Civilization Beyond Earth

Only reason I think it's too soon for XCOM 2 is I want them to rebuild it from the ground up. Game was great but it seriously lacked the depth and replay value of the original. If a sequel doesn't address that I'm going to be massively disappointed.

As for Civ V, I never bothered to look for an official source but I've heard more than once that it's done and that BNW was the last expansion. And with this new announcement, I'm inclined to think it was true. I don't think they'd have two major Civ games out with active development and ongoing support. I still need to buy BNW, though. Might be a good idea to grab it for the summer, now that I think about it. Then again, I was planning on trying Endless Space first. That one's already on the backlog... Shit man, who has time for all these 4X games?!

Yeah but they're all so time consuming! Most feel like you need to sink at least 50 hours (if not more) into them to really get everything out of the experience. And the good ones make it easy to lose twice that amount of time to them. So with more than one you might as well give up on playing anything else for the foreseeable future.

Steam says you have about a hundred more than that. I only have about 125 but that's actually a lot for me to have on a single game. My only other games with comparable playtimes are XCOM and Diablo III. And by now Reaper of Souls must've caused Diablo III to take the lead.

PC Gamer have done an interview with lead designers.

All quite interesting stuff, not quite just "Civ in space" that's for sure. Does seem to be unashamedly following the Alpha Centauri heritage quite closely too. I quite like the sound of the technology web, always felt it kind of sucked that regardless of playstyle, with Civ you always followed much the same tech route just which you went on first really. Was nice with Endless Space to have a four pronged tech tree that could benefit certain play styles (though there was some overlap)

Some more gameplay stuff. Less interviewing here (none in fact). While the engine is clearly that of Civ V, I quite like the quests, and seems there's a bit more resource hunting (Though it might just be for early game and be like Ruins from Civ V). Also much better tech tree for once!

I really didn't like Civ V. As a massive Civ IV fan I felt they simplified too much, put far too much emphasis on warfare and by changing the governmental system to a World Of Warcraft style talent tree they not only removed much of the customisation but they rather offensively ranked political systems and schools of political thought. You should never level up a communist police state into a democratic republic, one is not the precursor state to the other; they are both diametrically opposed forms of government. I felt patronised and all round disappointed with Civ V... heres hoping for less "streamlining for a wider audience" in Beyond Earth because I don't need my strategy games dumbed down for the FPS-tards.

They didn't rank them that way...  What are you talking about?

Here they are when the game launched:

As you can see, Freedom unlocks in the Renaissance era, Order and Autocracy unlock in the Industrial era, so Freedom is actually available first.  Also, you don't "upgrade" from on to the other, they each have different strengths and weaknesses, and you can only have one of those three active at any given time.  They're portrayed as being mutually exclusive options for government, not as any one being an upgrade of the others.

Then, with Brave New World they changed it so that they all three unlock at the beginning of the Modern Era (or when you build 3 factories, whichever is first) and the choice is permanent.

As someone who's loved the shit out of Civ since Civ II, I think Civ V is the best yet (V > IV > II > III).  Especially after Brave New World.

I am really looking forward to Beyond Earth though, some of the changes they're making with the quests and whatnot sound interesting.

Of all the things to criticize about Civ V, it's puzzling you chose the social policy system. It's far and away better than any previous Civ game's system of picking governments.

I am WAY HYPED for Beyond Earth. I loved Alpha Centauri, and it looks like we're getting the spiritual successor in Beyond Earth. Glad it's not all about fungus this time, too.

I didn't enjoy CIV V more than CIV IV for a few little reasons, but the political system was not one of them. And many of the issues I didn't like were pretty much fixed with the expansions as noted by Ethan. Though...I still rank CIV IV higher...mostly for nostalgic reasoning.

However, I did not ever feel that CIV V was dumbed down for FPS-Tards. I know some "FPS-Tards" and I'm pretty sure CIV V is still a bit more complex than COD.

As an FPS tard, I've only had Civ V, my first foray into the franchise was actually Gal Civ 2 (I know different developer) and that got me into Civ V. I suck at all Civ games I've played, but I sure do like them!

A real FPS-Tard wouldn't even give two shits about playing anything but the following: His favorite FPS Series(which can change generationally) and its sequels.

The flavor posts on the civ leaders on the official website really, really remind me of Alpha Centauri. They're different people and factions, but I am really digging how the culture of each civ is developed and how it may play into the three different upgrade paths/affinities for living on an exoplanet. This is not just a good thing, it is the best possible thing.
