Horrific Game Deaths

In most games when you lose or die you get either a canned animation or a simple text box. However, some games feel like that's letting you off too light. Some games will try to humiliate or traumatize you either by depicting your demise in exceptionally graphic and drawn-out detail or, in the case of many older or PC games, using text to describe either just how badly you failed everyone or just how agonizing your last moments were. Have you encountered losing scenarios in any game you've ever played that just made you stop and go "That is some fucked up shit!"?

Game Over screens that go the extra mile to show the consequences of failure also count.

I have to confess, I'm struggling to think of many death/game over sequences because I don't see them that often. I rarely play a game beyond "normal" difficulty and don't seem to see it often.

But, a few things have come to mind:

Grand Theft Auto 4 -- Get on a motorcycle, get to full speed, slam into low barrier, and watch as Niko (or whoever) flies upward of 50 ft and then rolls and tumbles. Great physics, very painful looking. Totally turned me off the idea of getting a motorcycle.

Codemasters racing games (DIRT, GRID) -- you don't necessarily "die," but when you crash you can rewind, fast-forward and play through the crash and it usually looks really cool.

My cousin told me about this one, so I looked it up on Youtube. It's from Resident Evil 4. Face melt, eww! XD

And then there's this LP from this guy I met at Anime Weekend Atlanta. He plays some kind of fan-made platformer game called "I Wanna Be the Guy! The Movie: The Game" which looks very sadistic. Not to mention downright frustrating! In a later part he calls the character an "exploding blood bag" because of the crazy death animation. (This is just part 1...there are 14 parts total, about 6-10 minutes each.)

Anyway those were the first things that came to mind when I saw "Horrific Game Deaths." Just wanted to share. :P

Damn, I am not sure I ever actually saw that during my time with SH3. Or if I did, I didn't stick around long enough for it to register.

I didn't die when I first entered the room.

I was all "Oh, door locked. Crap." Then I started looking at the mirror and saw what was going on, and the door was still locked. I started raging and telling myself "I WILL NOT BE THE VICTIM OF A SIERRA DEATH, FUCK YOU GAME!" It then unlocked and I felt incredibly trolled. Which happened a few times in SH3...

Leave it to Sierra to not only kill you for a completely stupid reason, but mock you afterwards for not seeing it coming.

Hey! This is Space Quest, man, part of the humor IMO was from the funny death messages you got from dying. I always used to try to find ways on how to kill Roger Wilco when I played Space Quest. :P

Now, Police Quest on the other hand… THAT was a tremendously punishing game. If you didn't even follow just a little bit of standard police procedure, you "lost" the game. Ugh.

I think the following kind of counts as an annoying death rather than horrific (unless you count green-colored flesh in EGA mode as "horrific" :P ). It just left you sitting there at the screen with nothing left to do. At least Sierra had the decency to pop up a "Restore/Restart/Quit" dialogue.

(Also, I lol'd at the commands.)

I'd post that OTHER Monkey Island "death" screen (where Guybrush falls off a cliff but bounces back on the top with a rubber tree), but I don't have that screencap, unfortunately. :(

I wouldn't mind the sierra deaths if there was a more convenient quicksave option.

I've just sort of learned to always save every time I take a major action, so it's not really a big deal for me (save dialog wise).

Actually, even worse than the deaths in my opinion are the situations where you reach a dead end, or a zombie situation… If you've ever played King's Quest V… you would know about these. <_<

EDIT: Oh man, that was scary. O_O Reminds me of the bad Myst endings…

Achenar's ending scared me the most when I was a kid. crying.gif

EDIT 2: Had to change the video to an non-speeded up version. Jump to 2:27 for the video.
