IDDQD
https://www.elitedangerous.com/ So nobody's interested in this? I didn't see any topic related to this game around here and it's been out for like a month now. Pricing&the fact, that you can't get it anywhere but the official site is a bummer, but other than that it's amazing. Like Space Engine, but with ships and lasers and actual stuff to do! For me this is a dream come true, so if you're incredibly boring, like me, and dig this sort of stuff - share your thoughts!
TheFlyingGerbil
My brother used to love the original but I never really could get in to it so I've not been tempted by this one. Do they plan to make it more readily available? Seems weird to only have it on their own site. Isn't it online now? Maybe they've soft launched it to make sure it's stable before it goes on steam and suchlike and gets hammered.
madbassman39
I bought into it in August. My impatience for this game crashed my computer. I love it, but I hadn't played it since release because sometimes the game can be really thin. If you are interested in a sandbox space sim, this game is the best option right now! I remember reading some BS from Braben (series' creator) about having no benefits in distributing the game through third parties, as they are supporting it all on their own anyway, but somehow I get the feeling that "Elite" isn't just a title of the game in this case. It seems really obtuse to abandon what could be easily hundreds of thousands of potential new customers, but whatever. I've been poking around to see why this thing is so overpriced, but apparently nobody cares enough to pose such questions anywhere. Even more reason to suspect that the main audience are ye older gamers, who can afford it, or hardcore enthusiasts, who will shell out anyway because there's basically no competition on the space sim market (that last X game was such a disaster that even egosoft went out of the loop for the time being). Maybe when Star Citizen will come out they will get more lax on their policies.
madbassman39
My friend keeps asking if he should get it, my answer to him is "if you can not wait to play a space sim, then yes. This game is solid, but if you're in no rush wait until Star Citizen comes out, by then either this game will be more fleshed out or Star Citizen may be the game you actually want to play" I honestly bought into this game because I was looking at Star Citizen and got super giddy, then I looked at this game and it was in beta and I could play it right then if I wanted to. I guess this is a whole different cup of tea than Star Citizen, but yeah, it is a good substitute for the time being. Either that or you can go back to some of the classics. Actually, Star Citizen is what Freelancer was supposed to be back in the day, but it was pushed to release too soon. It's actually pretty good if you want something very close to SC and lately there's been a mod released that makes it look like a million bucks. It's called Crossfire 2.0 - http://www.moddb.com/mods/crossfire
OzuJL
This game looks pretty neat, but I'm still on the fence whether I should get it or not. My excuse for not buying it is that I already have way too many games that I have bought but not played so buying yet another time sink doesn't seem reasonable. TheFlyingGerbil
definitely try not to buy games until you're ready to play them. It's a digital download, not a limited edition physical copy, so it's not going anywhere and who knows, by the time you want it they may have seen sense and put it on steam, or reduced the price. Either way it weighs on my mind having so many games I own but haven't played, I guess it must for others too.
madbassman39
News letter came out today. Building capital ships and stations? Usually it's more about collecting that shit and not playing it at all, because you can't decide which one you'd like to play, but for me right now it's actually the other way around. I have so many games that I really want to play, but don't have nearly enough time for them all. News letter came out today. Building capital ships and stations? madbassman39
Released on Steam a week ago, which has pumped up population tremendously. I have a friend who I finally convinced to buy and we just whip around every Tuesday night tearing shit up in our space ships. The player community has made this game more than what is in the digital package. There are player run factions such as CODE (a notorious pirate faction) and others who group together to protect their cargo from NPC pirates or worse, player pirates. I had the dreams of becoming a pirate, but as bounty hunting and smuggling seems to be doing me well I just keep at it pissing off some factions in the process. Mal
I need a sale... summer sale please do not disappoint me! Also, I assume a flight stick would be useful for the flying parts?
madbassman39
I use a flight stick and HOTAS, but you can use mouse and keyboard effectively (my buddy does that) or you can hook up with a 360 controller and it already has keymapping which you can change to your liking. IDDQD
It's been a long time coming but I finally got it today. Alas, I bid adieu to all other games I own because right now my only goal is to reach the galactic core and leave a stream of golden shower there. A worthy effort. After that, I guess I'll have to wait and see...
madbassman39
It can be a long road to get the hang of the many many systems in the game. Good luck. Chances are you're going to start off loving the complication, then get frustrated when you try to do something to earn any amount of money, then you'll slow down and really get a good feel of the game. After that its a rabbit hole of figuring out the different attachments and min/maxing your ship to fit your needs. The best part is that there is no "right way" to play the game, so its all trial and error. Enjoy! If you need a friend to play along with, you may find me flying around from time to tome. IDDQD
Sure man, that sounds great! Yeah, I expect to spend my first ten or so hours on figuring out the game before embarking on my epic quest, but what worries me the most is that I will require decent hardware on board first, just in case some dickhead decides my ass looks like a bullseye. And that, I think, will take a whole lot more time.
IDDQD
So, 40 hours and couple of unexpected events later, I got my grubby hands on a brand new Cobra and some upgrades. Now I just have to earn a couple of thousand credits for Detailed Surface Scanner, in order to get most cash out of my extended pilgrimage to Sagittarius A*, and I'll be ready to go online and get Pickard on this shit. Though from what I saw it may get tedious fast. I've already stuck my nose beyond occupied space once, only to find out that beyond the small pill of space around SOL, there's nothing but big, empty, lonely void out there, and the distance I covered in 4 hours was nothing compared to the whole trip that I'm planning. Maybe there's a chance that I will encounter other pilots on my way there while online. Edited May 13, 2015 by IDDQD
madbassman39
The game will test your patience. If you get bored, mix it up. Go to a more popular station and start trading or bounty hunting. I'm flying a cobra that is almost 100% upgraded, so I'll swap out components to trade or bounty hunting or even conflict zones just based on how I'm feeling. Exploration is a very solo experience, but its also very profitable. Good luck commander!
IDDQD
Yeah, fully equipped for exploration, I'm hoping to earn enough cash to buy a decent combat vessel once I get back. Then I will kick some ass. So far I was avoiding dogfights since most other pilots could decimate me with nothing more than a sneeze and trading is just not my cup of tea. Exploration is the way for me. Besides, I just HAVE TO see that supermassive black hole up close. Maybe I will be able to enter tesseract and tell my past-self to do some fucking work instead of playing video games...

I have a bunch of tabs open and forgot which one I was on, so when I first read this I thought it was in response to the camping gear talk in the Post Your Purchases thread.
IDDQD
What, you mean you didn't know that regular camping trips can get you a decent warship? I have four of them already!
Mal
I'm going out to eastern CA so I bet I can find crash alien space ships and experimental aircrafts that I can cobble together into a functional machine. It's just like Minecraft, right?

IDDQD
It's been almost two weeks already and it feels like I barely left home. At this point I'm pondering whether or not I should auto-destruct, spawn back at the nearest station, cash in all the data I've gathered and fuck the whole exploration business. Pretty disappointing to find out that outside that small pill of space around Sol there's just one big pile of nothing. Why would anyone need such a vast place to explore if it's completely devoid of content? I'm curious about upcoming No Man's Sky for that reason. Everyone I know is excited for that game but if in this case procedurally genereated world will also mean having a lot of vacant space to explore then it's going to be really fucking boring.
madbassman39
I think exploration is probably the hardest one to really enjoy. Combat is good but it always feels without context. I'm hoping this powerplay update will change all of that.
