TheFlyingGerbil
Anyone downloaded the TestFire Demo? Interesting to see how they'll cope with the demand. I'm guessing the fact you're only offered three 1 hour slots is to spread the load. Even if you're not free to play in one of those slots if you download the demo it gets you 10% off the game if you buy it from the eShop so may be worth grabbing anyway. Mal
I've been watching streams of this game on and off since it's release. I kind of want to get the Splatoon Wii U bundle which comes out on my birthday... This game got to be a nightmare for folks suffering from OCD. With that said, Turf War is an interesting game mode. K:D (for a lack of a better term) doesn't seem to matter at all, just how much ground your team covered. Sure if you got a good team with high splats, you could push back the other team to their spawn. The three minute round limit is also just right. I'm just unsure if the level 20 cap and the progression is enough though. The folks I'm watching are reaching the cap already. Fun game but I'm unsure if that can carry the game. Mister Jack
They can always raise the cap with future updates.
Mal
Yeah. It'll be interesting to see what sort of weapons they add on too since each level up unlocks a new weapon.
Mister Jack
Weapon unlocks are kind of weird. Unlike most shooters, you don't get to customize loadouts piece by piece. Instead, each primary weapon you buy has preassigned secondary and super weapons attached to it. While you do sometimes unlock weapons that are entirely new, more often you will unlock a primary that's mostly identical to one you already have (excluding the paint job) but with different secondary and super weapons attached to it. So I guess in that sense you can think of it as every level unlocking a new loadout.
Mister Jack
Japan is getting free Squid Girl DLC. Man I hope that makes it across the pond.
CorgiShinobi
Oh yeah, forgot to mention I got this game too! I've been wanting to finish up a few things in Destiny before tackling Splatoon. I hear there are already a few updates to the game too. Hell if I'm going to get any of the Amiibo figures.
TheFlyingGerbil
Yeah, I don't want to get any of the amiibo figures, which is a drag as they actually look like they add some decent content to the game. Shame there's not another way to unlock it.
Mister Jack
Yeah, they recently added two new maps, a new gun, and a new game mode. They also unlocked ranked matches.
Mal
I kind of want to get the Splatoon Wii U bundle that comes out on my birthday but god damn if I am to somehow support the abysmal amiibo figurines situation. I swear, getting my other figurines is easier than getting amiibos and they tend to be have a limited run too. These Splatoon amiibos shouldn't be hard to get since there is a game mode tied to them. So kind of like a worst case scenario for amiibos. I really do want to play Splatoon since from what I've seen of the game, it looks fun. Sure ranked Splat Zones matches is such a piss show* right now but Turf War is just great. The weapons and loadouts all have their pros and cons. Most of the time I wouldn't call any of them OP. The only real advantage you can get is through your armor (shoe, clothes and head) upgrades which are random. The rest comes down to if you know how to use your weapon and maneuver correctly. And of course, I would love to play as Squid Girl. Ika can finally take over the world! She even knows English! * Inkstrikes can cap the zone and if the map only have one zone in a mode call Splat Zones then have fun. The mode also painfully showcases bad habits that doesn't work at all with the game mode (e.g., camping, being too passive).
Mister Jack
The amiibos, as I understand it, unlock three timed challenge courses that unlock exclusive gear if you beat them. It's not a huge loss, but I won't deny that it's still pretty shitty to lock it behind figurines that are so hard to get ahold of. I wouldn't let the amiibos be a deterrent to playing the rest of the game, though. It's more than worth it.
TheFlyingGerbil
does anyone know if there is any matching in this game? While I was level 2 and had only played a couple of matches I was placed in with 7 other who were mostly 20 and none below 17 or 18, with 20 being the cap at the moment, we were very much at opposite ends of the scale. They all had weapons I'd yet to unlock and it was fairly obvious they were more experienced, sitting on high ground and sniping and such when noobs (me included) are just running shooting everyone one any everything. Certainly it was a moment I was glad there was no voice chat as I wouldn't like to have heard what they were saying. Also, what the heck is up with squids that die when they touch water? I really feel like that needs an explanation.
