Connorrrr
Gods Will be Watching is coming out tomorrow. I'm pretty psyched. It looks very interesting. Also terribly dark and uncomfortable in times. From what I can gather it's sort of a point and click game? Lots of decisions... Pretty pixels... Will anyone else be playing? I'm kinda starting this thread so we can talk about decisions and the like when we actually play it (presuming I'm not the only one interested). toxicitizen
I won't be grabbing it at launch but it's been on my radar for a few weeks. Looks pretty cool. There's a free browser version if you guys want a sneak peak. http://www.deconstructeam.com/games/gods-will-be-watching/ Haven't taken the time to try it, though. I've no idea how different the new one is supposed to be but I assume it expands on the concept significantly.
Mr. GOH!
The new one is a full game and different. The browser game is more like a proof of concept; I don't think any of that stuff will be in the new game.
Connorrrr
I don't want to play too much of it in fear of ruining it for myself, really. Although I'm being slightly hypocritical because I did watch the forty minute long Giantbomb Quick Look that Vinny and Alex did today. Looks neat! Connorrrr
Wonderful. It unlocks tonight at 6 PM GMT for me here in the UK. I'm gonna be taking screenshots of all my decisions (The bit that tells you what you did and what percentage of other players did that) just to keep tabs on it all (I do the same thing for Telltale Games) so we can share those here, so long as they're very well spoiler marked. Connorrrr
So I started the game... It's fucking hard as hell, firstly. I must have tried the first mission at least ten times and each try is fairly time consuming, and there's no checkpointing either. You spend half an hour on a mission and ultimately fail? You start again. I can kind of understand it because, to be honest, if you failed at the end, you probably failed in the middle somewhere and was never going to recover it, so checkpointing may not have been much help, but I won't lie, it can get very frustrating. This is culminating where I am at the minute. I'm on chapter five, I believe. I've tried it probably five or six times now. I don't want to give too much away but much like all the other scenarios, you're responsible for a group of people and you have to complete a certain task in a certain amount of time while keeping their needs at the top of your mind. Any number of things can happen which result in a failstate. Losing single members of your party luckily isn't one of them and is actually necessary if you stand any hope, I think. I'm probably wrong, though, maybe I'm too quick to put a bullet in my comrades. Anyway, I'm really enjoying it for what it is and I love the stats at the end, but people who were thinking they're going to be presented with a game full of open choices are not going to like it. There are plenty of choices in each singular level but they kind of exist in their own plane, they don't make a terrible amount of difference elsewhere in the game... From what I can tell so far, anyways. A lot of the time you're forced to make the difficult decisions. You probably can't go into a level and say "Right, no one in my team is going to die" because chances are they will and half the time you need it to happen for the greater survival of the team. It's very bleak and very interesting but I can tell some people will have a problem with the way those choices are presented to you. Anyway I'm giving it a break for now, I'm about at my wits end with the current mission. The biggest thing this game has going against it at the minute is that some of it is just too frustrating in parts. I want to keep playing it but I can't just keep throwing myself at it the way I have been doing, I need to regroup. The game requires patience that wears thin after so long of playing it, so past a certain point you just have to drop it for a little while. I do hope more of you pick it up though, so I'm not just in here talking to myself!
TheMightyEthan
So how does this very negative RPS review match with your guys' perceptions? It's also interesting to me how everyone seems to talk about how nice the art style is. I think it's ugly as sin, and I don't even usually mind pixel art
Connorrrr
Honestly.. It's pretty hard to argue with. As I said in my last post, the level I'm on is tedious as all hell. He speaks about it in that piece. Wandering through identical levels of desert while trying to keep your party hydrated and well rested, but also meeting a deadline to find this one screen in a massive desert of screens. It's kind of nightmarish actually. Unlike the writer though I'm still plugging away at it. This one level is really testing my patience but it hasn't pushed it off the rails yet, I still want to see what the game holds. You aren't made to care for the characters all that much, and that's a shame, because when it comes to deciding whether or not to sacrifice them or not, it would make for a more interesting conflict if you actually cared. The more I think about it, the more it depresses me, to be honest. I am enjoying the game for what it is but the more I play of it the more disillusioned I'm getting, I suppose. Like I said, I intend to keep playing it, and I think I will finish it, but I can't imagine a world where I subject myself to it more than once, even for the sake of challenges like keeping everyone alive or whatever. Cinder
I agree with the general sentiment here. Sort of regret the purchase. I bumped it down to basically the equivalent of "gimp the game mode" (which is just one down from the intended game mode) and it became playable but still a slog. It definitely made me distance myself from what I was actually doing in game and then I started trying to game the mechanics, and this was the point I think. In a way they forced me to become a souless bastard through frustration and dealing with how unfair it all is at first glance. Which I think are the main themes of the game. So it's good in that sense, but from a gameplay perspective it sucked.
Connorrrr
They did recently do an update called the "mercy update" that takes out all RNG for anyone frustrated by it all (optional mode called puzzle mode) which is neat but I dunno. I'll get back to it at some point.
