Mr. GOH!
I read the first four or so volumes of the Battle Angel Alita manga years ago and everyone has manga eyes in it; hers are not specifically different, as I recall. Ready Player One will be a vacuous nostalgia trip, kind of like the book.
deanb
Re: Battle Angel - So I've seen folks be "well she's an android, so it'll make her stand out as non-human", but that falls down with the "but there's other androids and they don't have weird eyes". Re: Ready Player One: Crazy thought here but I think Spielberg, that Oscar/Golden Globe winning/nominated director might do an alright job in adapting the book, especially given Jurassic Park was pretty heavily reworked for the film apart from the "dino park gets made, is a disaster". But maybe the guy who submitted Schindler's List as his film school dissertation piece might be a crappy director. Dunno.
TheMightyEthan
Wait, it's just her with the weird eyes? I thought it was all the girls. (I have not watched the trailer, just seen the stills.) If that's the case it makes even less sense than I thought.
Mr. GOH!
I believe that the director of Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull could make a glossy piece of garbage. Spielberg has made some great movies and some stinkers, but lately he's just made *boring* movies. His overdeveloped sense of sentimentality will combine with Ready Player One's nostalgia and its own sentimentality to make a glossy but ultimately empty movie. It will have well-directed action and lots of emotional manipulation (a Spielberg specialty), but it won't have anything interesting to say and I doubt it will be as fun for me as the book was. At least I don't think Cline did any direct product placement in the book, which I doubt is the case for the movie. Edited December 11, 2017 by Mr. GOH! deanb
I'd say his output of good films outweighs the output of bad. Anywho with Annihilation it turns out I actually own the book on Kindle, so I should maybe give that a read sometime. All down for some Oscaar Isaac and badass women and weird sci-fi trippiness. Mr. GOH!
The Southern Reach trilogy is pretty great. I hope Garland does it justice with the movie.
TheMightyEthan
Well, now I have something else for my reading list after I finish Artemis.
deanb
Mortal Engines teaser (warning, it's one of those "plays 5 seconds beforehand" things) Oceans 8 teaser.
TheMightyEthan
11, 12, 13, 8. WB is even worse at counting than Microsoft. That Mortal Engines thing looks interesting. The machines are cool as shit, obviously it's yet to be seen whether the movie is any good though.

deanb
The musings I've seen on this is that it's potentially related to some Super Bowl advert rather than an actual movie. But who knows.

deanb
New Duncan Jones film. Has a bit of hype around it. Could be interesting. And yeah, he''s a Skarsgard but looks like Jack Dee if Jack Dee was on some heavy chemo or something.

deanb
Also this and this That film where people have run the numbers and The Rock gets killed by gravity. And a new Annihilation trailer Still weird to me this is only releasing in cinemas in US and China, it'll be Netflix everywhere else.
Mister Jack
There's no trailer yet but I just heard that Black Dynamite is finally getting a follow-up movie (kind of) and I am god damn ecstatic. It's not going to be a direct sequel though. This time it's going to be a western called Outlaw Johnny Black, but it's still going to be doing the whole blaxploitation parody thing.
