Mal
Seriously, that have to be some serious cardboard else it'll be destroyed in a day.
CorgiShinobi
Yeah, I feel like it's got to be the good stuff or else you're buying an easily breakable toy just from normal wear-and-tear. I applaud Nintendo for their ambition, but this isn't something for me. For kids, I think this will scratch the same itch as Lego and other similar building toys. When I was little that's what I was into, from Lego, K'nex, and Erector sets.
Mal
Looking into it some more. The blueprints are free. You can use whatever materials you like. It's just the idea of selling cardboard is sending people into a fritz. Be they Nintendo attackers or defenders.

Mister Jack
So what does the Switch have to look forward to in 2018? I'm eager to play Bayonetta 3 and Shin Megami Tensei 5, but there's no telling when those are going to come out.
Mal
Looking into to it, besides the indie titles (which shouldn't be discounted)... there's should be Fire Emblem, Kirby, Yoshi, Mario Tennis and Project Octopath Traveler (Switch only so I'm including it). Next year is probably going to be Pokemon and Metroid Prime 4. Then of course there's Mario Kart (not 8) and Smash to look forward to. I wouldn't be surprised if there be another Zelda game either by say 2020 or so that might go together with a hardware upgrade. Maybe we will get more games on the list by E3 or something. I would be really jazzed if a new Rune Factory or something like that comes out.
Mister Jack
Fire Emblem would be nice, provided they don't split it up into two games again and they rein in Treehouse's abysmal localization work. Fates was such a shitshow that I had to skip it. I'd like to have a good reason to play the next one. As for Kirby, it's been a while since I bought a Kirby game, but this new one has the power combining mechanic from Kirby 64, which is my favorite game in the series, so I'm pretty tempted to pick that one up. As much as I'd love a new Rune Factory, I wouldn't hold my breath. That developer went bankrupt, and while they were bought up by their publisher, they ended up working on a completely different project after they were rehired. Okay, then maybe Story of Season but i have to play it first before I can vouch for it.
Mister Jack
Switch firmware update 5.0 is bricking switches that use third party docks, particularly the Nyko one. No reports of the Insignia one causing problems, but if you're using a third party dock you'd better stop using it for the time being. Mal
Physical DRM! Seriously though, I wonder why they're getting bricked.
Mal
Got this from Reddit: Looks like the Switch is NOT USB-C compliant. 3rd-party docks seem to use proper USB-C hardware so it can potentially fry a Switch. If this is the reason for the bricking then it calls into question if people should continue using their phone chargers to charge a Switch in handheld mode as well, which I do... So stick with the charge cable and/or original dock to charge your Switch...
TheMightyEthan
Holy shit, that's good to know. I've been using a phone charger for handheld charging too.
Mister Jack
Ugh, I really like my Insignia dock and I haven't had any problems with it yet but if the Switch isn't USB-C compliant then it really isn't worth the risk, is it? God damn it.
Mal
This Switch issue really brings to light how much USB-C stuff out there are not compliant. It also explains why one of my phone cables did not work with the Switch. Also. I think it's really is just a dock issue. The power draw issue only shows up when the Switch is docked. There's some funkiness with the power demand with the Switch when docked. People should be safe using their phone chargers and battery banks while laying in bed or flying with the Switch. This is freaking me out a bit since I need to fly in a few weeks. If I brick it then I guess I can send it our for warrenty service since it is one year (pretty shitty) and I got it soon after Splatoon 2 launched which was during the summer. TheFlyingGerbil
Are any of these third party accessories officially authorised? Nintendo may argue using them would void your warranty as you've not followed manufacturer's instructions which will almost certainly say to only use officially licensed accessories. Mister Jack
When it comes to docks, unfortunately no. I haven't had any problems with mine but I'm too paranoid to keep using it now with all I've learned since update 5.0. I really hate being forced to use Nintendo's completely overpriced and quite frankly rather shitty dock, but the convenience factor isn't worth potentially bricking my system when another update is released. TheMightyEthan
That's why I like the dock I got, it's just a plastic case and you put the guts from the stock dock in yourself, so as far as the connections and things are concerned you're using the stock dock. deanb
Nintendo in non-standards shocker! I wonder if it's not standards complaint because they genuinely don't know how to implement it or if they wanted the cheapness of using the readily available USB components, but purposefully slapping on their own physical stuff to require properly licensed components even if it is something like USB-C (which I'd swear is likely a breach of USB IF rules anyway to basically steal their designs, at least with say iPhone cables it's compliant on the USB end). Mister Jack
@TheMightyEthan That's great if you just want to replace the dock it came with, but I wanted a second one for the bedroom which means you're still paying 90 bucks. I got mine for 70 but that's still ludicrous for a glorified USB plug.
Mr. GOH!
Does anyone ever use the Switch's kickstand? It seems both impossible to use and completely useless since you would have to be super close to the tablet to see the screen anyway.
TheMightyEthan
The only time I've ever used it is for the parts of Zelda where you have to do the motion puzzles (think those handheld puzzles where you tilt them to get the ball through the maze). Sometimes you have to tilt it too far for it to be practical in handheld mode, so I would set it up with the kickstand and hold the controllers in my hand.
Mister Jack
I honestly just use this thing It's like ten bucks, is super simple to use, will fit in pretty much any bag, and has multiple viewing angles.
Mr. GOH!
Doesn't fix the fact that the screen is too small to play on if it's further than 2 feet from your face. Which is fine, it just makes me wonder about the kickstand and the peripheral you just posted. I mean, I thought about ordering the stand but quickly realized there are no situations in which I would want to use it disconnected from the TV with the joy-cons detached. Mister Jack
I imagine that it would be inconvenient to use gyro controls in handheld mode. I know that Splatoon 2 and some sections of BotW use them, and it's probably awkward to have to tilt the whole screen along with the controllers.
Mr. GOH!
It is; it took me a while to figure out that I should disconnect the right joy-con to make the gyro puzzles much much much easier in handheld mode. That's what made me consider the stand for a hot minute before I realized I would never want to game for more than a few minutes like that.
