Might as well JUMP!

No, I'm the total opposite. Usually if you can't jump (in the traditional sense) then it feels more realistic. Most of my favorite games don't allow you to just jump whenever you want: Mass Effect, Batman, Assassin's Creed.

I can't stand watching games like Halo now with everyone bunny-hopping all over the place. It's so 1990s imho.

Yeah I was playing Fable and... it's just horrible you have to get to the fences and such before you can vault.

It's mostly used as a sort of fidget mechanism. You jump way more in games than you would in real life. And I guess it gives them a button free to work on other things. But yeah it's nice when you can jump.

I can't play MMOs or Elder Scrolls games without jumping every step of the way.

Just makes you feel like you're getting there faster. Or something.

Lol, well that's an example of how jumping isn't a deal breaker for my gaming tastes. I love Oblivion and Fallout, and I jump like crazy in the former in order to level up quickly.

But it doesn't feel realistic at all, especially once you're leveled up and it's like jumping on the moon.

I actually hope TES V does away with the awkward jumping of the Gamebryo engine.

The jumping is quite floaty in those games, particularly Morrowind.

But ohh, I loved Morrowind's customizable spells and being able to power up and leapfrog across the continent in a few bounds.

What about games where you jump when you reach the edge of something but are otherwise grounded?

I find these to be the most comfortable to play. Usually in a 3D game you're obscuring your own view of the platform you're trying to jump from, making it more difficult to time your jump - a problem 2D platformers never had.

Considering with most games aiming for "realism", imagine putting on 70+ pounds of equipment, armor, etc... then jump. Now factor in running and strafing. Having your character vault or do simple climbing allows me to say more immersed rather than the bunny-hopping Counter-Terrorist unit.

Now in fantasy/magic/RPG/whatever-floats-your-boat games, as long as I'm not some heavy armored knight in full plate-mail doing 50 foot vertical leaps, I have to have my jumping. RPGs that limit my mobility and force me to find an opening or unlocked gate in a fence, or a path around some piled rocks, will forever be the bane of my existence.

I love how in some MMORPGs or other lesser-known games (usually free ones...Rising Force Online was a good example of this) they actually included a jump feature, but it does absolutely nothing other than look cool, like you're doing a little somersault in the air, making you feel as though you're jumping. Note that this game has no real "platform mechanics" and everything in the game is technically grounded to a surface. There were also a lot of glitches in that game, when people would somehow get onto surfaces they weren't supposed to get onto.

You jump way more in games than you would in real life.

You'd be surprised how much I jump in real life...lol. Being on a permanent sugar high will do that, I guess. Then again, I guess it's more of a "skip" than a jump, most of the time. I tend to imagine myself skipping along in games with the jump button like that, too. XD

I haven't played mass effect but you can certainly jump in Assassins Creed. I think also in batman AA, btw..

yes, but it's not traditional jumping. In AC you hold RT and without moving anywhere press A, and you NEVER do that. And in Batman he only jumps off ledges. This is not traditional jumping. I'm talking about jumping like Mario or Master Chief.
