Where are all these people coming from?

Is the new layout driving (even more) people away from Kotaku?

I strongly suspect that's it. More specifically, I think a lot of people who are long-time readers and commenters are beginning to feel like second class citizens while moves are being made to make the site appeal to a broader audience (as well as fit in with the Gawker scheme that people don't necessarily care about), sacrificing the things about the site that made it so unique that people made it their haunt.

Hello!.

And that's kind of the point of this place. Site-independent, so regardless of folks staying or going from Kotaku, folks still have a central place for chat.

That's absolutely what appeals to me about it. While I enjoyed (and still do) a lot of the content and writing on Kotaku, as well as the site's style, the thing that kept me coming back as frequently as I did was the community itself. Like any site that has such a loyal following, a lot of the people were bound to become disenchanted with it when it went through changes that growing sites usually undergo to match the growing demands of its reader base. It would be a shame for those people to wind up struggling to strike up a decent conversation on someplace like IGN, so I think it's really cool that this place exists.

Anyway, thanks for the "Hi"s, and welcome to you other new people!

Hey guys, I'm another migrant Kotaku regular who isn't happy with their changes. There was a link for this board in the TAY that was posted today, so I decided to hop in.

Once I started thinking about my history at Kotaku, I realised that participating in online discussions has actually improved me as a person in some regards, like looking at things objectively, hearing out both sides of an argument before judging, and making better arguments myself. I hope to continue with that here, even if the feeling of a dedicated forum is very different and is something I haven't regularly visited in over five years.

I guess I'll see everyone in the forums, and I hope everyone here hopes to meet or surpass the sense of community that Kotaku had. I'll continue to contribute as before with that intention, myself.

EDIT: And hey, if the size of my avatar compresses the text of the posts, let me know and I'll make it smaller.

Also, I are 21 soon to be 22 come March 15th. I lieks teh vidya games, anime, kitties, the old Kotaku, and trolling elitist journalists. I don't lieks teh new Kotaku, being trolled by elitist journalists, dogs, and people who are generally a**holes. I'm currently trying to get a job and ultimately working towards getting into the US Airforce, for great justice!

Hey Peeps!

I'm also from Kotaku. Some people here might remember me as I've been with Kotaku for a very long time. More than 6 years if I'm not mistaken. :)

So, how are things here? Anything I need to know? Are most of the members from Kotaku?

I'm getting quite lost at the moment to be honest.

Oh, and anyone of the editors from Kotaku go here? That can be both a good, and bad thing. :P

Hah! nope (Regarding editors). They seem to hate this place for some reason. ( astab in the dark suggest it's cos I'm running the place :P)

It's mostly folks from Kotaku. I think there's a few who aren't.

As for getting lost I'll be out in a few minutes (woot, filming finally) when I'm back I should really look into a walk through guide.

Most people here used to or still go to Kotaku. Things here are pretty chatty. Every time I click "New posts", I'm greeted to at least one full page, or more if I didn't check the whole day. As for editors from Kotaku coming here, I bet they at least came to visit once, but I doubt they care enough to regularly read what we type here. After all, their site has 2 mil views per month, and we only make up... 200 of those?

Hey Deanb! Yep! I remember you of course. :)

I kinda read what happened to you. Sucked big time. They hate this place? Isn't that a bit harsh of a word to use? Have you talked to Crecente in any way? I mostly get along good with Owen and Bash. Crecente? Eh...Not that bad, but rarely do I ever email him if I can talk to Bash instead. I do know a couple of people that don't like him that much.

Hmm. So how are things here? Didn't know you were in-charge! :D

Are we allowed to swear? Link stuff? Promote other sites? For example, I'm contributing for a BF site, is it ok if I link that out?

I'll most probably be lurking here from now on (hopefully). As I tend to do this sort of thing while working. Used to to do that a lot on Kotaku.

New site just makes it a chore to even do anything.

Sucks to hear that about the eds. Is this the same forums as the kotakuites one? :)

Yeah Crecente isn't very good with the whole PR stuff so I basically stopped bothering with trying to contact him. You can tell they don't like this place when any mention of it get's you chucked in the cornfield :P

As for what you're allowed to do as a new user it should of thrown up a bar on the top linking to the rules. If not:

http://board.pressxordie.com/topic/2-forum-rules/

And yeah, I'm kinda the dude in charge though Talitron is the lass that runs this place (and owns it etc etc)

Whats BF?

As for being like Kotakuites one, this is the Kotakuites one. Tali offered the chance to upgrade to swankier abode, and since the last place was some crappy freeforums place we took the opportunity and moved up mid-December.

