Firefly Online

Decided it was about time this had its own thread.

When I first heard about the game I dismissed it, thinking it would be some simple mobile game where you're transporting things about and buying upgrades with in-game transactions. Turns out I was wrong. Nor is it a traditional MMO.

It's a 'premium' RPG where you're a captain running a crew and doing jobs. You can buy all sorts of ships that can be customised, find various NPCs with their own personalities, upgrade weapons, etc. There is a full 3D flight option (or Mass Effect-style galaxy-hopping if you prefer) and combat works in a turn-based X-COM style. However you choose to play, you can balance allegiances between factions, from Browncoats to Blue Sun to Badger. You start as a Browncoat but can become a full-blown Alliance lackey, if you wish.

It's coming to PC, Mac, Android and iOS, with your account being persistent across platforms. Still probably best to do your flying and fighting on PC, and leave the little things for your phone though.

As for the social part, the site says this:

PLEASE DON’T TELL ME THIS IS ONE OF THEM “SOCIAL” GAMES?

Firefly Online is a single player game, supported by social features that give you the opportunity to connect with friends and fellow Firefly Online users in new and unique ways. Got a shiny new Callahan rifle that you don’t need? Send it to your friend as a gift. Ship broken down and drifting? Send out a distress call and one of your fellow Browncoats might just tow you to safety. Have an idea for a Firefly story you’re just itching to share? Create a job using your story as a basis and publish it on the Cortex for others in the Verse to enjoy!

For those of you who get a chill whenever you see the word “social”, we’re right there with you. We’re only interested in features that truly enhance the player experience. We’ll be revealing more on exactly what we mean in the months to come.

If you want a general overview, then io9 wrote an article a while back that also mixes in the other screenshots that had been released at that time. Shows off all the different ships and NPCs, how customisation works.

I've gathered some other bits and pieces as well, if you want to know more. It's clear the team loves the property (Quantum Mechanix make all the merch, and their first ever project was the Serenity schematic) and has a keen eye for detail and ability to build on the universe.

Combat

Autonomous NPCs

NPC diversity

On the persistent play across platforms

Reputation

Bigger ships and ship classification

A little on weapons and classification

A video of some flying (there are rumours they're looking into Oculus Rift implementation after trying out stuff with the EVE Online folks)

As you can probably tell, I'm pretty excited. And it's due this summer. :)

Heh, the other day I was just thinking about seeing if they'd answer some emailed questions for PXOD, and now this appears:

http://www.vg247.com/2014/03/19/firefly-online-find-a-crew-find-a-job-keep-flying/

You’d spend your time flying around and finding hostile forces on planets, defeating them, then looting them for their weapons; whatever they were using to fight you will fall out of their hands

'Real loot'. Yay.

But that’s just one way to play, of many; what Gore wanted to emphasise, I think, is that there’s no “big bad hero’s path where you kiss everyone off”. What there is is a path where you never have to fire a gun.

But...but this is a vidjagame!

Well, I believe QMx made the map in the first place and Gale Force Nine based things off of that. So, yeah, it's pretty cool.

And apparently there is some 'big news' on the way. So either some proper gameplay or something about an open beta.

I've reached that stage where this is my Windows logon/logoff sound. :P

Nah man, that's not as good as the TV show's theme.

*Edit* - I'm an idiot, the ending credits theme basically is the opening theme but without lyrics:

Now just to find a version of that with higher quality sound.

I need to add in some proper updates from the past few months. In short, this game has diversity out the wingwang (or gender-neutral wingammies)! Fat, thin, old, young, different races, whatever. You can play it, and the NPCs will be generated randomly as such.

The other big thing is that the first 'bit' of the game is online with the Unity3D login stuff for the Cortex.

Okay, so I know you're all heartbroken over news that the game has been delayed until next year.

Fortunately, it's because THE WHOLE CAST has recorded V/O parts for it, and the devs are really expanding on the story, too. Some of the actors have been praising the writing, which is a good sign. Plus, they've got Niska and, hopefully, other 'regulars' returning, too.

Might be that I'm the only one who checks this thread... besides Ethan, but there has been progress/news.

First of all, there's an app for that. Okay, it's also on Steam, too BUT WHATEVER. Not much to it for now, but you get a bunch of cast interviews and things, and you can pay a little to get access to all the features and unlock some stuff for the actual game when it releases.

Secondly, Wil Wheaton will be voicing the male captain you control (booooo) while Courtenay Taylor, aka. Subject Zero/Jack, Scarlet Lake, Juhani and hundreds of other characters, will be voicing the female captain (WOO!)

It sounds like the release might be slipping a little later, but I'd rather they take the time to get it right rather than rush it. They are adding a bunch of cool stuff, it sounds like.

Should get more details after SDCC too.

In the meantime, a little more on:

Crew loyalty & combat skills

Crew talents
