Heartless
@heartless: so what does a production coordinator do Makes sure all the cogs are working properly in the production machine...basically gotta make sure everyone involved in production know what's going on, are on task and getting their shit done (during smaller productions, writers have to have their scripts in, hosts have to be ready for practice runs, etc.; during bigger events, I have to have all of the equipment ready for cameramen and let them know what needs to be covered, electricians need to be supervised and told what we need, etc.). Since it's such a small operation, I have my hands in a lot of things (all of pre- and post-production, basically), so my job title doesn't really cover all I do. Overworked and underfucked. Mudkip3DS
I don't know if I can get used to two dot ellipses again. … … I'll get you back into training, Baguette. Also, I still need to introduce myself. *needs to think of a good persuasive opening piece*
brida
so how'd you get that job, did you study for it (if so, what's that called?) and if not do tell me, i think...the more i'm involved with game development the more i figure that a) unless by some magical unlikelihood where i can get in despite having a complete unaptitude with programming, it's not going to happen that way--so either marketing, which i'm studying, but while i could stomach being the devil for other products i'd probs hate myself for doing it for games, and the last two games i was involved with i was pretty much the project manager so maybe i'd be good at that. tl;dr
Shadowstep
tell me more about your hobby shadow I do a bit of everything. I do the programming using XNA so that I may eventually publish to XBLIG. I do 3D modeling in Blender and textures in Photoshop, too. Sound effects come from me recording myself making sounds. Music is just outside my capabilities as I am tone deaf.
D-K
@Brida: A mean trick it is not, fair maiden. The materialization of the ancient principle of Veritas posts before you. (Unrelatedly, sorry boss for my inproductivity concerning NMM, I attribute this this other aspects of my life being overly stimulated as of late. I shall take my posterior off the company copier and into some source material. I shall pick up the slack, post-haste!)

I was involved in a few projects while at college (I hosted a radio program for 3 semesters, and worked on the school newspaper for a few semesters before becoming the editor-in-chief). I just made it a goal to get my name around as best as I could. By the time graduation rolled around with no job prospects, my advisor recommended I meet with the CEO of the company I'm at now. When I met with him, it wasn't so much an interview as it was him telling me what I'd be doing if I decided to join, so that was...interesting. Ultimately I want to get into film-making, but work experience doesn't hurt (my portfolio is purring right now). And yeah, it would probly be better for you to get involved in project managing if you're not great at the tech side and not interested in marketing. Since I'm at least halfway decent at different things, I get to avoid specializing in any one area, which I probly wouldn't be great at, anyway. What kinda games did you work on? Heartless
Sweet. I haven't played with CS outside of PS and AE. Haven't had the chance to try final cut, although I have dabbled in video editing. I'm a bit curious to know what your startup is about as well, if you don't mind my asking. I so need someone who specializes in After Effects. Titling and such on our videos are all templates from Motion that I reverse-engineered to at least look somewhat like I didn't phone it in. But it's really limiting. lol.. your job sounds eerily similar to mine. Webcasting Arena Football for the past 3 years, and any other grubby events we can get our hands on. Yeah I remember you mentioning. I'm guessing you're a full-time employee? Mind if I ask how much you get paid?
Yarfunkle
Hahahaahaha.. I am currently full time, but I don't yet have my degree. I'm graduating this quarter. I get 20k a year. It's miserable, but as a student I can't really find anything that good around here, after all, they let me take off for classes and group meetings. Heartless
I'm still not even a full-time employee. I'm technically an independent contractor on my second contract with this company. I believe the company has to legally make me a full-time employee after my contract expires in February.
brida
20k for being an undergrad student ain't so bad. In fact that sounds p good--but, yes, it would depend highly on your financial situation and some such.
Yarfunkle
If I were a single student.. I'd love 20K. With a kid though, we're barely scraping by. Hint: Don't have a kid before you have a good job, it's stressful
brida
Aaaah there's the kicker right there. I think you said you were graduating soon, though, or was that someone else? I would think/hope that pay would get better with a degree, but maybe not since the market is such trash right now
Yarfunkle
I'm graduating this quarter. I interviewed for a position in Nashville, TN Friday via phone. That job pays 50k, so I'm crossing my fingers I get that. As for my current job, they'd probably bump me up to 30k. They're a startup that's bleeding money, so I'm not even sure they'd bump me up that much.

Yarfunkle
Definitely. It's been 5 years, and we're still a 'startup'.
