toxicitizen
It somehow looks even more amazing than I could've ever expected it to. A true spiritual successor to the Mario Bros. movie!!! 1

Mal
That would be about on par for what SFPD would do but this time... maybe I would look the other way?
TheMightyEthan
The director has now said they're going to be changing the design. I'm just shocked this design made it as far as it did. How did even one person look at that and think it was okay, let alone the entire teams that must have worked on this?
toxicitizen
What? No! Don't change the design, it's a glorious masterpiece! Then again, they were apparently trying when they came up with it. So, hopefully by trying to improve it they can somehow make it even worse?
TheMightyEthan
Even internet randos are able to come up with better designs...
toxicitizen
Yeah, I'm assuming they were going for a more "realistic" design (more animal-like, less cartoony) so that it wouldn't clash with the live-action stuff too much. Those fan-made designs look better in screenshots but I feel like they might look weird in the actual movie next to human actors.
Mal
It can be this generation's Space Jam.
CorgiShinobi
Is it just me or do the huge nostrils also look really weird. If they're gonna go for a more cartoony look, maybe ditch the nostrils (or at least shrink them)?
TheMightyEthan
10 hours ago, Mal said: It can be this generation's Space Jam. This. That movie shows that cartoons can work just fine with live action. As does the Detective Pikachu movie, even though it's also going for a "realistic" look. Trying to change Sonic's actual design to something more "realistic", instead of just putting a realistic finishing layer on the base design, was an objectively terrible idea. toxicitizen
While we're changing things, maybe take another look at the story? I kinda want this version of the movie to be real.

deanb
Well firstly let's get down to business: The general word is that this is going to tie in closer with the actual legend (isn't it real btw?) than be a remake of the original animated flick. Which for Disney is a bit of an odd choice, be more interested to see a more grounded take from a different studio. But I guess with Dumbo getting rid of the talking animals and adding some more IRL elements (such as WWI and Spanish Flu) worked out quite well. And on remakes we have a new Charlies Angels. I'm kinda down for this. I'm quite liking the multiple Bosleys. And the focus on the "new songs" I guess they're wanting a kind of Independent Women kind of success off it too. Kinda liking the twist here to change things up a bit while still retaining the star power of the second. The last was a bit of a surprise hit for many folks, so this one has a bit of a weight on its shoulders to match the new higher expectations. And from the director of TLJ comes a pretty neat looking neat whodunnit. Current theory is the killer is Tim Curry, it's the only true solution.
MetalCaveman
The story of Mulan comes from a ballad if I remember correctly, so yeah, more legend than anything else, looks cool, shame they're losing the songs but I guess it makes sense given the direction they're going with. Mal
Mulan with some Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon/Hero moves towards the end. Also, whoever is in charge and is of Chinese descent is Hakka since those buildings are typical of the Hakka people (there's multiple groups of them too!). Since where Mulan hails from differs with each retelling (earliest and most common ones seems to be from Northern China... during times it wasn't under Imperial China's rule), it's okay (What is Chinese has been historically... Complicated)! And yes, it is a folk tale/poem/ballad. I'm kind of interested in the movie now...
MetalCaveman
Looks cool, much more serious tone too, at least based on this one trailer.
deanb
This trailer is pretty much just 2 minutes of plane stunts so I'd guess that's what most of the film will be. This trailer however is pretty much 2 minutes of nightmare fuel..

TheMightyEthan
Much like the Sonic movie, I have no idea how a sufficient number of people looked at that and were like, "Yeah, looks good to me".
