An Industry Doomed...

2.1 million dollars for a Kickstarter is hardly impressive? Do you even read the shit that you post? Mighty No 9 got 3.8 million and that was with Inafune. For someone who brags about how smart he is, you sure are stupid.

In terms of the game industry where games routinely cost over $100 million; no it's fucking chump change. Now stop being a pathetic fanboy offended because I dare have you question your beliefs about the industry and learn the scope of the bloody debate rather than hurling insults. So far you've failed to refute a single point I've made, where as I've refuted EVERY point raised in contention. Try harder rather than resorting to an ad hominem... Google it if the latin is too confusing for you.

Cowboy, show some respect! The man has a genius-level IQ and has studied at not one, not two but three universities! (I mean, it's not four but, you know...)

He is clearly our intellectual superior and we should consider ourselves lucky that he even deems us worth of receiving his wisdom. Now apologize to Elder TC!

Well technically it was two universities and one technical college; but that's splitting hairs... It's good to see someone who appreciates my intellect;

...in all seriousness though, if I'm wrong I'll admit as much. If someone can counter my points and debate with decent etiquette, I will concede. I'll happily say I hope I'm wrong concerning the scope of this crash and I sincerely hope that the systems are all selling well by next year. Obviously I do, I own three of them. I don't see it happening personally, as the effect of this craah are far larger with the industry also being much larger this time... but no-one can say for sure. One killer app and the industry could recover rather swiftly. I just thought this would make for a fun debate.

Holy shit, man. That's some pretty hardcore delusion you've got going on right there. After the last few threads, I honestly couldn't be bothered to read or get into this one. But after skimming the last couple pages, and based on past experience "debating" with you, I expect it went a little bit like this: your "rebuttals" were little more than opinions backed by absolutely nothing and you ignored or dismissed actual evidence and proper arguments when they refuted your own claims. That's simply not how a debate works.

You expect us to just accept your word as gospel because... ?

This isn't difficult stuff to check... just google it, you can see everything I'm saying is true, or do you expect every conclusion I reach to have a hyperlink directing you to someone else saying the same thing?

I'm sorry man, but yes.

I'm not trying to be an ass, but you've gone to college(twice). Stating something and not backing it up with a link, but instead saying, "go look for it," isn't going to fly. C'mon...what would a professor say to you if you said, "You want me to direct you to someone else saying the same thing?"

Also, I copied a link that PC gaming sales are over taking consoles....how is that niche? http://www.pcr-online.biz/news/read/pc-games-have-surpassed-console-games-globally/033849 There's another link.

PC game revenue...surpassing console game revenue. 25BILLION dollars...that's not meager.

Now, I guess you could say, "well what's selling the most isn't a game I like." but...that doesn't really matter.

The Game industry will continue to evolve. That doesn't mean it's doomed or crashing.

US sales tracking company NPD noted that PS4 and Xbox One sales are "now almost 80 percent higher than the combined total of PS3 and Xbox 360 sales after 13 months on the market."

I'll just leave this here...

Sorta... Glad I never saw this thread till now...

And yes, when you look at the cost of AAA-budget game development, it's staggering. But that does not in any way mean games will crash. The publishers are savvy. They mitigate risk. They predict 5 million copies sold on a game and it sells 2 million? They probably still made a profit. And then you can look at the many successful, great quality mobile games which cost a tiny amount to produce but rake in hundreds of thousands!

The industry is changing and has more emerging, hard-to-read markets than ever. But crashing? Nahhh, bro.

I kinda enjoyed Tornado's insane presence.

He disappeared for good since July, yeah? Following that status...

Well, it made for some damn lively threads, that's for sure. It was kinda funny at first but when you got into it with him it was like reaching your hand out to a drowning man only for him to struggle needlessly and end up dragging you down with him. But with insanity instead of water.

That's not correct.  They might need to learn that people have different opinions and different understandings of the world.

See, I think you hit the nail on the head there. That seemed like a very real issue with him. So many times he would insist that "No, I'm clearly right!" on the most ridiculous shit. Like, it's one thing to be so opinionated that you won't even consider the opposing view might have some validity to it. But then he'd also do it even when he was 100% factually incorrect, which kinda blew my fucking mind. Btw, did you know that countering breaks your combo in the Arkham games?!

I really doubt he's come back under another name. He just doesn't seem like the kind of guy who'd be able to remain unnoticed. Not with his attitude. And honestly, it was kind of a shame because, credit where credit is due, he actually did start some interesting discussions. The problem was he'd end up ruining them as soon as people started replying to him.

