Neat.  I read like the first 4 or 5 of those books, and liked what I read.  Though it strikes me as the kind of thing that might work better as a Netflix series than as a movie.  Actually, I think most books would work better as Netflix series than as movies, so...

Yeah, I also read the first five books years ago. Been meaning to finish it for years. I've been anticipating an adaption for so fucking long. I'm not entirely sold yet (especially not on Roland's casting) but I can't help but get excited. I don't know if most books would necessarily work better as series than movies but this totally would, yeah. The production values kinda look rough anyway, a GOT-like HBO series would probably make for a much stronger and faithful adaptation.

Also I can't quite tell what kind of approach they're taking here. I mean, they're clearly skipping book 1 (or it'll be used as flashbacks, which honestly is probably for the best). But if it's the Drawing of the Three, then where the fuck are Eddie and Susannah? I really hope they won't deviate from the source material too much...

Yeah, I guess really I mean most book series would work better as a Netflix/TV series than as a movie series.  Trying to make books into movies results in having to cut out so much stuff, and while if done well the resulting movie can still be quite good, in book series you start to run into problems like "this part isn't absolutely critical to this book specifically, but it becomes important 4 books later" kind of stuff, so the flexibility of a smallscreen series helps because you can leave in so much more.

Villeneuve I can get behind, bit more Blade Runner sure. But not super keen on Leto or aged Harrison Ford. Dave Bautista is pretty fun though, not sure how much he'll have to do in this mind. I think Drax is his only major role, pretty much everything else is bit part henchman types and that'll probably happen here. I like the cyberpunk tunes though.

Also iirc isn't a point of the first one is replicants are banned from Earth?

Oh on book front Kingkiller Chronicle is being adapted by Lin-Manuel Miranda and one thing they're aiming to do is films for the main bits and a TV show alongside it (I think with TV stuff mainly being the novellas, which are also kind of "things that happened along the main story" stuff).

Dark Tower movie is not really an adaptation of the novels.

It's a sequel.

I'm not sure how that even works but I have a feeling unless I want book spoilers I probably don't want to know... It's not like I don't have plenty of time to read the last two books but it's been so long that I kinda need to start over. And a seven eight book series is a little daunting considering I haven't read any novels in forever. Also I would need to grab the new book, I guess.

Well, I just tracked down and dusted off my copies. If I leave them sitting in plain sight I'll probably guilt myself into starting them eventually.

Just remember that the first four were written years apart. Also remember that King is a maniac whose writing style can be grating. Also remember that he got into a very serious car accident between books 4 and 5 (I think). Also remember that Wizard and Glass is a flashback novel that mostly takes place before the first novel.

I mean, I like the books, but I'm not sure I would recommend them to folks in general. They start off as a "Man with No Name" kind of Western without much context, and then morph into an epic, bizarre, and increasingly complicated hero's quest with backstory and context filled in as the books go on, but not in any way that makes the world(s) they take place in feel real. But that may be part of the point, it's hard to say. I haven't read any of them since 2005 or thereabouts.

Despite the series' grand ambitions, remember that King views the whole thing as a deeply personal work.

This trailer sells it a bit better than the one Netflix put up (and seem to have since taken down). Which is also a weird thing in that it's seemingly on Netflix but also in cinemas. I never got into Mighty Boosh and related stuff (still can't wrap my head around Noel Fielding in GBBO...or GBBS as I've found out it is in US), but my sis was so she's likely watching this.

I am hype. I should probs rewatch the 2nd one (no idea on the name of it cos tbh their naming scheme so far been a bit crap). Watched the first a chunk though, surprise hit considering "remake of planet of the apes but it's set before all that and also has James Franco in it" wasn't the greatest pitch.
