Welcome Vecha. I remember seeing you every now and then

I remember you as well...Love, love being reminded how awesome those two were in the Muppets!

Another familiar face! It's good to see you here. It's like a high school reunion in this thread the last couple of days! :D

Yep yep!

Though, soo many I feel like I still have not seen since 2007-2009ish years.

I've been poking my head in several places. The King Kellog forum/site...the TAY HighwayIRC, and here.

Hey guys, current Kotakuite here. I've finally decided to check this place out, though I'm sill commenting on Kotaku. The new system is pretty awful though, so I'm not sure if I'll continue to do so in the future. I don't know, maybe I'll get used to it.

Anyway, glad to be here and I look forward to some interesting conversations in the future.

I posted a short history of hte place what I guess is now a couple pages back.

Basically it started as talkamongstyourselves.freeforums.org alongside the Steam group (which is still around though pretty much abandoned). Back when it was a fan forum.

whathasbeendone.JPG

(Which I have limited screenshots of it seems)

Then at the end of 2010 we moved to the Invision platform on proper hosting n stuff offered by one of the members, which because freeforums don't let you copy the database did mean starting a fresh. Also meant the start as a kotaku fan forum stuff could be properly ditched since by that point it was largely irrelevant.

(And I seemingly have no decent screenshots of that, but for the most part looked as it does now but with teal-ish stars pattern)

Chrome13.PNG

(Though I do have one from when Chrome added a feature I thought kicked ass on a netbook, but they removed some versions ago :( )

Then last year, in may or june, we had a big revamp of the Press X or Die blog a few of us had been running since Nov 2010. I already had the domain for a while at that point so it made sense to combine the gaming forum I ran with the gaming blog I also ran. And now we have X-talk at forum.pressxordie.com and here it will remain indefinitely since we have full control over how it runs n stuff. Shouldn't be moving home every again. Though it'll no doubt be getting tweaks over time. Main aim is to have it so that going from the forum to the blog it's nigh imperceptible in the overall visual look of the thing. Though that means me really working on polishing up my php/html/css skills.

So the pressxordie.com domain was made alongside it, but was generally a separate endeavour. But over time the two have collided into what we have now.

Ah...I was a part of the TAY forums...didn't joining that Lesbian Quarian site ;)

I think the reason I joined that TAY site was someone directing me to the "Asshole of the month" award as I was a mod during a Bioware "Talk to Dev" thingy and was deleting/disproving/etc comments that were asking about the controversy with hell...or something...the Dante game? I forgot.

Good times.

While on the topic of introductions here's a recent piece I wrote about myself at Kotaku. Normally I wouldn't promote this kind of thing, but Chaos seemed to think it was interesting, so I'll share it with you guys.

Edit: Pardon, the terrible spelling mistakes. It was late when I wrote that. (And I'm sorry for spelling your name wrong Dean!)

Can you post it here?

It is against my religious beliefs to visit that site.

Sure.

"On the eve on this commenting system, I thought I'd do a little something special. No I'm not going to whine about anything here, but as a veteran of this site, I thought I had to do something special for it. As I composed it, it turned into something of an autobiography (of my commenting) so I guess nobody cares, but I'll put it down anyway.

I've commenting on this site for 5 years now. I've seen a lot of stuff come and go. The site I used before this one was 1up, before that I can't remember. I came to this site because a family member who works in the industry actually uses this site. It's funny to think about. As a newbie commenter, I quickly got sucked into the community here. Everyone was accepting and nice (well for the internet anyway), and while people disagreed with you, they rarely slandered you. Correct me if my memory is mistaken, but I signed up about 6 or so months after they rolled out the beloved/reviled star system (and believe it or not, a lot of people hated the division even back then). A lot of cool commenter were around back then, and while a lot of the most present commenters were stars, they never really said anything about it (other than a few jokes of course). The highlight of my earliest career was to have an editor (no longer here) friend me. It's funny to think about now, but back then, I was pretty proud of it. A lot of these commenters disappeared into obscurity one day, as I came home and signed in finding myself surrounded by new faces, suddenly feeling like the veteran member of the teams, and the responsibly of welcoming them. If anyone wants to check out the site's history though influential commenters to the community, you can check them on my followers. It's certainly interesting to know who's shoes you might be standing on (Though a lot of users seemed to have disappeared from my earliest commenting days).

I don't know if I'm the longest user still commenting, but I can say with both pride and shame that I had the record of being the oldest user without a star. I never was witty, sharp, or funny. That was the major problem with the star system, normal commenters who held the site together were pass over for funny one liners, and that caused a lot of irritation. I remember quite a few quitting because of it. However I never felt like I needed one, and the users here accepted me without it, and really, that's what was greatest about this site. I only ever got a star because resident nice guy gigawings pushed to get me one (thanks bro). I know the post about the new system mentioned that the comments were unfriendly and unforgiving. I don't really know much 'bout the rest of the network, but I got oddly irritated about that line. The argument certainly would have been most persuasive without it.

I don't really know when I'll quit. I'm far too weary of moving on, but perhaps my fate is to fade from existence like many commenters of my generation. Perhaps I'll go out with an angry rant and a bang. There have certainly been a few who have chosen that route. A few users tried to create a Kotaku alums/fourm (Deanbv was the main push behind that, sorry about misspelling the name, I can't seem to find him in my friends chart). It never really took off unfortunately. Perhaps tomorrow you simply won't see me. Perhaps next month. Perhaps 5 years from now. But everyone moves on. It's sad, and I've seen a lot of fun people who I'd been hanging out online with just not come back. But there will always be new good commenters. Kotaku has had the lucky streak of adding constructive contributive people. To old users leaving, I'm sorry to see you go; it's been fun and thanks for being here. For new users; welcome.

I scrolled back up and I realized that I was rambling worse than Tim so I'll end it here. I'll be here for a little longer, at least as long as I'm welcome..."

I didn't correct anything so you're still free to laugh at my abysmal spelling.

Yeah...I remember many fleeing during the Star Fiasco.

I stayed because at least I could still read everyone's comments. With the new system...many more are hidden than with the star/approval system.

At least with the star system we, the users, had more power.

Not to mention today Stephen was basically arguing for the system. I understand part of it is due to it being his job, but come on. Try to at least hide the fact you don't give a fuck about the complaints.

He was arguing for it?

Basically just a repeat of the Gawker excuse? "Brings out the best comments! Doesn't discriminate in a class system! "

Or did he have other excuses?

When I was a star commenter I approved pretty much all comments(unless they were obvious trolls). I don't remember many feeling "left out"
