Alien: Isolation

That's really, really early in the game. As I've said before, the first 3-4 hours are very weak tbh. You're still in that phase. As IDD found out, by the time you hit hour 7 onwards, it becomes incredible

The game itself seems pretty good, I'm just struggling to get past the way the game punishes you for a mistake. I'm not sure that's a time thing more than it is a basic game compatibility thing; maybe It's a problem on my end. I'll take another look at it when I've got some downtime, I really want to love this game.

Well, it's a game that requires a bit of patience, but I can totally understand why sequences like this can be a bitch to get through. Luckily they are few and far between. Actually, I don't know if I encountered any more of these after the one you've mentioned.

Also, save. Save often. Doing this can get you very far, even if you have to take a little detour every now and then. It's sure as shit better than repeating another 40 minute segment of the game.

Well, it's a resource you have to manage as in there are only certain, often dangerous places you can do it. Yes, limited in quantity, not usability. The fact that enemies often roam the areas where a save point is adds a lot of strategy and beautiful tension.

Personally, I'm a fan of the ink ribbon thing (it's just a game mechanic – embrace it, play carefully and it becomes fun to engage with) but I can totally appreciate why people wouldn't like that.

What like an ink ribbon thing? Because I don't like the sound of that.

Not exactly. You don't have to lug some shit around to save your game, but when you do it, the save point is locked out for a couple of minutes or so. Not sure how long it takes because I never stuck around to check, but it's a nice touch that prevents save scumming and forces you to sort of plan your steps ahead.

And that kind of thing is fine.  I just hate it if I play for a while and then have to unexpectedly quit for some reason, and then have to decide whether to use one of my limited number of saves or lose my progress.

I think I'm going to tap out of this one. Not sure how far into the game I am (something like two or three chapters after the flashback segment) but just thinking about starting it up again makes me nervous.

Funny, for all those horror games I've played over the years, it's the good old Xenomorph that finally made me feel like a big vagina.

Just started playing in earnest, maybe 3 hours in? Lots of scripted stuff, too, I think. I mean, I've only encountered the alien twice,

and one of the times it was only a cut scene.

Does the alien actually exist as an entity outside of scripted sequences in that second encounter stage when you hide behind the desk in a scripted sequence (the first encounter being when Axel got run through by the alien)?

I just got past the first basic encounter in which you sneak past two Working Joes, fwiw.

I think the game shows promise. I'm still being introduced regularly to new tools and systems, so I'm sure I'm in the extended 5-8 hours tutorial sequence. I love the atmosphere and the tension. That almost every in-game action taken by the main character, from saving, to removing industrial locks from doorways, to rerouting power, does not pause the game really heightens the tension. And everything you do in the game feels at home in the Alien film universe. It's pretty nifty.

Yes, it takes a little while but eventually he will start to hound you on regular basis in completely non-scripted way. Once he's set up as a main threat in the game he will simply wander around the levels, moving through vents, occasionally dropping in if you'll draw too much attention (mostly running around making noise). Incidentally, first bit of advice - be quiet at all times and avoid any physical confrontation with anything. You won't regret it later in the game when the real shit goes down and resources are vital to your survival.

As for me, I've put on a diaper and got through most of the game after all.

Now when I have the flamer and Alien is on it's jolly way towards the gas giant, things are looking up. Though I have one minor gripe with the game - the way Samuels is revealed to be an android is rather uncanny. Some guy just drops it in the middle of a conversation and Ripley's like: "duh, I guess?" I know there were some clues hinting on this right from the beginning but still, that's a pretty casual way of revealing an important character trait. Imagine if Bishop was never set up to be an android at the beggining of Aliens. On the other hand, it's really just a cliche by now, since almost every Alien related movie or video game had this "shocking" reveal that some random character was actually a robot, so maybe they wanted to do a little twist on the formula by not making a big deal about it.
