TheMightyEthan
Pretty sure I said that like 4 posts back... I feel ignored. 1
Mr. GOH!
I totally missed that post, @TheMightyEthan ! I toyed with playing Mario Odyssey with the kickstand out, but I couldn't see the screen clearly enough and just went back to handheld mode. Mister Jack
The Switch has been irreparably hacked. This is a hack at the hardware level, meaning Nintendo can't do jack shit about it without a total redesign of the console. I would feel bad for them, but after their last update forced me to pay for their shitty, overpriced first party dock to avoid the risk of bricking my system I can only feel smug as hell. TheMightyEthan
It's a vulnerability in the Tegra boot rom code, so it can be patched in future Switches without a total redesign, it just can't be patched on existing Switches because once they leave the factory the rom is read-only (as the name would imply) and can't be edited. I foresee a situation like the OG Xbox where certain hardware versions are coveted by modders because of the ease of modding. I also am ecstatic to have a system that's as easily modded as the OG Xbox was. I loved playing emulated games* on my Xbox, and used it as an HTPC for years and years until the switch to mkv (which was too hard for the poor little Xbox to decode in realtime). *I would never even consider using it to play pirated games. Not me, no siree. cough cough
Mal
I mean, if you want to pirate the Wii U titles that are on Switch then go for it. It's a pretty light grey for me.
TheMightyEthan
Honestly, for the ones I already own (being one of the 4 people who bought a Wii U), I wouldn't have any qualms about that.
CorgiShinobi
This is a local level hack that doesn't make people vulnerable, but makes the system a resource for potential piracy. That said, I don't expect this to be a hurtful blow to Nintendo. The whole reason I got a PSP ages ago was so I could use it as a portable emulation machine. Like Ethan said, this can be fixed for future versions, so if anyone wants a well-resourced hackable device, they would either buy one or buy a second Switch. I say a second Switch because chances are this can potentially damage the Switch, and like the article was saying, Nintendo could implement server-side methods to find "illegitimate" Switches and banned them from online. Kinda like the days of the OG Xbox. I know a few guys who would love to have the Switch as a Linux machine, but may not want to put their internal data at risk. Of course the Switch isn't that expensive and these guys got the funds if they want.
TheMightyEthan
Oh god, I forgot about PSP. That thing was more easily modded than the Xbox. Was fantastic for playing SNES games while travelling.
deanb
https://nyko.com/products/pixelquest-arcade-kit-for-nintendo-switch This seems pretty neat and well priced. Would site with your Labo quite well too.
TheMightyEthan
It must be tiny though, I can't imagine it being comfortable to use.
Mister Jack
News reports are flooding in about the Nyko Pixelquest Arcade Kit bricking Switches! When reached for comment, Nintendo responded with "That's what you get for buying Nyko."
Mister Jack
The WSJ is reporting two new Switch models. The Switch Mini will be a cheaper Switch with fewer features and the Switch Pro will be more powerful but more expensive. I'd post a link but there's a paywall. Mal
What I want out of a Switch Pro is stronger, more stable mobile performance. Most importantly... a profile and save transfer that I can rely on. What is the state of that right now?
Mister Jack
The former is probably a given. The latter is probably wishful thinking.
Mal
Hmm, I guess I'll have to buy it in stores (hopefully they have a trade in offer) and get everything done right then and there in the store.
MetalCaveman
Hopefully that means the current version will go down in price.
TheFlyingGerbil
I think we knew or at least suspected VR was coming to Switch even before the console was launched due to comments from Nintendo, so what do you all think of this take on it? It looks like fun and probably the best use of Labo so far but I won't be getting it. I would like if they would bring out a padded and strapped headset that clicked the switch in on its rails and had built in motion sensing then you could use a joycon in each hand and would be a good basic setup for maybe £50 with some software? Mister Jack
Make Pokemon Snap for the camera and I'll buy it.
TheMightyEthan
@TheFlyingGerbil The resolution on the screen isn't good enough for anything serious like what you're describing, it's just good for Labo-type gimmicky little silly games. TheFlyingGerbil
I'd invest in the holder if it came with a NintendoLand style minigame collection and future support was just limited to games "enhanced with VR experiences" like they're adding to Mario Odyssey (and as an example for a future game, Animal Crossing just play like normal, but maybe going to the museum or decorating your house or some even celebrations like the fireworks on New Year's Eve could be in VR etc.) As far as I can work out the whole of breath of the wild will be playable in VR (though it's not super clear) and that would be torturous , holding the entire console and controls up to your face for more than 5 minute bursts and as you say couldn't look great and I'm super surprised the console can cope with rendering it, even at what would end up being SD resolution. CorgiShinobi
I got myself the VR Starter Kit, so just the VR Goggles and Blaster. The goggles don't take long to assemble, though it was also my first experience with the Labo software so it personally took me a little longer. The software's instructional portion is top notch. Really has that Nintendo shine to it. The Blaster took me 4 hours (including breaks). Made for a neat activity Saturday afternoon. It's hard to tell from the promotional images, but there's a lot of cardboard that goes into the thing. It's sturdy though and for good reason as there's a "clacker" mechanism inside. When you push the trigger, it snaps forward and activates... something to the right Joy-Con's IR. It makes use of some reflective sticker material inside, so uber high tech here. I could see a Pokemon Snap working as Pokemon has rarely ever been highly detailed when it comes to visuals. (Pokken Tournament being the outlier.) The games I've played so far have been visually entertaining and could see another on-rails adventure. I don't have the Camera though and don't know if that would translate well. Might just be a VR goggles only type of game instead. Edited April 14, 2019 by Atomsk88 Goggles, not Googles!
Mal
Switch Lite in September 20th. Not for me or probably anyone here but it's a good alternative for say kids or whoever just want a taste. Now where is the Switch Pro? Mister Jack
I wouldn't hold my breath for a Switch Pro. Not like we ever got Wii Pro or Wii U Pro. I guess we did get the New 3DS but they barely used it for anything.
CorgiShinobi
I'm okay with not having another model tempting me to upgrade. Nintendo has done handhelds both ways before, but I imagine they'll consider the Switch Lite the "handheld" console and the original Switch as fulfilling the home console market with the benefit of portability. I mean, truth be told I hardly ever use the Joy-Cons by themselves, but that's mostly because I've never had games that benefit from the control method. Well, outside of some Super Mario Odyssey cheese... Might be a great Christmas gift for my niece. I had my first Game Boy around her age and she has gotten into Pokemon thanks to the anime and the Detective Pikachu movie. However, the Switch Lite strongly favors being a personal device. It can't connect to a TV and by default has no kickstand. So to have a multiplayer experience, you're buying additional controllers to play on a 5.5" screen propped up with a third party stand. So the more "family entertainment" friendly of the two is the original Switch. Edited July 10, 2019 by Atomsk88
MetalCaveman
Supposedly they are updating the Switch hardware soon(ish?), but nothing confirmed that I know.
