Splatoon

So despite my last post here, I hadn't been too excited about Splatoon 2. More of a "pick it up when I fancy a game" than a I wonder if you can pre-order it. But then the Splatoon 2 Direct happened and I'm pretty stoked for it now.

Seems like a big enough change from the first one that I want see what's up with it  and honestly, some of those new specials are wild.

Also, there's a pre-release Splatfest on the 15th. The download is available now.

Splatfest is live at 5pm BST. Obviously Team Ice Cream will ultimately take the victory because I mean, fuck cake right?

Tonight will be my first experience of Splatoon in any form. Fingers crossed I take to it because I've got £40 burning a hole in my pocket and a new console to play games on.

I'm not sure I'll be free tonight but I have downloaded it in hopes. Splatoon was right up there as one of my favourite games last gen (not sure that's even the correct term with Nintendo hardware now)

I will give you a tip which seems most relevant to seasoned gamers and it is to give the motion controls a chance, especially if you've played shooters on joypads before. A lot of people seem to have thought, "I'm good at games I don't need motion control" and that is not the correct way to think about it for this game, it's not the easy option, and it's not a lot of movement like whacking tennis balls in Wii Sport or slightly janky unnecessary alternative to stick controls like skyward sword. Think of motion controls in Splatoon more like using a mouse instead a stick. There are so many examples of people going straight into the menu and turning them off and not even trying or just having a mental block and not letting themselves like it. But there are more examples too of people powering through the initial experience of it seeming "wrong" and actually realising it is the best way to play the game for them.

Now having had that bit of a rant, whether or not you want to turn them off for the mayhem of the splatfest so you can jump in with how you're most familiar is a different decision and of course you may give it a fair shake and decide you genuinely prefer traditional controls but I would say when you have the full game (and you will want the full game) please consider giving motion controls a try.

Okay first things first. I tried to love the motion controls. I stuck with them for the first hour I spent with the game. However I just couldn't get used to them and they actually had a direct impact on my enejoyment of the game.

So I turned them off. Figuring there's no point in being better at a game I'm not enjoying.

As for Splatoon itself. At first it all felt a little random. A little too frantic. Almost like there's no depth to the game play. You run in, shoot paint and hope you don't run into one of the obviously superior players.

I only spent 2.5h with it, but towards the end I think some of that tactical depth started to come through. Maybe. I'm hoping it's in there because if it's literally just 4 dudes throwing paint around I'll get bored quickly.

I'm a little disappointed I didn't get to see more of what the game had to offer. I hear character customisation is a big part of the experience, and I like that aspect of games. Same with levelling up and loadouts.

I *think* I'll pick it up come release. Probably physical because it gives me an out if after a week I decide it's not for me.

All in all, In my 2 and a bit hours I certainly had fun.

There is more strategy in the other modes if you thought splatfest was a bit hectic. Turf war is the "for fun" mode. Though of course there are certainly tactics to be applied.

Not sure what's changed in 2, but in the first Splatoon you don't really level up your character, at least not in a way that effects your character's attributes - it just shows how long you've been playing. The main thing you do is choose a weapon to match the stage you're playing, then choose an outfit to match your weapon. Each item of clothing has a different primary attribute ready to go, and up 3 sub-attributes to unlock by playing in that item.

It all adds another level but don't expect anything too in depth.

The splatoon 2 Octo cinematic trailer is one of my favorite things in 2018 so far.  Absolutely ludicrous.  Also did you guys know that there are full on hologram concerts where the splatoon pop stars sing their vocalizer songs?  Super weird.  Harmless!  But super weird.

Will definitely purchase when I own a Switch.
