Forum Upgrade

Hiya y'all

 

Right so I'm currently running a local install of this forum on my home PC and going through the steps of upgrading to spot any snags before doing it for real. One biggy which will affect everyone is a change to how you log-in. At the moment there is a "Display Name" and a "username". In the new forum version there's just the one which in the upgrade you've to pick which is being kept, with Display Name being the main one. You can still log-in using email too.

 

But for folks, like myself, that have a Display Name different from your Username it's something to keep in mind. Maybe have a quick check of what email you have set on here and sort appropriately.

 

I might be updating tonight, just as a wee heads up. (7PM my time when this was posted). Or I might wake up early tomorrow and do it then since it'll impact less folks.

 

Oh as another aside: probably gonna have some stuff go all weird, and some stuff go altogether (it's a major forum server upgrade, we only use a few hooks/plug-ins but those I do are only the Steam log-in has a v4 update. Oh and one, the forum icons, is now built into the core so that's neat.

Other's that go for example are the sub-forum titles, which is something added in with a plug-in).

 

edit: So errm, the new version has Statuses, but they're kinda reduced in importance*, and as best I can tell there's no way to have it on the homepage like it is currently.

This I'd guess is quite the deal breaker for now.

 

*And yet on the new version have some hefty styling tools.

 

edit 2: Yeah I'm gonna hold off, while it's like officially "live" it seems they're updating a bit still (despite being in beta for months). Upcoming adds in a feature which auto-merges posts within a timeframe (i.e for doubleposts it'll merge it to the post you made 3 minutes prior)
