Mudkip3DS
I've been curious about the Amiga lately, and have gotten quite an interest in how the machine worked. While it came way before my time, I'm quite impressed with how advanced and ahead of the time its graphics and soundchip were (sampled instruments, baby) compared to Windows and even the Mac. I'm jonesing for a response, so all I want to ask is if anyone here has ever owned one, and how'd you like it? To end this off on a cool note, here's a cool music video/demo feature I found that was made with an Amiga in 1992, apparently. EDIT: Should this be moved to PC, or stay in here? I'm more for keeping it in Retro, but do keep in mind that the Amiga was released as a home computer, so that's why I was thinking this should possibly have a chance in PC Gaming. mintycrys
I had an Amiga. I used it primarily for demos, though. We all used MT on it (FOUR CHANNELS BABY) but were fucked and had to get REAL computers when IT, ST, and FT hit the scene.
Mudkip3DS
MT? IT? ST? FT? What do all of these abbreviations mean?! Agreed on the channels, though.
TheFlyingGerbil
It wasn't at all before my time I had an Amiga 500. It had a GIGANTIC (about 15cm) modulator sticking out the back to plug it into the TV which if you ever moved anything on the desk even slightly it would dislodge from its port and you'd lose the signal - particularly annoying during a frantic bout of Street Fighter (unless you were losing, lol). It was pretty ace actually, I used to love the speech synthesiser on it and the games were ace. You can tell how fond of it we were as we actually thought it was a good idea to buy an Amiga CD32. That was less successful Oh, and I have no idea what those abbreviations mintycrys used, sorry. They've made a new Amiga OS version 4 which is still supported but it only works on PowerPCs. Joe P.S. I've just noticed how old this thread is but after typing all that I'm bloomin' well gonna post it!
arbitarty
I had an Amiga 500; I remember playing Monkey Island 2 on it (among many others), albeit without any sound or colour. Which isn't quite the same... I still have my Amiga 500 sitting in my other room. And good news for you Amiga guys - Speed ball! on the iPhone was released, It holds pretty faithful to the original too, and brings back loads of memories playing it. SomTervo
Mate, Jesper Kyd did the music for that video. That is fucking sweet. He did all the music for IO Interactive's games- from Hitman through to Freedom Fighters. Also did the Assassin's Creed series, more recently. Amazing guy, this is a total old school gem. Mazer
I wish I'd gotten to this thread while it was active, but I can't pass up an opportunity to mention Cannon Fodder. I loved this game so much at the time I can barely remember changing disks every three minutes.
TheFlyingGerbil
I loved Cannon Fodder too - Sensible Software also made the only football game I've ever liked. Sensible Soccer
halfbeast
yeah, I had one too. we were a big commodore family, started with the C64 and went on to Amiga 500 (for me, my brother had a 2000 - we had big discussions about the differences between his 1MB chip RAM and my 1MB fast RAM, I doubt any of us had a clue what we were saying). at some point I bought an Amiga 1200 but didn't use it much. I remember somewhen mid 90s we had a cd-track ripped on to 3 discs, to listen to this ONE song you had to change discs like every minute. ridiculous! and don't get me started on the 12 disc Monkey Island 2 version. twelve. discs. gah! fuchikoma
I never owned one, but I've played on them before and have a healthy respect for them. My god, the multimedia abilities of those things! I got into emulating them on my 500 MHz Pentium 3, and some of the coding demos would still make it chug. While I wasn't hugely into them, especially in the 90s, I did listen to a lot of MOD/S3M/IT/XM/etc tracked music. I actually used to use a command line app in MS-DOS on my 286 to feed them through a Disney Sound Source (and a similar, compatible device I made from plans before that - very, very simple device, basically a row of resistors.) Ah, great stuff. I also loved playing Boulder Dash on an Amiga at a friend's place and making hellishly devious maps for it. I found it a while ago on another system - XBox, or maybe PC... great strategic digging game. I grew up playing Digger, and this was like a whole new dimension of that. TCP
I think there's about 3 old Amigas in various storage closets in this office. Doesn't seem like they were ever that used.
TheFlyingGerbil
A lot of old Amiga games that work on your PC, without an emulator. Woohoo.