I can't resist bringing this back up:

Sony just announced that PS4 has sold 29.3 million units.  After the same amount of time on sale the PS2 had sold 24.99 million, the PS3 16.6 million, the 360 13.4 million, and the Wii 34.55 million.

So the PS4 is midway between the PS2 and the Wii for sales at this point in their lives.  Yep, the industry is TOTALLY in a death spiral...

If anything, I'd say it's doomed to a future of microtransactions, cut content, half-assed ports, and season passes that fail to deliver, but that's an entirely different kind of doom we're talking about here.  The industry is not about to go bankrupt.  It is, however, getting progressively shittier the further we go into this generation.

And here I thought there's no way these new consoles had any shot at success. If these numbers are true, then I have no more sympathy for the idiot consumer base, who is willing to be suckered in. At this point there's no way there will be anything even remotely resembling another industry crash, but everything that's bad about it will grow bigger as long as there are people who can't resist the urge to waste their cash on minor, contrived shit they don't really need.

Rocket League is a fantastic game that features micro-transactions. Games have always had content cut from them. There have always been shitty ports. There will always be shitty deals.

I think games are better than they have ever been. There is more depth, variety and choice than ever. We're a million miles from the days of muddy brown "realistic" shooters and the occasional racing game being all there was on offer. We've got everything from CoD, to Forza, to Destiny, Rocket League, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Volume, upcoming titles like No Man's Sky and Detroit. Unique games like Don't stop talking and nobody blows up, and TIS-100 that would never have seen the light of day 10 or 15 years back, and all at prices ranging from free to $60.

There's so much great content out there that you could play a different game every day and never have to touch any of the shitty content. If all you know of games is watching Jimquisition squirty plays and rants, then yeah, it looks crappy. But bear in mind that he goes out of his way to dig up this crap as it is good for his content. He's not going to make a video of himself where he spends five minutes saying. "This here game is pretty alright." or "This game was free and the microtransactions are inoffensive, I wholeheartedly support this."  Same goes for Yahtzee, reviews of games he likes are never as popular as the ones he heaps scorn on.

Why so cynical Jack? I can't help but feel optimistic for the future of games, between AAA games being better than they were last gen, and indie games delivering new experiences, this is the best state games have been in for awhile. None of your four concerns have been an issue for me and I can't see them being big issues in the future. Let's dig in!

Microtransactions: These been a thing for awhile now, and they haven't affected me at all. I haven't spent a dime on them, I don't really play a games where they're integral. AC Unity had them, I ignored them as they were pretty much just time savers and say what you want about that game but the game wasn't designed to push you into needing things sped up. MGSV also had microtransactions but I honestly didn't even notice it was a part of the game. If you're playing F2P iOS games then yeah, microtransactions might suck but if you're doing what I imagine most of us are doing, playing mainly singleplayer AAA and indie console/PC games, then it's not really an issue and I can't see it becoming one. Right now they are an issue in some PC/console games, like Payday 2, but if you notice a trend, the majority of these games are shitty games from shitty developers. I expect microtransactions in $60 retail games to end up like the online pass, something that publishers realize in a few years isn't really working.

Cut content: The only game I've played that I can think of had severely cut content was MGSV. It was still a massive game that I've spent more time with than any thing generation so I definitely feel I got my money's worth out of it, but yeah there was definitely a missing mission or two. But I'd say that was due to Konami's own incompetence, not a sign of the industry. And they're leaving the console/PC gaming industry anyways, so it won't really matter going forward. It is annoying when things like skins, which 10 years ago would have been an unlockable, are now paid DLC add on (looking at you Arkham Knight), but that's more of an annoyance than anything.

Half-assed ports: Bad ports have always been a part of the industry, since day one. Honestly, as a predominately PS4 gamer, I haven't really noticed any bad ports this generation. That was not the case with the PS3 last generation.

Season passes: Again, I haven't bought one, I just buy the DLC individually for what I want when it comes out and it hasn't been an issue. Outside of maybe Fallout 4 and the Witcher 3, I don't think of any recent and upcoming games that I would want all of the DLC. What I'm trying to say is you don't need to buy the season pass, even if you end up buying all the DLC and spending an extra 10 or 20 dollars over the course of 4-6 months, at least you had the option to pick exactly what you wanted to buy.
