Mal
So this is geoscience hell.
deanb
Yeah, looks like it'll be worse that Core, if only because they've a bigger budget to make it more terrible.
Hot Heart
*Bright trailer* I remember reading about this an age ago. I remember the writer, Max Landis, sort of boasting about it because it was some multi-million dollar package that he "sold" and he wanted to make sure he got Ayer to direct it. Of course, that was before the world saw Ayer's Suicide Squad.

deanb
Apparently the main shtick for that is it's all shot to a beat, but hard to push through a trailer, but seems to do well enough. Fun fact: The museum/mirrors bit in John Wick 2 is set to a percussion-less version of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, with the percussion the gun shots (which means it was choreographed and edited to a fine degree) This seems to be causing a stir: Reminds a bit John Wick style actually but a female lead. Shame it goes with the "slow music" trope. And I guess "queen tunes" trope. And totally failing for a film called "Atomic Blonde" having Atomic by Blondie as the track, like WTF. And on a friendlier note a Pixar teaser
deanb
I was originally going to put this into the TV thread then I noticed that it's "Original Film" pops up for a split second so I guess it's going here. And I'm wondering how they plan on fitting it all into a 2hr-ish movie. And as is common, and will lead to the usual articles on the matter, it's being made with western actors (pretty sure that's London Eye in there so might even be set in UK). Thing is if they made it with new characters in a new story they'd kinda gloss over a lot of those issues, it's established that other Shinigami drop their books down now n then. You'd have reason to be set in not-Japan and for why they're cramming in a 60 episode series into a two hour movie.
TCP
Hey if they make Death Note not sexist-as-fuck then it'll automatically be better than the anime.
TheMightyEthan
I watched the anime and don't remember it striking me as particularly sexist...
TCP
Ethan, go watch it again and check out how almost EVERY female character is portrayed. Light and his dad are bad ass detectives, while his sister needs Light's help with homework and only cares about popculture. Ray Pember's wife is described as being a great FBI agent, but quits her job to start a family and gets bested in about 5 minutes. Most of all, look at his girlfriend, and how she's portrayed, and tell me that's not sexist. When all of your female characters are portrayed as shallow, inept, and less capable than their male counterparts, you have a sexism problem. TheMightyEthan
I should have said "particularly sexist for Japanese media".
TCP
It's really one of the only animes I've ever watched, but I was DISGUSTED. If this is just how anime is, then Japan needs to adjust, ASAP.
deanb
Check Full Metal Alchemists. The Elric brothers are taught their alchemy by an "ordinary housewife"(it's what she calls herself). Armstrong is shown as this big buff dude, who then is promtply torn down by his sister. Hawkeye is extremely competent soldier. And there's Winry who is a highly skilled mechanic, famed around the world(well the bit they're in) for her skills. Though I guess a big part about Izumis arc is that she's lost her womb trying to get her kid back. Envy is "sexy" but clearly shown as far more competent than many of the men and leads the homunculi for a while. But beyond the above it's just tres bien and still my top anime series. I guess Nina Tucker gets portrayed as a bitch for a bit of it.
CorgiShinobi
I don't particularly remember Death Note being sexist. Really, beyond Light, L, and N, most of the supporting cast are either yes-men or pawns of Light. Especially the ones close to "Kira" are psychotic. I forget her name, but his girlfriend was absolutely bonkers and was willing to mess with Light if he didn't like her back. Then his little Kira proxy appeared as your average joe, but became the likes of a blood-thirsty zealot. Even L and N, while being the good guys, they're not exactly the idolized hero-type. And in the end, perhaps why I don't have Death Note as one of my favorite animes, is the descent of Light. He quickly devolved as a character with his god-complex and the absolute power of death. What honestly kept people watching was the cat-and-mouse game between Light and L. Even with N, Light became a less interesting character. EDIT: I will say, I might take a peek at the series as I'd like to see Willem Dafoe as Ryuk. Edited March 22, 2017 by Atomsk88

deanb
This is out this weekend. Reviewing quite well so far. Pretty much mostly set within the one warehouse, which is always an interesting stylistic choice.
deanb
Could be interesting, tbh my main appeal to watching the trailer is that I used to live on the outskirts of Wakefield. And something a lot speedier than the above: a 15 second long trailer that's pretty much possible to be the entire film in retrospect.
deanb
Something a bit more slowed down than the above but not the same scenes

deanb
Yeah quite out the left field in how popular it was. You read the comic it's (sorta) based on? I like it has Mark Hamill in both the comic and the film (though in one case he actually is Mark Hamill). Other than that I feel the film did it better.
