Final Fantasy XV

I think XII's ADB was the best "real-time" solution they've had so far, while still have the tactics of turn-based. I like playing JRPGs cos you get the tactics of various moves, but once you head towards the action RPG side of things it becomes more about rolling about and button mashing-ness. Which is fine, but it has its place and its place is not in FF imo. X was really nice with the CTB, no pressure at all in what you chose, and great if you needed to take a break. Obviously people need more exciting games these days that seemingly no other game can fulfil :/

Agreed. At the very least not in a mainline entry, yeah. I would be fine with an action-RPG spin-off like Versus XIII originally was. But now that it's become FFXV I kinda hope they reworked it to be turn-based in some way. Wouldn't feel right otherwise.

Wasn't Versus XIII initially supposed to be some kind of action-RPG similar to Kingdom Hearts, though?

That was/is the plan.

XII's ADB is fantastic but yeah, it seems like we'll be getting a Kingdom Hearts battle system offshoot. I'm still in the camp that if Final Fantasy's battle system evolved to anything, it would be what Kingdom Hearts did. While it's not turn-based and it is more frantic, it had real-time spells and summons. In ways it reminds me of Brave Fencer Musashi (I wouldn't be surprised if Square got experience from making BFM).

Note, I'm not saying it will feel right... it's just what would be acceptable. Besides, face it. Final Fantasy as we knew it is long dead. Time to let that dream fantasy die.

While I am partial to turn-based systems, I've come to terms with the fact that most of them nowadays are going to be either strategy RPGs or something that looks like it was made in RPG Maker. And I don't mind an action RPG as long as the combat is decent. While the story and characters in the Tales games I've played tend to really bother me, I do like the combat. And heck, you could end up with a game like FFXIII where, despite being turn-based, I thought the combat was horrific.

Seriously, no one else thinks the characters look like awful people? Am I just too old for these new-fangled RPGs?

The character designs are awful, and exactly as I would expect from a JRPG, so unremarkable.

It's SquareEnix we're talking about. There is nothing positive about them anymore.

What's with this attitude? The 13 series certainly had some things going for it even if it wasn't as good as the past games. Deus Ex: HR and Tomb Raider are great. They've had a few other good titles over the past couple of years, too.

DXHR and Tomb Raider were Eidos, be like calling Wolfenstien as Bethesda game. They're just publishers.

Over the last generation S-E has had many stumbling blocks, with Fabula Nova Crystalis falling apart, leading to XIII, XIII-2, XIII LR, Type-0 and FFXV instead of Agito and Versus, stumbling with mobile on stuff like All The Bravest, and absolutely tanking with FFXIV MMO. 7th Gen was without a doubt their worst generation since starting FF.

However the future does look brighter. After blowing up what was FFXIV to rebuild it a FFXIV:AR, which by all accounts is a pretty good MMO now, and making a fair bit of headway in expanding their titles to PC a lot more now (Can anyone say that they weren't surprised by FFXIII hitting PC?), and seemingly finally getting FFXV soon out the door they should be a bit more stable.

Oh I saw that, but it was cancelled out due to your comment about the character design.

The characters are toned down, by a lot, based on previous FF games. It's modern, but still has some fantasy influences, which matches like the rest of the game/setting that they've showed us. Lots of black though. It does not look like the usual FF game, or JRPG for that matter (think FFX, Star Ocean, Lost Odyssey, Resonance of Fate, Tales series). I don't remember seeing flowing robes, high collars, buckles and belts. It still looks "japanese". I don't know exactly how to describe it, it's just different than how western games are designed. But it certainly isn't standard fare.

But I mean,  the companions are all just wearing jeans and jackets! It's close to what FF7 peeps were wearing, probably because of the similar "modern" setting or all the black and dark surroundings. Compare that to how Basch, Ashe, Penelo were dressed. Or Auron, Wakka, Lulu.

TL:DR

It should be boring, but it's so different than the norm I think it actually works quite well.

Might want to skip a fair bit in (about 3:30), mostly just panning around things with Japanese over the top at the start.

It would seem, though it's not super surprising, that the leaping around mechanic is pretty limited in the "where", but that's not too surprising.

A lot more enemies than previous games (though XII you could pile up on enemies a fair bit in certain areas with kiting and what not).

Here's some info translated from a Famitsu interview

Interesting that they note it started out more action-oriented but mention that it has changed. It sounds like the entire game has changed quite a bit, really. I wonder if it was significantly scaled back. The director change is fairly recent and it sounds like it isn't too far off anymore.

Also, open-world + manually driving sounds weird as hell for a FF but it could be kind of awesome.

Can't wait for that demo!

Is the warp button the teleport one? He did it in the middle of combat, I hope they make combat situations designed around that ability.

I don't even understand the Crystal thing in FFXIII. I understand that's supposed to be a central theme around the original 3 games for XIII but I don't remember them seeing in the 3 "new" XIII games. I might have to read up on that.

I wonder if you can offroad that car. THAT would look really weird. It will probably have invisible barriers. Or one of your friends will hit you in the head and ask you not to do that. The "secret zones" sounds like you can look for them yourself as you drive around.

I feel the open world and driving around is a lot like final fantasy....just a huge overworld map...that you are now "in" instead of looking at from above.

Love that direction.

Wasn't a big fan of the story in XIII...and actually never finished it. I hope XV isn't a convoluted mess.
