Nintendo is making smartphone games, y'all

An endless runner Mario could be cool, and a Pokemon RPG just makes sense but, I foresee this leading to a lot of match 3 games and other F2P trash.

The NX announcement was so half assed and empty... "A new dedicate gaming platform, we'll talk more about it next year"? So.... E3 2016, which is 15 months from now.

A unified account system is cool, if it stops making me rebuy virtual console games.

To be utterly fair, it is your own lack of willpower that causes you to endlessly rebuy games that were released a decade ago or longer.

I foresee a lot of annoying mobile tie-ins to Nintendo core games and F2P but stupid IP cash-ins a la Final Fantasy All The Bravest.

I'm calling it.

This is the "make it or break" venture Nintendo will embark on. Collaborating with another company and making new hardware to chase after a demographic, it has the makings of carrying your tombstone to your grave.

Truth be told, it's an interesting idea of creating a hybrid gaming device with a smartphone approach. The problem arises that it has been done before to an extent in the past and the biggest problem is the way the smartphone gaming market thrives: F2P w/ Microtransactions. I know people tend to forget about it, but Sony tried to tie in their Xperia line of phones into gaming portables with PlayStation Network.

It never really took off and now, if you want an Xperia phone or tablet, it does PS4 Remote Play. Not a bad thing and it plays to the strength of those devices as companion devices. I just don't see Nintendo needing companion devices for their consoles yet.

Nintendo is not doing great, really; it's benefiting from the weak yen.

Here's a pretty good CNBC article from the end of January about Nintendo's business health.

Edit: Nintendo is still fucked. If it unfucks itself, it will not be with the sort of products we grew up loving.

that's certainly the kotaku-eque headline you've created from the quote.

Nintendo repeated several times  during the announcement that they are more interested in presenting their IP to a wider audience than profiting from them in this venture, and that they would have control over the aspects of the app the customer interacts with (i.e. the game) so it doesn't particularly matter what spin DeNA is putting on it, when they "haven't talked to Ninendo about targets". Yes there's the potential for things to be fast and cheap, but if pokemon shuffle is anything to go by they won't be pestering you for money.

I'd be interested to know what you'd like Nintendo to do apart from, it seems, to lock all their employees in their HQ and set it ablaze.

Geeze, Gerbil, you make it sound like I hate Nintendo. I do not hate Nintendo. I grew up with Nintendo. My greatest early gaming moments were all on Nintendo. What I would *like* modern Nintendo to do is to abandon the home console hardware market and make great multiplatform Nintendo games for console and PC. I don't necessarily think this would be great for Ninty's bottom line, however.

What I think Ninty should do if it wants to save itself is to embrace mobile trash gaming with DeNA, make a mint of of the sort of people who spend money on F2P mobile games, and reinvest the earnings in their handheld offerings and making their next console a real competitor with the PS4/Xbone, hopefully to be released in 2016 or 2017. I would not advise them to chase the home fitness market unless they can somehow make their fitness offerings work with a wide variety of third-party fitness tracking devices (like smartphones, the iWatch, for example) in a compelling way.

If they don't have a decent account system when they relaunch in Autumn, I think I will permanently give up hope for it (well, at least for this hardware generation) The reason I'm semi-hopeful is they've referred to it repeatedly as a membership service which includes a reward program aspect, so it is not just a rehash of club nintendo. Fingers crossed it's not paid, as that's the feeling I get from the way they keep referring to it.

AMD has said they are creating two semi-custom (one x86, one ARM) designs to be released in 2016, at least one of which is a games console. There are lots of rumours swirling around that it's nintendo's new console, or even that both of them are if it's some sort of handheld/home hybrid. Also, that that's the reason for the Zelda delay to do a TP style multi-platform launch. Of course it's all wild speculation but certainly a possibility.

Mr. GOH!: The only consistent negativity I see on this forum is from you, toward Nintendo, and if it was on a big gaming site so I didn't see all the other good stuff you post I would think you were trolling. I usually ignore negativity - there's a lot of posts (not just Nintendo-related) here and elsewhere I'd like to make but don't, as I don't want to get into drama , but I replied to your post with a snarky comment because I was in a bad mood, which was not the coolest move but I don't think entirely undeserved. No hard feeling I hope. If so I apologise.

No hard feelings at all, Gerbil. I suppose my 'negativity' towards Nintendo comes as a reaction to the unjustified optimism (and fanboyism) regarding Nintendo I see coming from all sorts of different places, though not necessarily here. I intend my over-the-top thread names to be somewhat snarky rather than totally objective. I don't think my actual posts about Nintendo are negative, in the sense of trolling or just insulting Nintendo; I generally try to base my opinions as to their business decisions and the messes they find themselves on reporting in the business press rather than the gaming enthusiast press.
