Popular Post TCP
Awesome, now GOH! can see the thread where everyone posts pornography. I mean, uh, that doesn't happen. What? I'm just TCP, I don't know what I'm talking about.... GAME OF THE YEAR!!! deanb
Yeah iirc GOH ages back was "nope not be here cos porn". Also while I've picked up a PC code I'm suddenly thinking "hmm, PS4 might be a good idea and can play together maybe".
danielpholt
I just finished a 2 hour stint on Destiny. First thing I noticed about Battlefront? The shooting feels very not-fun in comparison. I know they're going for different things, but Yuck.
Mr. GOH!
Yeah, I remember mostly being worried about my employer somehow having a problem with it since I log on from my work network. In the years since I have learned that my employer does not care about these sorts of forums, but I forgot the members page even existed until Ethan moved the codes there. I had thought it got shut down a few years ago around the time the branding shifted to PXOD.
TheMightyEthan
I'm just careful not to visit any NSFW threads from my work computer (and if I do it on my phone I make sure I'm not connected to wifi first).
danielpholt
Okay, so I've realised the game is built to be a 3rd person shooter that's got a tacked on first 1st person view. It feels much more natural when you're playing in 3rd person, plus running around as a StormTrooper is always a lark.
Mister Jack
Is anyone else kind of underwhelmed by the beta? I know it's a beta and all but it just isn't really blowing me away over here. I can't quite put my finger on it. I guess it just feels rather ordinary for something that was so hyped, especially compared to the last game. danielpholt
I think it's a fun, if not altogether revolutionary online shooter with some soft feeling shooting. It looks fantastic on PC, and if you're into Star Wars you're probably going to enjoy being in that world, but for the most part it feels awfully forgetful. deanb
I had a bit of a shot with it last night. It's not overly brilliant at explaining some concepts but it's fun enough, especially once you unlock gear so can start jumping around and using a sniper rifle (which I'm a dab hand at). Started lagging like crazy though so called it a night. I'd say main issue is it's not showing too much new, I remember Hoth from previous Battlefronts (though I'm pretty sure this is much bigger). I'd say with the drop pod one it's more that it can be a bit one sided (especially as there's no match correction stuff so we ended up 6 vs 1 on one match and I had a 2 vs 0 on another) with pods appearing next to folks spawn points at times making it a bit easier for one side to capture and defend. The buddy system is kinda nice for getting you in the action, though I'm not sure how it's meant to work as sometimes it's there and other times it isn't. Also Hoth interior could do with a map or something. Oh btw how'd you make it go 3rd person? Though I could maybe figure it out myself, I do need to change a few key bindings cos 1234 is a PITA to hit without stopping dead.

'Soldier Camera' or something along those lines. I think you can swap camera's whilst in-game too, at least on consoles. I made the switch to 3rd person and much prefered it, the movements speeds seem to suit that style a little more IMO.
Baconrath
I assume DICE is taking the same nerf-till-overpowered-break-till-fixed approach on this that they used on BF3/BF4?
Mr. GOH!
Spent an hour or so playing on the Sullust escape pod CTF map and enjoyed it. I quit for a bit then tried to get back into a game and I kept losing connection to the EA servers, which is what I guess I should expect from a pre-release beta. The game looks beautiful on high settings, but it's too bad it's MP-only. I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really want to play a new single-player focused Star Wars game that's good (unlike the dumb Force Unleashed games). I believe you can also hold down on the d-pad, or perhaps it's left stick click to switch camera, in case you want to swap on the fly. Stick clicking also lets you swap shoulders on your soldier. deanb
Some of us are using PC you know. http://i.imgur.com/TU56bkG.gifv Oh on a legit "issue with it" note apart from the pants team balancing there's a typo in the instructions, I can't remember exactly but it is omitting a space.
MetalCaveman
It's fun, took me a while to get used to the 1234 system, and a bunch of matches were seriously uneven, but it was still enjoyable.

deanb
On a PC they've put the "Cards" on 1234, directly above the WASD used to move. It kinda hurts tbh, and you can't move and use a card at the same time. Fine if you're wanting to use the sniper rifle, but kinda sucks if you want to throw grenades. I'll have to try a differnt key bindng out, maybe put them on back/forward keys on mouse (which I know you can default for cos not everyone has). a bunch of matches were seriously unevenConsidering one of the game modes pits a squad of rebellion soldiers against a squad of imperial soldiers backed by AT-STs and two AT-ATs and with the bonus that when they're shooting at you it's not blinding white around the entrance but a smooth darkness it's just a tad uneven. But I guess it's true to the films result of the battle. I've only had two matches where they've been destroyed, otherwise it's usually around 60% health on both at the end still. Needs a big retweaking there.
Thursday Next
I find Rebels can take them down at the second set of uplinks a lot of the time. Especially if rebels are tactical about it. Get an Orbital Strike perk. Wait till the Y-Wing Assault. Pop down to the Radar Dish Gun drop the Orbital Strike on the distant AT-AT, hop in the Radar Dish Gun, pop away at the AT-AT it'll be down to <25% guaranteed. Even less if you've got some fighters up there doing their job, or a couple of folks with smart rockets. After that it's easy to drop the distant AT-AT at the second uplink base. So everyone can focus on attacking the nearby AT-AT. Even then, two decent speeder pilots with cover from x/a-wings can win the game in the last round with tow cables. Edit: Not saying it's easy but it's totally doable. Especially if you are kitted out correctly. Also, perks like Ion torpedos (available in Survival Co-op) will make AT-ATs even easier for a coordinated, well prepared team of rebels. MetalCaveman
I meant from the perspective of a couple of matches that had less players of lower level going against more players of higher level, so, going around running with the starting pistol and grenades against dudes who could jet-pack across the map was a thing. Though it looks like it's not that hard to level up, so maybe that won't be a thing after a while. That's on the capture the pod mode, there's a reason why it tells you you should unlock other stuff before trying the AT-AT assault mode.

