of bias against Russia. "We have surveillance video from the hotels that shows people turn on the shower, direct the nozzle at the wall and then leave the room for the whole day," he said.  An aide then pulled a reporter away before Mr. Kozak could be questioned further on surveillance in hotel rooms.

You're making too many generalizations here. You're assuming straight people don't have anal sex. You're assuming that all gay people are men who like to stick their penises in other men. You're assuming that straight people, even without anal sex, haven't ever explored that cavity. Don't be afraid of the anus. Things get a lot hotter once you're over it.

RT has been pretty funny over the past few days (the interview with the mayor or Sochi this morning was super awkward), but it often turns to sadness after the initial chuckles. It really sucks that they're so helplessly crippled by corruption over there. You would think that they could at least create a believable facade in Sochi, what with all the preparation time and the insane amount of money (WAY over budget, I might add) that went into constructing it. Instead of sate-of-the art facilities and accommodations, they're wowing the world with colossal failures of even the most basic kind (safe/running water, electricity, rooms without sheetrock laying around, etc.). I don't think anyone saw the dog issue coming... And all this on top of the gay "propaganda" laws, and those Occupy Pedophilia cretins gaining more and more steam... It's kind of tragic.

Speaking of, I was here yesterday. A professor invited us, and I decided to show up, and wound up staying & handing out flyers. I would have felt like a bit of a phony marching (since I was invited almost as a voluntary assignment), but was happy I could help in some small way. I do feel that it's important to highlight the active role that government has taken in provoking the sort of sentiment that is leading to unchecked violence against homosexuals over there. Also, since seeing How To Survive a Plague on Netflix some months back, I've had a newfound respect for the meaningful change that (not exclusively, but largely) the homosexual community was able to achieve through protest right under my young, unsuspecting nose. Whether it's letting them die in emergency rooms, failing to prosecute people for violence against them, or creating laws that aim to affiliate homosexuality with pedophilia and other rape, it seems that modern man has a bad habit for abusing LGBT people, and they don't think twice about it until someone points a bright light on them and holds it there.

Except I haven't made any of those assumptions, and I even added in the "though not for everyone" bit cos I know you'd be a stickler for pointing out not all gay men like anal sex.

You are trying too hard.

Not all gay men are the ones who are putting things in assholes. The whole top and bottom thing should be pretty common terminology at this point.
