I’ve read that it has won awards and that it is seen as a really great game but I can’t for the life of me see how the game would even come close? I even have to say that even Dragon Age 2 is way better and oh how I complained on that game. The game offers you choices in how you play it, you can stealth sections and entirely avoid combat, or you can run in guns a'blazin'... unless you mean story choice in which case not every game should offer you dialog options like Telltale and Bioware.Again, emotion... did you even pay attention to the story? Did you understand the relationship between Joel and Ellie? The effect losing his daughter had on Joel?Backstory? Granted, the DLC did give Ellie some backstory but we had enough backstory on Joel to understand where he's coming from, and there's enough exposition throughout the game that you can understand most of the major character's motives. Well it's pretty clear they had a romantic relationship at one point, but obviously in this world, and after losing his daughter, Joel probably wasn't the easiest person to be with. Again, did you skip the cutscenes, it's heavily implied (or outright mentioned??) that Joel's brother joined the fireflies which resulted in their fall out. Also, again Joel probably wouldn't have been an easy person to be around after he failed to save his daughter. It doesn't really matter what caused their fall out, just that they had one and in the game reconciled, which is proof of Joel softening. Clearly you can figure out that Joel was a lot harder than the optimistic Tommy, which also could have lead to some fall out between them. What's nice about The Last of Us is it doesn't hold your hand and spill everything out. Naughty Dog value the gamer enough to figure these things out on their own. Joel is still a wrecked man after his daughter's death, and Ellie is upset after Sam and Henry die. As for the people trying to kill them, I can't speak for everyone but if this was a post-apocolyptic world and people regularly tried to kill me, I wouldn't be too upset when I killed them. And clearly the game didn't take course over 15 hours so the story mostly focused on the more action packed moments of Joel and Ellie's adventure, not them walking for days at a time. And, of course, there was parts of the game without combat that we're fucking beautiful. Quote Battling against only 4 kinds of enemies makes the game even more repetitive. The game isn’t even good for exploration even tho the world around them looks large and beautiful. This is maybe the only valid point in your entire review. It's a weak one, but I'll give it to you anyway. Bravo! Quote 17 hours later of meaningless killing and almost only one-liner cut scenes from each character just made me so disappointed. The only things that this game have going for itself is the gore and the graphics. I have nothing more to say… "I have nothing more to say" = I actually just ran out of bullshit to throw at this game. Thursday Next Posted January 9, 2015 Report Share Posted January 9, 2015 My only real issue with TLoU is that I felt like I was forced to leave areas that I wanted to explore because it was populated by enemies that I had to stealth past. Yeah, I think that was kind of the entire point. Joel has had enough taken away from him and he's not putting up with it anymore. Like Cowboy said, if it makes you uncomfortable because you disagree with his actions, then that means that the ending was very effective and succeeded at what it was trying to accomplish. And I do hold this game up against games done by Bioware amongst others yes, like Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect and many others though I have noticed that new games today are going up in action only and battles and down with the story. I just felt that the relationship between them didn't progress through their interaction, more through the force of the game to push it forward. For example, Joel is cold and dismissive all through the game until one point which after he is so affectional against Ellie. Yes, he might be chrushed about his daughter but what about Tess? No mention of her again, at all. If they would have been close in the past, wouldn't he be at least a bit more visibly sad or at least mention her later or something? I wouldn't do what he did, one person over the rest? That is just stupid. If it would be a apocalypic game, wouldn't he be so "numb" then by all the death that she could help the future to get rid of it? Besides, why do -everyone- wanna kill you? Aren't there anyone else out there that wants to help like Joel and Ellie, Sam and Henry? I just don't like games where the entire game is built up by action and battle rather than exploration, getting to know the lore and characters. They do have parts where they walk far, but it just fades to black instead of doing something good with it. I had high hopes for this game, that I admit after playing Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two souls that I played just recently even though they might not be similar. And you took the mention of enemies out of the fact that I do state that there are only 4 kinds of them which you point out as well, wouldn't there be more stages for example? And the fact that there are big rooms time and time again, filled with Clickers, that I need to either battle or sneak past. Not very creative. But yes the game is beautiful, though I do not know how the giraffes would have been able to survive there when most other animal life in the game is dead or not exicting in the middle of town. And I have to say, albeit the negative comment. Thank you for reading it Did I tackle everything or did I miss anything? Oh, and I didn't promote it, or at least didn't mean to. I like the blog. I noticed Kreia not being mentioned once in your listing of top 10 female characters in games. She is one of the most complex characters I have seen written. I could do a character study on her alone, as Obsidian's vision of her was not nearly as grand as she turned out to be. Mr. GOH! Posted January 10, 2015 Report Share Posted January 10, 2015 (edited) TLoU had one of the strongest narratives and best characterizations of any game I've ever played. Not that it's my favorite, but that it is probably one of the best-crafted games ever made. It's odd to see a review that dismisses it without really making a case as to why it sucks. The game is ultimately about Ellie and Joel's struggle to survive and their relationship and not about the decade or so between the prologue and the story proper. The game reveals enough information about their pasts for the player to have a pretty good idea as to who Ellie and Joel are as characters, and good idea about how Joel spent the years between his daughter's death and the main part of the game. A formal, prosaic recounting of what happened would be far less interesting than what is in the game now. And the enemy design was quite good; the combat and stealth sections always felt tense, but fair. Naughty Dog also does an excellent job of using limited enemy types in different configurations and in a variety of excellently-designed gameplay spaces to make every encounter feel different and exciting. TLoU may be the most tightly-designed AAA game I have ever played. It's not my favorite game, but I cannot deny it is an all-around excellent game. Edit: Also, Kreia might be one of the most surprising and interesting characters in all of the Star Wars universe. She is definitely one of the best female characters in popular media in the past few decades. Still tough for a video game character to rival those in the best novels, but Kreia compares quite favorably to any movie, TV show, or video game character.
