TornadoCreator
Hi, I'm looking to expand my horizons when it comes to contemporary gen RPGs. I know many are somewhat obscure but thankfully the PS3 is region free and English is often used as a default language. I was wondering if people could suggest a few RPGs that may be interesting, I'm already familiar with the Tales Of... series, Resonance Of Fate, and Ni No Kuni, as well as more western RPGs such as Fallout 3, Dragon Age, and Demon's Souls. I'm looking more for the JRPG, though any RPG would be worth looking into at least (except Final Fantasy XIII obviously, I have taste). Thanks in advance. Looking forward to seeing what people suggest.
Vecha
Maybe it's me and I just wasn't looking hard enough, but my god...it felt like the ps2 era was better for rpg fans. How about Nier?I have it, but never beat it...only put about ten or so hours in it. But it seems quite a few people really dig it.I'll come back late next year and scream PERSONA 5(hopefully...and to go off topic I hope it's as dark as persona 3)
TornadoCreator
I think the PS2 era was just more well known for RPGs. Honestly, much like the SNES, the PS2 sucks for RPGs here because they where either Japan only, or Japan and North America only. Europe gets shafted for video games, particularly RPGs. The region free of PS3 and Vita are the main reason I choose Sony as my primary hardware dev. It's the main reason I'll get the PS4 too. The PS3 has loads though, I'm just not familiar with them. Eternal Sonata, Disgaea 4, Hyperdimention Neptunia 1-3, Star Ocean 4, Valkyria Chronicles, Ar Tonelico Qoga, Cross Edge, Atelier Rorona, Time And Eternity, Trinity Universe, Agarest: Generations Of War Zero, Last Rebellion, and White Knight Chronicles are just some of what I've found on Amazon. Add in the games I already know about, there's at least 4 'Tales Of' games, Resonance Of Fate, Ni No Kuni, FFX/X-2 HD and 3 FFXIII games (even if they are shit). That's a lot of JRPGs and I'm certain I'm missing some... most of these I've not played and finding good non-spoiler information on them is hard. Hense asking for recommendations. I've heard good things about Neir, I'll probably pick that one up fairly soon.
Strangelove
Besides the stuff you already mentioned...ummm...Nier. I liked Child of Light a lot. South Park: Stick of Truth is pretty rad. Costume Quest was alright. Yup, thats about it for me. I think overall home consoles got the shaft when it came to Jrpgs. Most of the good stuff was on PSP/DS.I also felt that there really wasnt a huge abundance of good western rpgs. Or bad ones either. We were inundated with rpgs of all kinds during the PS1 and PS2 era, so thats what I was used to. Or maybe I was just tired of them by the time PS3 came around since the first few rpgs I played on my PS3 were terrible. 2008 was a slim year.I will say though, stay away from Star Ocean: The Last Hope, Eternal Sonata, White Knight Chronicles and Cross Edge. Theyre all terrible. Edited July 17, 2014 by Strangelove
TornadoCreator
Thanks Strangelove, these games all keep their value because they're often limited print or imported so cost £15-30 each... sometimes more. I don't like to spend more than £10 on a game unless I know I'll like it and these games rarely have demos (and even then, it'd be hard to judge from a demo). But yeah, I'm careful when buying games after all, disability benefit isn't much. Pity about Star Ocean... I was intrigued by what I'd heard so far so it was the one I was most likely to pick up next. What's bad about it, just in general? Strangelove
Star Ocean TLH has a pretty good battle system, but everything else is terrible. The graphics and music are decent, but the plot, the dialogue and the voice acting are really bad. Terrible characters, especially the main character. Its a really slow game too. It just felt tedious. I could say the same about Xillia, but I actually found it kind of charming. It wasnt an exceptional jrpg, but Xillia felt like a good PS2 era jrpg. Eleven
No, don't believe him! Xillia was way better than Star Ocean in terms of characters and story. Voice acting was also way better. I did like the battle system. It's very tales like, I guess Star Ocean and Tales games generally have similar battle systems. And that's a system that I really like. If you're going to pick one up, pick Xillia. In terms of story though, Resonance of Fate has even it even worse. Terrible, terrible pacing. Which makes the standard fare RPG story look real bad. It's a good thing the combat, once you master it, is really good. As is the weapon customization. IMO anyway. EDIT: What are the 4 Tales Games on the PS3? I only know Vesperia (which is Japanese only) and Xillia... Edited July 17, 2014 by eleven
Strangelove
Yeah, Xillia is good. It has some likable characters, the dialogue is actually pretty solid for a jrpg, and the story isnt anything special, but it does push the game forward. Its alright. Vecha
Sorry...forgot you across the sea...Oh, my. You just made me remember the rpgs I did play!Yeah, Valkyrie Chronicles is pretty good if you love RPG-Tactics! WKC1/2 was ok...felt kinda MMOish. So if you wanna grind. Go for it. Had some MP aspect to it too...not sure if people still play it. I'd say focus on something else. Or at least go check out a youtube video. I honestly wasn't impressed. However..I didn't play 2.I heard some good things about Eternal Sonata...I have it, but didn't play much of it. Then again. Maybe I didn't hear good things. And that's why it's gone unplayed. We'll soon have Xillia 2 and Zestiria which will bump it up to seven if you count the Symphonia games separately. Eleven
Ah... I have Graces f and I completely forgot about it...
TornadoCreator
I actually wasn't counting Vesperia as it only got an English release on Xbox 360. I was counting Symphonia Chronicles as two games.
Saturnine Tenshi
The Atelier series. Also Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel. NieR was already mentioned, and rightly so.

TheMightyEthan
Still a good topic for discussion. I'm sure there's others besides TC who would be interested in worthwhile RPGs on PS3.

toxicitizen
Well, yeah. I didn't mean it like that. But Tenshi hasn't been around in a while, I think. Just seemed like it was worth mentioning.
TCP
You know what we need ... is some PS4 RPGs. Amiright?! (I'm right).
Strangelove
You know what we need ... is some PS4 RPGs. Amiright?! (I'm right). Except this time theyll look like LATE PS2 games instead of early PS2 games like most PS3 jrpgs last gen.
