Final Fantasy XV

Well the combat animations look janky, especially that dodge/sidestep move.  Not great.

On the other hand, I really like the premise.  Bromantic roadtrip?  Those are both good ideas!

The roadtrip thing is smart because it gives a context to the old JRPG party trope.  With the move to realistic graphics just "mash all the characters into a single model and wander the overworld with them" thing doesn't work so well.  Having a central vehicle for the four of them gives a rational reason for this game to do what JRPGs always do anyway.  Sure makes more sense than "and then the group of heroes walked to literally every inhabited point on the globe".

And the bromance idea is also a good idea I think.  See, JRPGs are all about a group of young people traveling together but the relationships between those characters are nigh indistinguishable.  Childhood friends, "old" mentor characters all the way near age 30, romantic couples that can't admit they're romantic couple, comic relief muscle heads... I could list the cliches all day.  This doesn't look like that.  This looks like it's focusing on just adolescent males and how they interact with each other.  This may or may not end up being good on it's own, but it's definitely different.  I like different.  If big budget Square Enix can't even do different, then different in JRPGs is dead.

For the bromance angle to work though, I feel like a lot will hinge on the localization.  I wonder if we'll get FF XIII Square Enix localization on this or Dragon Quest Square Enix localization on this?  (For those heathens not in the know, Dragon Quest localization is really good).

I don't know, on one hand, I'm kind of bored of all my characters being shaved head men, BUT on the other hand, it really bothers me that they have all these ridiculous haircuts and they're riding around in a convertible all the time... has no one in Japan ever ridden in a convertible?! But, I don't judge people (or characters) based on their appearance, unlike you GOH... you jerk!!

Oh come on, nobody actually thinks this is a convertible do they?  This is Final Fantasy.  That thing is an airship.

But see FFIV. In keeping with FF canon and tradition, that black vehicle in the FFXV trailer is clearly a hovercraft.

We can only hope that, at some point, the protagonists will exclaim that it is full of eels.

FF has had active time battles since like.. FFIV? FFXIII was turn-based, don't know about the sequels but I would assume them as well.

Wasn't Versus XIII initially supposed to be some kind of action-RPG similar to Kingdom Hearts, though? I wonder if that's still the case, that trailer certainly didn't look turn-based. Then again, FFXIII didn't really either when you looked at it in action. Might just be an evolution of that, making turn-based look as real-time as possible.

I like the combination of XIII-2's ATB but still being able to control your characters location, that was a great blend of traditional RPG mechanics and action. I'd be interested to see what XV's combat is like these days, I think the last time we saw gameplay was 2011... maybe?