Mal
Gave it a go. Very pretty game but it is quite uninspired. Not to say it isn't fun with all the usual MP silliness but I have better games to play if what I played represent the core of Battlefront. Hoth is as everybody says: An unbalanced mess if you play a the Rebels. You'll lose most of the time but as Thursday said, it is winnable. The round that I won as the Rebels, it was the last minute of play with both AT-ATs at at least 50%-75% health. Their shields go down which cued our shambles (?) of a team to unload on the AT-ATs. While we do that, an A-Wing managed to tow the distant one down. Somehow after the distant AT-AT fell, our combined firepower toasted the remaining one. Everybody was shocked that we somehow won. Comments like "WAT" flooded the chat. Part luck and part on the skills of the A-Wing pilot. Thursday mentions teamwork being the key to winning Hoth as Rebels but I just don't see much of anyway to coordinate. In Battlefield games, you go with a squad and squad leaders and such can mark down targets/objective. No talking or typing needed. As of this moment, it's as if the entire Rebels side is counting on the players knowing the metagame for Hoth. The full game might make the whole complaint moot though once everybody is decked out in proper gear and know the general flow of what you should do. Still though, no way to really communicate effectively. I guess I can spawn in on my partner and cover his back... But yeah, silliness! Being Vader is pretty damn badass. Anybody who sees you early one just runs or put up a futile fight up till the team can muster a group to take me down. The only downer is that Vader doesn't do force lightning. It should be fun if I can try Luke but I'll try to avoid being stomped... Downing a jedi/sith is equally as fun. They go down quite fast if faced with a turret. Grenading them is fun too. I managed to do that to a timid Vader before I took a pot shot which ended with a flying lightsaber to my face. Other silliness... jetpacking and sticking an AT-ST. I kind of want to try it on the AT-AT...
Mister Jack
Let's be honest with ourselves here. The AT-AT game mode fucking sucks. I played for hours and not once did I ever see the rebel team win, and I joined a lot of different games to compare teams. If I was on the empire side I always won and when I was on the rebel side I always lost. I'm sure it's POSSIBLE for the rebel team to win, but the odds are stacked so heavily against them that there's almost no point in even trying, especially when, as Mal pointed out, there are no squads or even a tagging system. There's really no way to coordinate a team attack, and this mode desperately requires exactly that. I know it's the Hoth battle and all but come on. I am also strongly against the way vehicles and especially heroes are now token pickups. I don't see why vehicles can't just be the way they always were, but never mind that for now. The real problem is that heroes are powerups now. The game used to assign hero spawns to teams at random (or possibly based on performance), and while it could be a little chaotic it also meant that everyone had a chance to play as the heroes and it was a pleasant surprise when one popped up for you. Now, though, once people learn the game they're probably just going to camp around the spawn points for hero tokens, depriving other people of the chance to play them. Why was this change necessary at all? It's frustrating because there is fun to be had in this game and it comes really close to being great sometimes, but there are just too many niggling little things that hold it back from its true potential. Some of these design decisions are, to be frank, downright boneheaded. Edited October 10, 2015 by Mister Jack
deanb
I've noticed the Rebels winning more frequently of late (I even took down both AT-ATs in one match with the whole "orbital bombardment" shit and man that eats through them like butter. First was down in first round, second in the third). However that only worked through the luck of getting two orbital bombardments in one game, there's others I've not even gotten a rocket launcher. When an AT-ST is gunning down on you you really don't want to pick up the useless blaster cannon (considering all the other mounted weapons in game I'm not sure the point of the pickup blaster cannon is). Mal
Once things get settled down, I can see Rebels winning much more. Bomb the closer AT-AT one then lasso or just gun down the further AT-AT. The closer AT-AT will go down most of the time while the second one will be a wildcard if it goes down or not. Either way, I can already hear the calls for orbital bombardment to be nerfed since it can kill a 100% health AT-AT if you land the shot just right. Or not. Depending on the teams' pilots one side can dominate the skies, keeping the Uplink stations in their control. Which brings me to this bit: The ground troops have very little in ways to fight back against fighters. I had a few fighters charge me and even a full blaster barely made a dent. Rockets are rare pickups so their uses are mainly for the AT-ATs. For Imperials, I guess I can shoot with that single fucking shot. Ugh. I swear I'll land an ion grenade on one before the beta ends. I already marked a kamikaze attack on an enemy fighter off my list.
Mr. GOH!
Rebels shouldn't be able to do an orbital bombardment during the Battle of Hoth.
