Normally when I play an online game I'm the worst person in the lobby. That's just something I've become accustomed to. I am crap at competitive video games and I never put in the time to become a master like some people do with their particular online favorites. But yesterday I was playing Mario Kart 7 online and I was kicking ass! I got first place in four or five races in a row. When you can do that in Mario Kart, rubber banding blue shell chucking Mario Kart, you KNOW you're good. I got hit by two blue shells in one race and STILL won. It was a heady feeling, going online and being "that guy". And I wasn't even playing like a scumbag! I don't even know where the shortcuts in this game are, I never even finished the single player content. I was just focusing on staying in the middle of the road and dodging obstacles. But I was still kicking ass! And then I realized "Oh. I'm a 22 year old man going online and beating little kids in Mario Kart." Namely because Mario Kart 8 has been out, and while I know only a few of us are playing it, thought it deserved a bit of attention. It tries a few things differently, like the method for unlocking characters and vehicle parts. The only character that is consistently unlocked in order is your Mii character slot. It'll always be the 8th unlocked character, but otherwise you'll be unlocking the rest at random, so it wasn't until Rosalina was part of my last three that I finally unlocked her along with the rest of the Koopa Kids. If you want to know more about character stats and the hidden stats for each weight class and vehicle part, I'd refer you to the Mario Wiki page for Mario Kart 8. The Highlight Reel stuff is good enough, though you're not going to be able to edit it extensively like a video editor. You get to focus on up to four players, what type of focus you want like "Everything," "Big Hits," and so forth. Then the duration and the option to upload to YouTube. Just selecting to share the Highlight to MiiVerse, as far as I've seen, only shares a single image. Otherwise, Online is a blast and you'll have a lot more memorable moments with real players. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of choice, but who really wants to play as Baby Mario? Give me Link, Samus, Kirby and Pikachu already. Me and the GF played some online the other day; she's not a gamer at all (aside from the occasional iOS game) and so struggled a little. She couldn't get her head around drifting/bouncing over jumps, and this cost her a little time on corners. That aside she did okay. I'm a little disapointed that we didn't keep the Wii's co-op online play. I really enjoyed driving around whilst she threw shells at people. They seem like reasonable things to add on as they're not part of the core game and it would explain why the battle mode took a step backward over the previous games. I'll be buying it after the Nintendo digital presentation - I can't wait! I've decided to bite the bullet and buy the digital version even though it's dearer than the disc as I often only want to play one cup or so before playing a different game and if I had to swap discs I know I would just end up not playing it at all. I'd recommend waiting for a price drop, but we both know that's not likely to happen any time soon. I guess you may as well take advantage of their free game. Plus it means I'll have wind waker HD which I wanted but was annoyed by the price of that so getting it free is pretty sweet. TheFlyingGerbil Posted June 14, 2014 Report Share Posted June 14, 2014 I jumped the track in one of the rainbow road courses yesterday but it wasn't the shortcut mentioned above. No idea if I actually went ahead or back though so not necessarily useful but definitely possible! I forgot how frustrating Mario kart can be. Thought people had said blue shells were less of an issue this time but that doesn't seem the case to me. Eg.I finally got one of the speaker power ups drove 1.5 laps with it in first place started thinking I was about to win when I got hit by lightning which knocks the power up out of your hand and then immediately got hit by a blue shell. I was never a big Mario Kart fan, always enjoyed Diddy Kong Racing the most but have not really gotten into kart racers very much. I had the Wii one and the GCN one but eh, they were not that exciting for me. I liked the DS one alright. But wow, the way the karts feel, the online play, the gliders, everything is done really well. It looks great and runs smoothly. I didn't really expect to have it be my favorite game out of the gate. I picked up Wind Waker (for freeeee!), Arkham City, Mario & Luigi U (included) and Assassin's Creed III. MK8 is far and away the best of the lot. Toon zelda would be cool. you could have a deku leaf as a sail and if they could make the kart look like the the king of red lions boat I would flip. They could make a toon epona that handled like a motorbike. If they added new tracks based on hyrule locations and heavy character gorons and light lake hylia fish people etc that would add up to a decent dlc pack i would be happy to pay for. with them adding the mercedes car (which to me looks completely out of place) I can't think what direction they're headed though. i would download it a try î once but certainly but certainly wouldn't part with any cash for it. edit- holy heck. i cannot type on this tablet, sorry! I would love to see some other Nintendo characters, though I'd think Epona would have to be like the Yoshi Bike. Seeing a horse drifting and sparking might be a little too ridiculously entertaining. As for third party, Pac-Man was technically in the arcade game. I'd be doubtful if Sonic could be in Mario Kart when he and all of Sega have a pretty neat kart racing game. It was 12 races but was open for 2 hours. I kind of wish you could re-enter it. There was plenty of time to do another batch of 12 tracks and many people would have been happy to. Not sure if that's a mandatory condition or one they chose to implement though? How's everyone doing with online? I've lost my connection once or twice but apart from that it seems really solid, not had any noticeable lag or anything even when worldwide, unless they just hide it better than in previous games. My score is only 1200 so far. I've seen one over 3000 so I wonder if they match you with people with similar scores? Anyway it's good fun and fast to do if I'm done with cups for the day. TheFlyingGerbil Posted August 8, 2014 Report Share Posted August 8, 2014 The Mercedes DLC is tied to an update that provides the following improvements:- Drivers will now have the option to display the course map on the TV screen during races Users will be able to check out statistics such as their total number of coins accumulated, win-loss record from online play, and their most frequently selected character overall Users will be able to change options of others’ Mario Kart TV downloaded highlight reels, such as changing the focus to a new character or event The order of the menu after each race will be changed to “Next Race”, followed by “Watch Highlight Reel” The game will remember the most recent customised kart settings that were selected, even if the Wii U system is powered down Improvements to stability of connection in online play to enhance the user experience Glad they're changing the order of "next race" and "show highlight" as I did click on the wrong one a few times and having the map on the race screen will be great. There's also a Mercedes Cup tournament between 27th August and 23rd September that you can only enter with one of the new cars. It's more just what they're hooking it to, to make the update sound more enticing/like an event, I think Nintendo still feels the need to "sell" an update to their customers. A software update on 27th August to Mario Kart 8 for Wii U will deliver a variety of new features for players, most notably the ability to download three free Mercedes-Benz cars I got the quote from the Nintendo UK website, which makes it sound like the update introduces the ability to download DLC and the first bit of DLC will be the Mercedes cars.
