deanb
Bit of a minor topic on more generalised film stuff; cinematogrpahy, effects, making ofs, etc. Since I tend to quite like that kind of stuff. I remember taking attention to Sherlocks use of text back when it first aired, seen it pop up in House of Cards too (also shown). It's a good topic to tackle, since text messaging and similar isn't something you could really avoid any more at this point, yet as the video states, cutting to a phone screen tends to look both stupid and breaks away from the action. TheMightyEthan
House of Cards was the first time I remember seeing that method, but I like it a lot. Just like the video says, it pretty much solves all of the problems with texting on screen.

Don't laugh. Hollyoaks was the first time I saw this on screen, and that was about 6 years ago. Credit where it's due, they got in ahead of the curve on that one. It's not as interestingly done as Sherlock or HoC, but they ran with the idea. I've also seen them do it with twitter, albeit with slightly less frequency.

madbassman39
When did guy ritchie become an acclaimed director? When Snatch became an international success? I don't know, but he did a great job with the first Sherlock Holmes with a decent follow up with number two. :/
deanb
Ah, trailer tropes. Though the "establishing city shot" thing is a bit picky cos ...well it's in the name.
Thursday Next
Nolan's worst film is pretty decent. I really enjoy the prestige. *shrug*

TheMightyEthan
Just watched that trailers thing. Idk, I feel like saying all trailers are the same is kind of a pointless criticism (assuming it's meant to be a criticism) because trailers are just ads, so they're just going to be calculated to make you want to see the movie. Whatever formula works best, that's what they're going to use.
deanb
http://imgur.com/a/BhoNh#0 Pretty cool list of actors first appearances, need to scroll to bottom n load them all to get the write-ups though.

deanb
http://imgur.com/gallery/eUWrx And more "before they were famous". I was under the impression Ian McKellen was a relatively late bloomer to the scene, though maybe it's more he did theatre acting rather than film?
deanb
Some of these are insane. I thought most of Gotham was minature I can see why a lot of modern sets look like this:
TheMightyEthan
Understandable, but there's a lot to be said for practical effects. Ever since Apollo 13 every other movie's zero-G has looked dumb and fake to me.

Mister Jack
He was trying to do crowdfunding for a shit sequel to his shit movie which was basically the film equivalent of Hatred. He tried Indiegogo and failed miserably there, then he tried Kickstarter and failed miserably there as well. Then he filmed himself throwing a huge bitch fit and quit Hollywood.
deanb
Not quite "film theory" but a good look at how reality TV is made. Having been on similar in the past it's pretty much spot on. "walk to the shop cos it's healthy" ...we then all drive cos the closest supermarket is a 20 minute drive away. "reality TV" my arse.