What do you mean Crecente isn't good with the PR stuff? Oh, I take it we're ok here in regards to this? I mean we pretty much be brutally honest regarding Kotaku and the eds and there won't be any consequences, no? :)

Have you tried contacting Crecente? What happened? What?? mentions of this forum gets chucked to the cornfield? Did not know that...

I'll read the forum rules later. I'll adhere to it don't worry about it. :D

BF is Battlefield. Game has one of the largest, most vocal community in all of game-dom I reckon. :)

Ahh battlefield. See if there was a number on that'd I'd of probably figured that one out. :P

Crecente basically sucks are replying to folks. He tends to be a bit of a dickhead with response unless it's in response to you telling him he's gods gift to gamers and has awesome hair. There's some examples on the "fuck kotaku" thread (which that should tell you the answer to "can we be brutally honest".)

As for rules and pimping BF stuff, you hit two birds in one stone. Aka as long as you ask you're free to pimp your stuff. Stick it in a Signature, in a Battlefield thread (if we have one yet, I'm unsure). Maybe hook up with Masterdex, he has a BF2 clan if memory serves.

lad to hear it! Oh, and I remember you as well! I know we're all strangers here but it's nice to see a familiar face. :)

I hope a couple of people still use their old avatars as I know them by it.

Thanks! Glad to be here. Yeah. When I think about it, I've been with Kotaku since Florian and whatnot. My daugher wasn't even born yet. Now she's 3...Time flies, huh?

Haha! Sorry. I kinda assumed it was widely known. Like CoD. :)

Yeah. I get the "Crecente's a dick" response from a lot of people. Mostly because he thinks his opinion is more "correct" than any other people because he's a journalist. So, is it alright if I ask more about what happened to you? I mean I know you got banned, but did you try and email Crecente in any way?

I'll keep an eye out for the BF thread. If there's none, I'll make one up. :)

Loving the Fucking Kotaku thread. I'll post something relevant there as well.

Good morning/afternoon/evening/dead of night/whenever you happen to read this.

My screen name is Djehuty, a somewhat more accurate rendering of Thoth, the Egyptian god of scribes. I am 38, work as a newspaper reporter and have been playing video games since I was five, starting with a primitive Pong clone that was supposed to be my dad's but was quickly commandeered to greater, more noble service.

I play console and PC games in equal measure. I tend to enjoy games with a strong element of story and particularly enjoy those able to evoke genuine emotion.

The first game that made me cry was "Planetfall," an Infocom text adventure. There have been others, though "Planescape: Torment" still stands for me as a high water mark in the art of video game storytelling.

That said, I am pleased to live in the age of veritable wonders and prodigies that we currently inhabit video game-wise. I believe with fervor that games are in general better than ever, that we only have even better games to look forward to, and that the next few generations of consoles and computers will bring us truly astounding visions and remarkable storytelling alike.

I look forward to discourse with each of you.

Brian

I'll admit I had to do a search cos I know of a 38-ish year old newspaper reporter known as Brian as well (I think most of us here do :P)

Turns out you're not an alt :D (also google threw up a comment about you talking about Planescape :P)

Welcome

@excaliburps: Nah I didn't email him after. I kind of decided I didn't want to deal with him at all after I got wind of him stalking my facebook account.

Also I have a feeling should I attempt to send an email to them it'll end up auto-filtered into Junk, since Twitter I get this for all but Tottilo:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2066351/Screenshots/owentwitter.JPG

Also I guess crecente believing he's more correct than everyone else is a good way to describe it. I went up toe to toe with him regarding the 3DS (this was before release) I managed to highlight all the features it had just by looking at the FCC image (When you see enough electronics guts it starts to become easy to pick up on the basics) and pointed out it had a nub, SD card and the screen was much thinner than their mock up (I even pointed out why it made sense it would be 16:9 not their random ass aspect ratio). And he's all "Well you don't know this, but we have confirmed it". Thing is, I had a pretty damn good guess ( a 100% correct guess shown the next day) and he didn't have it confirmed cos it was still speculation. And they were fucking wrong too.

Also on one of his "blood diamonds are making your console" articles(this was my tenure away) one of the guys I know on twitter pointed out that these warlords can't be flying about on Concords cos they've been disbanned since 2003, and quite publicly so(nothings more public than nose diving over Paris), thus throwing his whole articles factual quality into question, or at least making you question if it's actually to do with Wiis or more from the era of PS1 early PS2 and just dug up from the old grave of articles. Of course Crecente replied with his trademark snark.

Welcome.