Mister Jack
I think it's because the squids evolved to be made of ink once they started living on land, so they dissolve in water or something like that.
Mal
I think I like this game too much considering I never even played it... They're confused. And ranked matches are class A, A-, B+ and so on. Not your level. http://gfycat.com/JealousUniformDegu I'm missing a few buttons like the media one...
Mister Jack
It's a serious problem.
TheFlyingGerbil
Played ranked battles for the first time today. I enjoyed it but I'm not sure how they work out the points afterwards. Nevertheless, I went from C- to C+. Obviously now it gets harder to rise up as it's 12 points for a win and -10 for a loss, whereas at at C- you got 20 points for a win. Problem is, it's easy to get stuck on a duff team and there's not much you can do about it. I guess most people are used to that but I don't play online so will have to just learn to deal with that. One thing it has got me to do is try some other weapons as I stuck to just one after I found one I liked, but I'm never going to be is a tactician, like with the update they just made to nerf some of the OP stuff, I'd noticed people appearing out of nowhere to kill me but I'd not twigged they all had the same outfit on. I just went for the ones with the obvious benefits. and that didn't look too ugly, lol. They're bringing out a new mode, tower control today/tomorrow which looked pretty frenetic when I watched the treehouse presentation, so I look forward to that. After I've had a few goes on it I'll probably end up deciding which ranked mode or turf war based on which maps they're using.
Mister Jack
So the results from the first Splatfest are in. I'm sorry but that's horseshit. We Team Cat people won more matches but still lose the event because dogs were more popular? Of COURSE dogs are more popular in the United States. Anyone could have guessed that. So now this means that people will be joining teams in future Splatfests based on what they think the popular vote will be. If you ask me, this is a bad way to judge Splatfests. Winners should be determined by, you know, winning. Edited July 5, 2015 by Mister Jack
TheFlyingGerbil
That would make more sense. It's interesting to see the question results, but it shouldn't have a bearing on the splatfest results. Having said that, there is no bonus to being on the winning side is there? I myself am now an eternal pop diva boy, which was the highest rank and ended up with 18 shells. So no good reason not to make your choice based on your genuine opinion of the question. Here's the EU results: Popularity: Rock - 64% Pop - 36% Wins: Rock - Rock - 53% Pop - 47% Overall: Rock -170 Pop - 130 I forgot Japan wouldn't be in the Splatfest, and since they usually seem to account for at least half of the people playing I think pop was doomed from the start. though I think the actual win ratio isn't too bad. It would be interesting if it showed the percentage of matches you won personally so you could see how you did compared to the side as a whole. Mister Jack
The winning team gets more shells, a max of 24 versus the losing team's 18.
TheFlyingGerbil
I just came back in here to post that, as I saw it on a Facebook group I'm in. I guess that's not too bad to be honest - 18 shells is plenty as the dude in alley only uses one at a time, I'm just glad you don't get something money-can't-buy, like a special item of clothing as that would be kind of sucky, and would actually make me question my choices next time I picked a team, though I know in my heart I would pick my genuine choice it would certainly add a level of annoyance to the proceedings. As is, 6 shells are equivalent to 180,000 points, which is a fair few matches, but I hope not enough for people to make a mess of the next event. If it becomes an issue I'm sure Nintendo will change the rules as they were quick to rebalance the abilities with the 1.30 update so it seems they're actively monitoring how people are playing/what people are complaining about in forums. CorgiShinobi
Maybe if I had remembered to play during Splatfest, Dog would have had a higher winning percentage.

TheFlyingGerbil
Anyone doing the last ever Splatfest? Think the choice between Callie and Marie is a bit harsh, but will be playing anyway.
TheFlyingGerbil
I just got to max rank for the last ever Splatfest. Reached it for the first one too, but not many/any in between so quite pleased. I think Nintendo have supported this game really well and done a great job, especially considering they've tried nothing like it before. I'm very likely to buy an nx sequel, though I'll happily continue to play this one until then.
